Book A Panchromatic Study of Galactic Intermediate mass Star forming Regions

Download or read book A Panchromatic Study of Galactic Intermediate mass Star forming Regions written by Michael J. Lundquist and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current research into Galactic star formation has focused primarily on either massive star-forming regions or nearby low-mass regions. We present results from a multi-wavelength survey of Galactic intermediate-mass star-forming regions (IM SFRs). These regions were selected from mid-infrared colors that specify cool dust and large PAH contribution, suggesting that they produce stars up to, but not exceeding, 8 solar masses. Using mid-infrared WISE data we have classified 984 candidate IM SFRs as star-like objects, galaxies, filamentary structures, or blobs/shells. Of the 984 candidates, 616 are probable star-forming regions (62.6%), 128 are filamentary structures (13.0%), 39 are point-like objects of unknown nature (4.0%), and 201 are galaxies (20.4%). Focusing on blobs/shells, the sites of active star-forming regions, we study the stellar and molecular content. First, we perform a pilot study of four of these regions, IRAS 00259+5625, IRAS 00420+5530, IRAS 01080+5717, and IRAS 05380+2020, at Galactic latitudes I b I > 5° using optical spectroscopy from the Wyoming Infrared Observatory along with near-infrared photometry from the Two-Micron All Sky Survey to investigate their stellar content, confirming the intermediate-mass nature of these candidate IM SFRs. Next, we continue the survey with seven additional regions, IRAS 23448+6010, IRAS 22451+6154, IRAS 06464-1650, IRAS 01573+6730, IRAS 01467+5339, IRAS 04275+3519, and IRAS 06293-0931. Then, we conduct a sub-millimeter survey of a sample of 128 IM SFRs, using the Onsala 20-m telescope to observe 13 CO (1-0) toward 67 northern IM SFRs, the 12-m Atacama Pathfinder EXperiment telescope to observe 13CO (2-1) toward 22 southern IM SFRs, and incorporate an additional 39 sources from the Boston University Five College Radio Astronomy Observatory (BU-FCRAO) Galactic Ring Survey which observed 13 CO (1-0). We find that IM SFRs have mean a molecular column density of 7.89x10−12 cm−2 , a factor of 3.1 lower than that for a sample of high-mass regions, and have a mean 13 CO linewidth of 1.84 km/s, a factor of 1.5 lower than that for high-mass regions. Finally, we demonstrate a correlation between 13 CO linewidth and infrared luminosity as well as between molecular column density and infrared luminosity for the 13 CO sample of intermediate-mass and high-mass regions.

Book A Panchromatic View of Galaxies

Download or read book A Panchromatic View of Galaxies written by Alessandro Boselli and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-01-13 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Describing how to investigate all kinds of galaxies through a multifrequency analysis, this text is divided into three different sections. The first describes the data currently available at different frequencies, from X-rays to UV, optical, infrared and radio millimetric and centimetric, while explaining their physical meaning. In the second section, the author explains how these data can be used to determine physical parameters and quantities, such as mass and temperature. The final section is devoted to describing how the derived quantities can be used in a multifrequency analysis to study such physical processes as the star formation cycle and constrain models of galaxy evolution. As a result, observers will be able to interpret galaxies and their structure.

Book New Worlds New Horizons in Astronomy and Astrophysics

Download or read book New Worlds New Horizons in Astronomy and Astrophysics written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2011-02-04 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Driven by discoveries, and enabled by leaps in technology and imagination, our understanding of the universe has changed dramatically during the course of the last few decades. The fields of astronomy and astrophysics are making new connections to physics, chemistry, biology, and computer science. Based on a broad and comprehensive survey of scientific opportunities, infrastructure, and organization in a national and international context, New Worlds, New Horizons in Astronomy and Astrophysics outlines a plan for ground- and space- based astronomy and astrophysics for the decade of the 2010's. Realizing these scientific opportunities is contingent upon maintaining and strengthening the foundations of the research enterprise including technological development, theory, computation and data handling, laboratory experiments, and human resources. New Worlds, New Horizons in Astronomy and Astrophysics proposes enhancing innovative but moderate-cost programs in space and on the ground that will enable the community to respond rapidly and flexibly to new scientific discoveries. The book recommends beginning construction on survey telescopes in space and on the ground to investigate the nature of dark energy, as well as the next generation of large ground-based giant optical telescopes and a new class of space-based gravitational observatory to observe the merging of distant black holes and precisely test theories of gravity. New Worlds, New Horizons in Astronomy and Astrophysics recommends a balanced and executable program that will support research surrounding the most profound questions about the cosmos. The discoveries ahead will facilitate the search for habitable planets, shed light on dark energy and dark matter, and aid our understanding of the history of the universe and how the earliest stars and galaxies formed. The book is a useful resource for agencies supporting the field of astronomy and astrophysics, the Congressional committees with jurisdiction over those agencies, the scientific community, and the public.

Book The Most Interesting Galaxies in the Universe

Download or read book The Most Interesting Galaxies in the Universe written by Joel L Schiff and published by Morgan & Claypool Publishers. This book was released on 2018-09-13 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Prior to the 1920s it was generally thought, with a few exceptions, that our galaxy, the Milky Way, was the entire Universe. Based on the work of Henrietta Leavitt with Cepheid variables, astronomer Edwin Hubble was able to determine that the Andromeda Galaxy and others had to lie outside our own. Moreover, based on the work of Vesto Slipher, involving the redshifts of these galaxies, Hubble was able to determine that the Universe was not static, as had been previously thought, but expanding. The number of galaxies has also been expanding, with estimates varying from 100 billion to 2 trillion. While every galaxy in the Universe is interesting just by its very fact of being, the author has selected 51 of those that possess some unusual qualities that make them of some particular interest. These galaxies have complex evolutionary histories, with some having supermassive black holes at their core, others are powerful radio sources, a very few are relatively nearby and even visible to the naked eye, whereas the light from one recent discovery has been travelling for the past 13.4 billion years to show us its infancy, and from a time when the Universe was in its infancy. And in spite of the vastness of the Universe, some galaxies are colliding with others, embraced in a graceful gravitational dance. Indeed, as the Andromeda Galaxy is heading towards us, a similar fate awaits our Milky Way. When looking at a modern image of a galaxy, one is in awe at the shear wondrous nature of such a magnificent creation, with its boundless secrets that it is keeping from us, its endless possibilities for harboring alien civilizations, and we remain left with the ultimate knowledge that we are connected to its glory.

Book Fundamentals of Galaxy Dynamics Formation and Evolution

Download or read book Fundamentals of Galaxy Dynamics Formation and Evolution written by Ignacio Ferreras and published by UCL Press. This book was released on 2019-04-02 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Galaxies, along with their underlying dark matter halos, constitute the building blocks of structure in the Universe. Of all fundamental forces, gravity is the dominant one that drives the evolution of structures from small density seeds at early times to the galaxies we see today. The interactions among myriads of stars, or dark matter particles, in a gravitating structure produce a system with fascinating connotations to thermodynamics, with some analogies and some fundamental differences. Ignacio Ferreras presents a concise introduction to extragalactic astrophysics, with emphasis on stellar dynamics, and the growth of density fluctuations in an expanding Universe. Additional chapters are devoted to smaller systems (stellar clusters) and larger ones (galaxy clusters). Fundamentals of Galaxy Dynamics, Formation and Evolution is written for advanced undergraduates and beginning postgraduate students, providing a useful tool to get up to speed in a starting research career. Some of the derivations for the most important results are presented in detail to enable students appreciate the beauty of maths as a tool to understand the workings of galaxies. Each chapter includes a set of problems to help the student advance with the material.
