This heart-warming gift book, filled with stories of real people finding hope, courage, and faith amidst life's circumstances, radiates the spirit of the season and reminds each of us what Christmas truly means. • Author : Victoria Bernal
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press

Download or read book Nation as Network written by Victoria Bernal and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2014-08-19 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How is the internet transforming the relationships between citizens and states? What happens to politics when international migration is coupled with digital media, making it easy for people to be politically active in a nation from outside its borders? In Nation as Network, Victoria Bernal creatively combines media studies, ethnography, and African studies to explore this new political paradigm through a striking analysis of how Eritreans in diaspora have used the internet to shape the course of Eritrean history. Bernal argues that Benedict Anderson’s famous concept of nations as “imagined communities” must now be rethought because diasporas and information technologies have transformed the ways nations are sustained and challenged. She traces the development of Eritrean diaspora websites over two turbulent decades that saw the Eritrean state grow ever more tyrannical. Through Eritreans’ own words in posts and debates, she reveals how new subjectivities are formed and political action is galvanized online. She suggests that “infopolitics”—struggles over the management of information—make politics in the 21st century distinct, and she analyzes the innovative ways Eritreans deploy the internet to support and subvert state power. Nation as Network is a unique and compelling work that advances our understanding of the political significance of digital media.

Book Colonial Systems of Control

Download or read book Colonial Systems of Control written by Viviane Saleh-Hanna and published by University of Ottawa Press. This book was released on 2008-04-18 with total page 535 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A pioneering book on prisons in West Africa, Colonial Systems of Control: Criminal Justice in Nigeria is the first comprehensive presentation of life inside a West African prison. Chapters by prisoners inside Kirikiri maximum security prison in Lagos, Nigeria are published alongside chapters by scholars and activists. While prisoners document the daily realities and struggles of life inside a Nigerian prison, scholar and human rights activist Viviane Saleh-Hanna provides historical, political, and academic contexts and analyses of the penal system in Nigeria. The European penal models and institutions imported to Nigeria during colonialism are exposed as intrinsically incoherent with the community-based conflict-resolution principles of most African social structures and justice models. This book presents the realities of imprisonment in Nigeria while contextualizing the colonial legacies that have resulted in the inhumane brutalities that are endured on a daily basis.

Download or read book I Didn t Do It for You written by Michela Wrong and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2009-10-13 with total page 579 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scarred by decades of conflict and occupation, the craggy African nation of Eritrea has weathered the world's longest-running guerrilla war. The dogged determination that secured victory against Ethiopia, its giant neighbor, is woven into the national psyche, the product of cynical foreign interventions. Fascist Italy wanted Eritrea as the springboard for a new, racially pure Roman empire; Britain sold off its industry for scrap; the United States needed a base for its state-of-the-art spy station; and the Soviet Union used it as a pawn in a proxy war. In I Didn't Do It for You, Michela Wrong reveals the breathtaking abuses this tiny nation has suffered and, with a sharp eye for detail and a taste for the incongruous, tells the story of colonialism itself and how international power politics can play havoc with a country's destiny.

Book Fighting for David

Download or read book Fighting for David written by Leone Nunley and published by Winepress Pub. This book was released on 2012-12-20 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Persistent vegetative state--that was the term doctors used to describe the condition of Leone Nunley's handsome young son David following a horrific motorcycle crash. When doctors were prepared to give up hope for his recovery, Leone determined to fight for David's future. In this powerfully inspiring story, Leone shares her many trials--legal, financial, emotional, and spiritual--and amazing ways that faith helped her, and David, overcome. She also offers a unique perspective on many of the questions raised by highly publicized cases such as that of Terri Schiavo: How much potential has God given the human brain to adapt in the wake of trauma? How much time, effort, and money is enough to invest in attempts at rehabilitation--and how much is too much? If you've ever wondered whether faith can be more powerful than a doctor's diagnosis, look inside. You'll find remarkable lessons on choosing hope over despair, opting for hard work over giving up, and erring on the side of love.

  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 216 pages

Download or read book Africa written by Betty LaDuke and published by Africa Research and Publications. This book was released on 1997 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Africa, women's passion to create is evident during times of peace as well as war, under favorable circumstances as well as the most difficult and dangerous imaginable. Their media of expression can be naturally derived or imported. It can vary from monumental stone sculpture to intricate beadwork, or from painting with mud to oil and acrylic. The passion to decorate is evident in daily life from the designs applied to the smallest clay bowls, to the sturdy mud walls of their compounds where women give birth or see life pass away. These decorations are frequently symbolic and the motifs can please as well as reinforce shared community values. Across the African continent, from Timbuktu, Mali to Harare, Zimbabwe or Asmara, Eritrea, whether women weave, sew, sketch, paint, create fabric applique or stone sculptures, their art work often incorporates the duality of myth and reality as they express their hopes, fears, humor, and frustrations.
