Book Numerical Investigation of Laminar Flow and Heat Transfer in Circular Duct with Twisted Tape Inserted for Non Newtonian Fluid

Download or read book Numerical Investigation of Laminar Flow and Heat Transfer in Circular Duct with Twisted Tape Inserted for Non Newtonian Fluid written by An Fu and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 99 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computational modeling of fully developed laminar convection of shear thinning fluids in a straight circular pipe with a twisted tape insert is presented in this thesis. The non-Newtonian behavior is modeled by purely viscous power-law and modified power-law relationships. The twisted tape geometry is defined by twist ratio y and the non-Newtonian fluid is characterized by the power-law index n . Because of symmetry between both sides of the tape insert, only one half of the domain consisting of helically twisted semi-circular cross-sectional geometry is modeled. The governing equations of mass and momentum conservation are transformed in terms of stream function and vorticity. The vorticity transport and stream function equations are solved simultaneously with the axial velocity equation and the energy conservation equation using a finite volume method. Both uniform wall temperature (UWT) and uniform heat flux (UHF) boundary conditions are considered. The governing equation are solved with varying Reynolds number (100

Book Numerical Investigation of the Graetz Problem for Newtonian and Non Newtonian Flows in Circular segment Ducts

Download or read book Numerical Investigation of the Graetz Problem for Newtonian and Non Newtonian Flows in Circular segment Ducts written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A numerical investigation was carried out to solve the full three-dimensional governing Navier-Stokes equations for steady laminar flow with heat transfer. The flow regime was considered to be hydrodynamically fully developed but thermally developing (also referred to as the classical Graetz problem). Both Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids (described by a power law model) were analyzed. A circular-segmented duct cross section was chosen for the computational work. An algebraically generated computational grid was used that was orthogonal and uniform. All the dependent variables were stored in a non-staggered manner. The numerical work was based on the finite difference techniques using second order accurate discretization. Two commonly used thermal boundary conditions; constant wall temperature (T boundary condition) and constant wall heat flux (H1 boundary condition) were examined. For each of the above boundary conditions, analyses were carried out considering the flat wall to be adiabatic. For the case concerning Newtonian fluids, numerical solutions were obtained for different segment angles () for each boundary condition. The non-Newtonian fluids were analyzed by varying the flow behavior index (n) from zero to one to cover the spectrum of shear-thinning fluids. Heating of non-Newtonian fluids is of particular importance to food processing systems. However, excessive pumping demand precludes development of turbulence in tubular arrangements. So laminar flow prevails in heat transfer equipment handling non-Newtonian materials. A finite difference model was developed to simulate various scenarios of flow behavior index and segment angles. It is shown that the Nusselt number distribution along the walls is affected appreciably by the variation of the power law index as also by the segment angle of the duct. Results are presented and discussed for a range of power law indices and segment angles for the various boundary conditions. It was observed that increase in flow behavior index produces a lower convective heat transfer co-efficient. The concomitant friction factor also reduces as is shown.

Book Heat Transfer to Non Newtonian Fluids

Download or read book Heat Transfer to Non Newtonian Fluids written by Aroon Shenoy and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2018-03-12 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has been written with the idea of providing the fundamentals for those who are interested in the field of heat transfer to non-Newtonian fluids. It is well recognized that non-Newtonian fluids are encountered in a number of transport processes and estimation of the heat transfer characteristics in the presence of these fluids requires analysis of equations that are far more complex than those encountered for Newtonian fluids. A deliberate effort has been made to demonstrate the methods of simplification of the complex equations and to put forth analytical expressions for the various heat transfer situations in as vivid a manner as possible. The book covers a broad range of topics from forced, natural and mixed convection without and with porous media. Laminar as well as turbulent flow heat transfer to non-Newtonian fluids have been treated and the criterion for transition from laminar to turbulent flow for natural convection has been established. The heat transfer characteristics of non-Newtonian fluids from inelastic power-law fluids to viscoelastic second-order fluids and mildly elastic drag reducing fluids are covered. This book can serve the needs of undergraduates, graduates and industry personnel from the fields of chemical engineering, material science and engineering, mechanical engineering and polymer engineering.

Book Advanced Hydrodynamics Problems in Earth Sciences

Download or read book Advanced Hydrodynamics Problems in Earth Sciences written by Tatiana Chaplina and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-02-11 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explains the dynamics of natural systems – the geosphere, hydrosphere and atmosphere – and their interactions, along with the human contribution to naturally occurring processes, which is one of the most urgent and practically important scientific problems of our age. The widespread use of sophisticated, tremendously powerful supercomputers now allows us to model complex phenomena that were previously inaccessible for analysis. Further, the introduction and advancement of a new generation of geophysical instruments – remote observing systems installed on ships, aircraft and satellites – make it possible to gather huge amounts of objective, representative data. The articles presented here offer valuable insights into the laboratory modelling of geo-environments and testing of newly developed physical and mathematical models.
