Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume of Tudor Roses presents new and reimagined garments based on the original Tudor Roses published in 1998. Alice Starmore looks to historical female figures of the Tudor Dynasty as inspiration for her stunning knitwear, and her modernization of traditional Fair Isle and Aran patterns has created a sensation in the knitting world. Through garment design, Starmore and her daughter Jade tell the stories of fourteen women connected with the Tudor dynasty. They weave a narrative around the known facts of their subjects' lives using photography, art, and the only medium through which the Tudor women could leave a lasting physical record in their world — needlework. Tudor Roses includes fourteen patterns for sweaters and other wearables that follow the chronological order of the Tudor dynasty. A different model portrays each of the Tudor women, from Elizabeth Woodville, grandmother of Henry VIII, through Mary, Queen of Scots. The stunning design and photography appeals to knitters seeking designs that offer an attractive balance of historic and modern elements.

Book excerpt: An exquisite look into the legacy of the rose at the House of Dior, from Christian Dior’s early passion for gardening to contemporary floral-inspired designs. Christian Dior discovered gardening at his childhood home in Granville, France. Roses profoundly influenced the designer, especially with his famous New Look aesthetic, where they were placed beneath the iconic corolla symbol. Published on the occasion of the exhibition at the Musée Christian Dior in Granville, this volume explores the rose’s importance in Dior’s history. The inspiration for Christian Dior’s flowery vision of femininity runs deep throughout the House’s collections; reinventions by subsequent artistic directors pay homage to Dior’s wish to design dresses for “flower-like women.” A focus on a new variety of rose, the Rose de Granville, underscores the perennial significance of the rose today—from inspiring Haute Couture creations to perfume making. This fascinating immersion in Dior’s universe continues with texts by experts Éric Pujalet-Plàa, Vincent Leret, and Brigitte Richart, accompanied by sublime photographs, including shots by the most acclaimed twentieth-century masters as well as contemporary photography.

'MacLean skilfully weaves together the disparate threads of her plot to create a gripping tale of crime and sedition in an unsettled city' Sunday Times 'MacLean's light touch portrait of a hard man with a softer core is what makes these books so memorable' The Times London, 1655, and Cromwell's regime is under threat from all sides. Damian Seeker, Captain of Cromwell's Guard, is all too aware of the danger facing Cromwell. Parliament resents his control of the Army while the Army resents his absolute power. In the east end of London, a group of religious fanatics plots rebellion. In the midst of all this, a stonemason uncovers a perfectly preserved body dressed in the robes of a Dominican friar, bricked up in a wall in the crumbling Black Friars. Ill-informed rumours and speculation abound, but Seeker instantly recognises the dead man. What he must discover is why he met such a hideous end, and what his connection was to the children who have started to disappear from around the city. Book Randy Beer and Rock n Roses

Download or read book Randy Beer and Rock n Roses written by Alfred Groff and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2024-01-17 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This story touches all perspectives of a human being: socio-political, inner-psychological, transpersonal-spiritual. Randy's social worker finds him an apartment in a community, where topics such as democracy, regional money, the economy for the common good, permaculture,100% money and unconditional basic income are the order of the day. He works on an organic farm, jogs with a civil servant, gets a massage from a tantric woman, falls in love, escapes into the solitude of the forest, survives a death struggle and meets willing women in a cupboard. Finally, Randy travels and visits the communities in the Ecovillages Findhorn, Tamera, Sekem and Auroville. And then the telephone rings! Excerpt from one of the first feedbacks: "I came across this book by chance. The title caught my interest. But I feared a very complicated work; I like things to be simple, clear, and intuitively comprehensible. But my first glance at the book reassured me. It seemed to be written in a generally understandable way. This was confirmed as the book progressed. Technical terms were explained, and I could understand most of the theories on first reading. I found Kushala's first question to Randy rather unworldly if you know the 'normal world'. And yet Kushala is just like that. She belongs to an educated elite who don't really know how people out there think and speak. But that's exactly why they want the 'normal' Randy in the community. I really liked him right from the start. For a 'normal guy', as I have met many out there, he is surprisingly open-minded and open-hearted. He doesn't understand everything, but he gets involved. So much so that he quickly experiences the positive aspects of meditation and the other spiritual and physical benefits. I think that's great; he doesn't seem to have any deep resistance to these experiences, he really just seems to be inexperienced in this area. So, he is clearly a person who wants to develop in this positive direction, and then does so. The book captivated me. I started reading it in one evening, and one evening later I had already read the whole thing. Thank you for the great book and the great story. The message is great. The writing style is understandable. The story is exciting. This is a book I will recommend and give as a gift. This is also a good book as a basis for discussions and conversations in writing and reading groups."

Book The Art of Gardening with Roses

Download or read book The Art of Gardening with Roses written by Graham Stuart Thomas and published by Macmillan + ORM. This book was released on 2014-10-07 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Graham Stuart Thomas stands alone as the world's pre-eminent rose gardener. In this unique presentation he focuses on the uses of a variety of garden plants--flowering and nonflowering--with which to create enduring garden designs that rescue roses from the stiff formality of most ornamental gardens. Here, Mr. Thomas employs the lessons of the magnificent garden at Mottisfont Abbey, first created by him in 1972 and extended in the 1980s, to demonstrate thrilling design choices and methods of lengthening the flowering seasons open to any alert gardener. As Henry Mitchell, the Washington Post's distinguished horticulturist, puts it: "It was Thomas who launched the revival of interest in roses long out of commerce...He found many of the unheard-of nineteenth-century roses at Bobbink and Atkins Nursery in New Jersey and the old Lester and Tillotson Nursery in California. The authority of Graham Stuart Thomas is by no means limited to roses. He writes authoritatively on perennials, garden design, the grouping of plants, on groundcovers and much else...Few gardeners are so catholic or such connoisseurs." The present book is a glorious display--in words and color illustrations--of Mr. Thomas's gardens, providing an education for the reader in the design of his own garden. Photographs show roses close up and in garden settings with complementary plants that extend the flowering season of the gardens into the late fall. The author explores the origins of the roses selected and explains how he has employed their particular qualities in his designs. He includes a checklist to assist gardeners who wish to re-create these sumptuous plant combinations.
