Book A Participatory Approach to Modern Geometry

Download or read book A Participatory Approach to Modern Geometry written by Jay Kappraff and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 2014-08-25 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to make the subject of geometry and its applications easy and comfortable to understand by students majoring in mathematics or the liberal arts, architecture and design. It can be used to teach students at different levels of computational ability and there is also sufficient novel material to interest students at a higher cognitive level. While the book goes deeply into the applications of geometry, it contains much introductory material which up to now may not have been known to the student. The constructive approach using compass and straightedge engages students, not just on an intellectual level, but also at a tactile level. This may be the only rigorous book offering geometry that attempts to engage students outside of the mathematics discipline.

Download or read book Euclidean Geometry written by David M. Clark and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2012-06-26 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geometry has been an essential element in the study of mathematics since antiquity. Traditionally, we have also learned formal reasoning by studying Euclidean geometry. In this book, David Clark develops a modern axiomatic approach to this ancient subject, both in content and presentation. Mathematically, Clark has chosen a new set of axioms that draw on a modern understanding of set theory and logic, the real number continuum and measure theory, none of which were available in Euclid's time. The result is a development of the standard content of Euclidean geometry with the mathematical precision of Hilbert's foundations of geometry. In particular, the book covers all the topics listed in the Common Core State Standards for high school synthetic geometry. The presentation uses a guided inquiry, active learning pedagogy. Students benefit from the axiomatic development because they themselves solve the problems and prove the theorems with the instructor serving as a guide and mentor. Students are thereby empowered with the knowledge that they can solve problems on their own without reference to authority. This book, written for an undergraduate axiomatic geometry course, is particularly well suited for future secondary school teachers. In the interest of fostering a greater awareness and appreciation of mathematics and its connections to other disciplines and everyday life, MSRI and the AMS are publishing books in the Mathematical Circles Library series as a service to young people, their parents and teachers, and the mathematics profession.

Book The Geometry of Environment

Download or read book The Geometry of Environment written by Lionel March and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-10-31 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1971 The Geometry of Environment is a fusion of art and mathematics introducing stimulating ideas from modern geometry, using illustrations from architecture and design. The revolution in the teaching of mathematics and the advent of the computer in design challenge traditional ways of appreciating the space about us, and expand the ‘structural’ understanding of our surroundings through such concepts as transformations, symmetry groups, sets and graphs. This book aims to show the relevance of ‘new maths’ and encourages exploration of the widening intellectual horizons of environmental design and architecture.

Book Modern Development and Challenges in Virtual Reality

Download or read book Modern Development and Challenges in Virtual Reality written by Mamata Rath and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2023-10-18 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Virtual reality (VR) is one of the technologies with the highest expectations for future growth. By creating realistic images and objects, a VR environment gives the user the impression that they are completely engrossed in their surroundings. VR applications that go beyond leisure, tourism, and marketing are now in high demand and thus the technology must be user-friendly and economical. The major technology firms are already striving to create headsets that do not require cables and that allow for high-definition viewing. Artificial intelligence is being used to control VR headsets that have far more powerful CPUs. The new standard will also offer some intriguing capabilities, like the ability to connect huge user communities and additional gadgets. Customers will be able to get photos in real-time in corporate settings, almost as if they were seeing them with their own eyes. This book presents a comprehensive overview of VR applications in medicine, electric vehicles, aviation, architecture, and more.

Book Governing Modern Societies

It demonstrates that we need to change the way we think about democracy and our notion of democracy has to be re-conceptualised.

Book Globalized Poverty and Environment

Download or read book Globalized Poverty and Environment written by Nathaniel O. Agola and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2014-07-08 with total page 381 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews the key conceptions and economic theories of poverty, explains poverty-environment nexus, and finally offers innovative socio-economic and scientific geospatial solutions for the 21st Century. The book makes it possible for our readers to understand poverty thorough a concise review of the major theoretical economic frameworks, measures of poverty, and points out the need to understand rural-urban dichotomy of poverty. We find the theories and measures to be less-than perfect and therefore point out the need to treat these measures and theories as convenient tools lacking perfect accuracy and utmost scientific reliability. It follows then that the supposedly knowledgeably crafted poverty reduction and environmental preservation solutions are inherently imperfect. The economic solutions proposed in this book transcend extant humdrum macroeconomic and policy measures targeting poverty and environmental issues. We point to a new paradigm in which private sector and other stakeholders can create new and inclusive markets where value is co-created and shared. Above all, this book offers timely state-of-the-art geospatial solutions targeting the most pressing global problems of water, e.g., the use of the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) missions to estimate changes in stored water in the water-poverty-environment nexus, pollution, agriculture and disaster management, where geospatial techniques are applied under strong environmental impact assessment regulatory regimes. This book provides a good summary of economic theories of poverty as well as a vivid depiction of the state of environmental degradation in the world. People often work separately on different issues that are, in fact, closely intertwined. The principle of holism is that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, and I believe that this joint-venture of two experts on poverty and environment has produced something more than a sum of two separate monographs on the issues. Various points raised in this volume are worth heeding when we think of formulation and implementation of a truly effective post-MDGs development agenda.
