Book Sea Surface Temperature Synoptic Analysis

Download or read book Sea Surface Temperature Synoptic Analysis written by Blair W. Gibson and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A technique is described for preparing detailed sea surface temperature analyses for large ocean areas. These analyses utilize injection tempera ture observations taken by commercial ships. The inadequacies of analyses based on averaged data and some difficulties inherent in contouring scalar fields are discussed. Sea surface temperatures are interpreted according to some concepts derived from cross-sectional profiles and surface current data. Isotach analyses of mean current drift are considered as flow pat terns to aid temperature analysis in areas where data are sparse. (Author).

Book A Pilot Data Analysis of Sea Surface Temperatures and Wind Speeds Measured on Oceanic Weather Ship PAPA

Download or read book A Pilot Data Analysis of Sea Surface Temperatures and Wind Speeds Measured on Oceanic Weather Ship PAPA written by P. A. Jacobs and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This note describes the results of an exploratory data-analytic study of sea surface temperatures and wind speeds measured on Oceanic Weather Ship PAPA. Spectral analysis indicates that sea surface temperatures and wind speeds have seasonal effects. Detrended sea surface temperatures and wind speeds exhibit the following association. Positive changes between days t and t-1 in the inverse residual sea surface temperature are associated with large residual wind speeds on day t and large residual sea surface temperatures on day t-1. This association can be explained by the behavior of the oceanic mixed layer depth.

Book Data Requirements for Synoptic Sea Surface Temperature Analyses

Download or read book Data Requirements for Synoptic Sea Surface Temperature Analyses written by Richard W. James (Ph. D.) and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A series of tests was conducted to determine data requirements for synoptic sea surface temperature analyses. Random plots of various concentrations of perfect temperature data were analyzed manually and by computer techniques to establish analysis accuracies as a function of the quantity of data input. A random error function was utilized to introduce errors in the temperature data + or - 1 to 7 F in accuracy and + or - 12 miles in positioning. Analyses of various quantities and qualities of input data show that the present data input would have to be increased by a factor of 5 or 6 to ensure reliable analyses of a complex thermal area. By using improved instrumentation, such as the airborne radiation thermometer (ART), buoys, and the near-surface reference temperature device (NSRT), the requirements for data can be halved. That is, 25 to 30 observations per day per 5-degree square of ocean would be required for areas like the Gulf Stream. For less complex areas, such as the Sargasso Sea, only 6 to 8 reports per day are required for the same size area, assuming the observations are taken by reliable instrumentation. Ship injection temperatures (not NSRT) in any quantity will not provide the desired reliability of analysis in these areas. ART surveys are highly recommended for complex areas where large quantities of fairly reliable data are required. These data would be wasted in less complex areas, where a few buoys of high accuracy can provide sufficient information. (Author).

Book Potential Impact of Satellite Data on Sea Surface Temperature Analysis

Download or read book Potential Impact of Satellite Data on Sea Surface Temperature Analysis written by John C. Wilkerson and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sea surface temperature field of a 10 x 20 degree area of the North Atlantic is constructed from synoptic temperatures of the ocean surface obtained from High Resolution Infrared Radiometer (HRIR) data from NIMBUS II meteorological satellite. The computer analysis of these satellite data is compared with the computer analysis of three and one half days of conventional ship data produced for the same time period by the Fleet Numerical Weather Central (FNWC), Monterey, California, with a manual analysis of the same ship data prepared by the Fleet Weather Central, Norfolk, Virginia, and with an experimental numerical analysis done by NAVOCEANO. Book A Synoptic Approach to Studying Changes in Sea Surface Temperature Using Geostationary Satellite Data

Download or read book A Synoptic Approach to Studying Changes in Sea Surface Temperature Using Geostationary Satellite Data written by M. R. Stevenson and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data from radiometers aboard meteorological satellites provide a unique method of study surface thermal features of the ocean on a large scale, synoptic basis. The utility of such a data base, however, depends upon both thermal and spatial resolution of the sensors. Because the geostationary SMS and GOES satellites provide essentially the same geometric prespective each time the earth is scanned, this type of orbital platform was selected for use in this study. Three computer programs are used in sequence to process and convert the data into a machine contoured map of surface temperature. Each chart covers a 15 deg x 15 deg area and uses a map scale of 8 million to 1. The contour interval is set at 2 deg C. When the software becomes operational, the contoured maps of temperature will be of considerable use for diverse regional studies such as marine climatology and marine resource development.
