Book Using Nitrogen 14 Nuclear Quadrupole Resonance and Electric Field Gradient Information for the Study of Radiation Effects

Download or read book Using Nitrogen 14 Nuclear Quadrupole Resonance and Electric Field Gradient Information for the Study of Radiation Effects written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nitrogen-14 nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) was used in an attempt to detect the effects of ionizing radiation on organic material. Previously reported resonances for urea were detected at 2,913.32 ± 0.01 kHz and 2,347.88 ± 0.08 kHz with associated T2* values 780 ± 20?s and 523 ± 24?s, respectively. The previously unreported? line for urea-d4 was detected at 2,381 ± 0.04 Khz and used to determine accurately for the first time the values for the nuclear quadrupole coupling constant? (3,548.74 ± 0.03 kHz) and the asymmetry parameter? (0.31571 ± 0.00007) for urea-d4. The inverse linewidth parameter T2* for?+ was measured at 928 ± 23?s and for?− at 721 ± 12?s. Townes and Dailey analysis was performed and urea-d4 exhibits a 0.004 increase in lone pair electronic density and a slight decrease in N-H bond electronic density, as compared to urea, probably due to the mass difference. A relationship is proposed, referred to as NQR linewidth analysis, between the dynamic spin relaxation times T2 and T2* and the widths of the distributions of the NQR parameters. Linewidth analysis is presented as a tool for possible use in future NQR work in all area, not just radiation effects. This relationship is tested using sodium nitrite T2 and T2* values for?− and?− as a function of temperature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To date nitrogen NMR has been discussed in research papers and review articles throughout the scientific literature. It has been our aim in preparing this book to provide a comprehen sive account of the widely spread applications of nitrogen NMR. The relevant literature has been surveyed from the beginnings of NMR until early 1972. The steady annual growth in the number of references cited since 1965 is ample evidence of the ever increasing importance of the subject. Sufficient theoretical and experimental background is given for an understanding of the applications dealt with in later chapters. The basic principles of NMR are developed with a theoretical approach to chemical shifts and spin-spin coupling constants, particular emphasis being given to nitrogen nuclei. Following this the experimental aspects of nitrogen NMR are adequately described. Special emphasis is given to the observable effects of the nuclear quadrupole moment of the 14 N nucleus. It is appro priate that this topic be dealt with in depth since quadrupolar interactions frequently dominate the information available from a study of the 14 N nucleus and other nuclei spin coupled to it. The applications of nitrogen chemical shift data to organic and inorganic molecules are covered in two extensive chapters which include the effects of paramagnetism on nitrogen NMR.
