Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: "We investigate the two-dimensional flow in a porous medium, where water is replaced by injected water of a higher temperature. We analyse the influence of the thermal expansivity of water, [eta], on the flow and on the temperature. For [eta] = 0 (no expansion) we find an analytic solution, which shows that in this case the flow is a one-dimensional phenomenon. For [eta] [not equal to] 0 we compute a solution by numerical means. For the discretisaton we use the Mixed Finite Element method. The solution method is multigrid. The solution so obtained has two-dimensional features. For some physically relevant choices of parameters there is a small diffusion of heat, which causes a sharp heat front. Numerical techniques are investigated to capture these steep temperature solutions."

Book excerpt: Rainfall infiltration is an important component of the hydrologic cycle and plays a crucial role in the formation of surface runoff, providing subsurface water that governs the water supply for agriculture, the transport of pollutants through the vadose zone, and the recharge of aquifers. The spatiotemporal evolution of the infiltration rate under natural conditions cannot currently be deduced by direct measurements at any scale of interest. Therefore, the use of infiltration modeling is of fundamental importance in applied hydrology and allows this process to be described through measurable quantities. In spite of the continuous development of infiltration modeling in recent decades, the estimation of infiltration at different spatial scales, i.e., from the local to watershed scales, remains a complex problem because of the natural spatial variability of both soil hydraulic characteristics and rainfall. For many years, research activity has been limited to the development of local or point infiltration models for vertically homogeneous soils with flat surfaces. Recent scientific literature has extended infiltration modeling to many other involved elements whose representation, however, still represents an open problem. In this context, this volume attempts to make a contribution to the modeling of point infiltration into vertically non-uniform soils or soils modified by human activities, infiltration over horizontal heterogeneous areas, infiltration into soil surfaces with significant slopes, interaction between the infiltration process and the groundwater system, and infiltration due to irrigation and the surface water–groundwater dynamics.

So far, single-phase flows in porous media have been treated or at least formulated satisfactorily, while the subject of two-phase flow and the related heat-transfer in porous media is still in its infancy. This book identifies the principles of transport in porous media and compares the avalaible predictions based on theoretical treatments of various transport mechanisms with the existing experimental results. The theoretical treatment is based on the volume-averaging of the momentum and energy equations with the closure conditions necessary for obtaining solutions. While emphasizing a basic understanding of heat transfer in porous media, this book does not ignore the need for predictive tools; whenever a rigorous theoretical treatment of a phenomena is not avaliable, semi-empirical and empirical treatments are given.

They belong to a class of fluids with nonsymmetric stress tensor that we shall call polar fluids, and include, as a special case, the well-established Navier-Stokes model of classical fluids that we shall call ordinary fluids. Physically, micropolar fluids may represent fluids consisting of rigid, randomly oriented (or spherical) particles suspended in a viscous medium, where the deformation of fluid particles is ignored. The model of micropolar fluids introduced in [65] by C. A. Eringen is worth studying as a very well balanced one. First, it is a well-founded and significant generalization of the classical Navier-Stokes model, covering, both in theory and applications, many more phenomena than the classical one. Moreover, it is elegant and not too complicated, in other words, man ageable to both mathematicians who study its theory and physicists and engineers who apply it. The main aim of this book is to present the theory of micropolar fluids, in particular its mathematical theory, to a wide range of readers. The book also presents two applications of micropolar fluids, one in the theory of lubrication and the other in the theory of porous media, as well as several exact solutions of particular problems and a numerical method. We took pains to make the presentation both clear and uniform.

Book excerpt: Heat transfer and fluid flow through porous media was investigated using numerical simulations and experiment. For the numerical simulations, two models were created. The first consisted of a two-dimensional numerical model created in MathCAD and was solved using the finite difference approach. The MathCAD model's flow in the porous media was described by the Brinkman-Forchheimer-extended Darcy equation. The second model consisted of a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) porous media model using Fluent and was solved using the finite volume approach. Both models assumed constant fluid phase and properties. Pore diameters were held constant for each simulation; two different porosities were investigated. Boundary conditions were applied at the wall in which the temperatures of the fluid and the porous media were determined by coupled energy equations. The effects of the boundary condition, the Reynolds number, porosity, and heat input were examined.
