Book Meeting the Dietary Needs of Older Adults

Download or read book Meeting the Dietary Needs of Older Adults written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2016-08-13 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Older adults are a growing demographic group in the United States, and a range of physical, social, financial, and cultural factors affect their nutritional status. Metabolic and physiologic changes that accompany normal aging modify the nutritional requirements of older adults. An examination of evidence is needed to better understand how nutritional status is associated with aging and risk of mortality or chronic disease among older adults. Underpinning many, if not most, nutritional problems in older adults is socioeconomic status. Therefore, understanding access challenges to healthy food, including geographic, financial, and transportation barriers, also is needed to better understand how to meet the nutritional needs of older adults. On October 28-29, 2015, the Food and Nutrition Board convened a workshop, Meeting the Dietary Needs of Older Adults, in Washington, DC. Participants examined factors in the physical, social, and cultural environment that affect the ability of older adults to meet their daily dietary needs. This report summarizes the presentations and discussions from the workshop.

Book Evaluating Food Assistance Programs in an Era of Welfare Reform

Download or read book Evaluating Food Assistance Programs in an Era of Welfare Reform written by National Research Council and Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1999-06-10 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report was prepared in response to a request from the Economic Research Service (ERS) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). It summarizes the discussions at a February 1998 workshop convened by the Committee on National Statistics; the Board on Children, Youth, and Families; and the Food and Nutrition Board. The fiscal year 1998 (FY1998) appropriations bill for USDA gave ERS responsibility for all research and evaluation studies on USDA food assistance programs. The bill provided $18 million to fund these studies, an increase from $7 million in FY1997. ERS asked the Committee on National Statistics for assistance in identifying new areas of research and data collection and in further improving the evaluation studies of food assistance programs. By bringing together many who work on evaluation of food assistance programs, policy analysis, survey methods, nutrition, child nutrition and child development, outcome measurement, and state welfare programs, the issues presented and discussed at the workshop provided ERS with information that could be used to develop a framework for their research program.

Book A Nutrition Program for the Elderly

Download or read book A Nutrition Program for the Elderly written by National Council on the Aging and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: A model community action program which would provide inexpensive, nutritious meals to low income elderly community members is presented. The program also would make surplus foods, food stamps, and consumer education more readily available to older citizens, and provide employment opportunities. The project addresses those socioeconomic, emotional, educational, and medical factors that result in poor nutrition in the elderly. The goals, rationale, and sponsorship of nutrition programs for the elderly are discussed. Such aspects as staff, site, equipment, financing, and budget are examined. A timetable for establishing a nutrition program is proposed. Ideas also are suggested for expanding program activities to include non-food areas of consumer protection and money-saving services. Appendices list typical menus and equipment for meals served in senior centers, and references for information on food, nutrition, and meal preparation. (nm).

Book Nutrition and Healthy Aging in the Community

Download or read book Nutrition and Healthy Aging in the Community written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2012-06-15 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. population of older adults is predicted to grow rapidly as "baby boomers" (those born between 1946 and 1964) begin to reach 65 years of age. Simultaneously, advancements in medical care and improved awareness of healthy lifestyles have led to longer life expectancies. The Census Bureau projects that the population of Americans 65 years of age and older will rise from approximately 40 million in 2010 to 55 million in 2020, a 36 percent increase. Furthermore, older adults are choosing to live independently in the community setting rather than residing in an institutional environment. Furthermore, the types of services needed by this population are shifting due to changes in their health issues. Older adults have historically been viewed as underweight and frail; however, over the past decade there has been an increase in the number of obese older persons. Obesity in older adults is not only associated with medical comorbidities such as diabetes; it is also a major risk factor for functional decline and homebound status. The baby boomers have a greater prevalence of obesity than any of their historic counterparts, and projections forecast an aging population with even greater chronic disease burden and disability. In light of the increasing numbers of older adults choosing to live independently rather than in nursing homes, and the important role nutrition can play in healthy aging, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) convened a public workshop to illuminate issues related to community-based delivery of nutrition services for older adults and to identify nutrition interventions and model programs. Nutrition and Healthy Aging in the Community summarizes the presentations and discussions prepared from the workshop transcript and slides. This report examines nutrition-related issues of concern experienced by older adults in the community including nutrition screening, food insecurity, sarcopenic obesity, dietary patterns for older adults, and economic issues. This report explores transitional care as individuals move from acute, subacute, or chronic care settings to the community, and provides models of transitional care in the community. This report also provides examples of successful intervention models in the community setting, and covers the discussion of research gaps in knowledge about nutrition interventions and services for older adults in the community.
