Book Formation Of The Solar System The Theories Old And New 2nd Edition

Download or read book Formation Of The Solar System The Theories Old And New 2nd Edition written by Woolfson Michael Mark and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2014-09-11 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fully-updated second edition remains the only truly detailed exploration of the origins of our Solar System, written by an authority in the field. Unlike other authors, Michael Woolfson focuses on the formation of the solar system, engaging the reader in an intelligent yet accessible discussion of the development of ideas about how the Solar System formed from ancient times to the present.Within the last five decades new observations and new theoretical advances have transformed the way scientists think about the problem of finding a plausible theory. Spacecraft and landers have explored the planets of the Solar System, observations have been made of Solar-System bodies outside the region of the planets and planets have been detected and observed around many solar-type stars. This new edition brings in the most recent discoveries, including the establishment of dwarf planets and challenges to the ‘standard model’ of planet formation — the Solar Nebula Theory. While presenting the most up-to-date material and the underlying science of the theories described, the book avoids technical jargon and terminology. It thus remains a digestible read for the non-expert interested reader, whilst being detailed and comprehensive enough to be used as an undergraduate physics and astronomy textbook, where the formation of the solar system is a key part of the course.Michael Woolfson is Emeritus Professor of Theoretical Physics at University of York and is an award-winning crystallographer and astronomer.

Book Planetary Motion

Download or read book Planetary Motion written by P. Andrew Karam and published by Infobase Publishing. This book was released on 2014-05-14 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thousands of years ago, people looked at the sky in wonder, fascinated by the motions of a few wandering stars. Nobody understood where these wandering objects--now named Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn--came from, why they moved, or what drove their motions through the sky. Today, people know these objects are planets, but the quest to reach this understanding took thousands of years, and the consequences were profound. Famous scientists Johannes Kepler, Edmund Halley, Isaac Newton, and others discovered the laws of gravity and planetary motion, using these laws to explain the workings of the solar system. Their findings allowed the human race to find its way from planet to planet with unmanned probes and eventually allowed people to reach the moon. In "Planetary Motion," learn how scientists have found new planets outside the solar system, and continue their search for planets like Earth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analysis of the orbital motion of the Earth, the Moon and other planets and their satellites led to the discovery that all bodies in the Solar System are moving with the first cosmic velocity of their proto parents. The mean orbital velocity of each planet is equal to the first cosmic velocity of the Protosun, the radius of which is equal to the semi-major axis of the planet’s orbit. The same applies for the planets’ satellites. All the small planets, comets, other bodies and the Sun itself follow this law, a finding that has also been proven by astronomical observations. The theoretical solutions based on the Jacobi dynamics explain the process of the system creation and decay, as well as the nature of Kepler’s laws.

Book NEW THEORY OF PLANETARY MOTION AND NEW FORMULA OF UNIVERSAL GRAVITATION

Download or read book NEW THEORY OF PLANETARY MOTION AND NEW FORMULA OF UNIVERSAL GRAVITATION written by WANG JIANHUA and published by American Academic Press. This book was released on 2022-09-12 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If the solar system is regarded as a moving mass point system, then both the planet m and the sun M move around the solar system mass center O. According to the motion law of the mass point system and the centripetal force formula of the curve, it can be determined through theoretical analysis and mathematical derivation: (1) Kepler's law of planetary motion contradicts the motion rules of mass point systems. (2) The universal gravitational force F between planet m and sun M. K is the new gravitational constant. The force F' on the object m in the inertial frame S'. In the formula, V' is the velocity of the object m in the inertial frame S', and u is the velocity of the inertial frame S' in the cosmic space reference frame. In addition, the author designed three new optical experiments based on the light interference theory to verify whether the principle of constant speed of light conforms to objective facts. Experiment 1. Using the new front and rear hole laser interferometer for verification; Experiment 2. Verification of using long and short optical path Michelson interferometers; Experiment 3. Verification of using a double-hole interferometer.

  • Author : Thomas Nail

Download or read book Theory of the Earth written by Thomas Nail and published by Stanford University Press. This book was released on 2021-04-27 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We need a new philosophy of the earth. Geological time used to refer to slow and gradual processes, but today we are watching land sink into the sea and forests transform into deserts. We can even see the creation of new geological strata made of plastic, chicken bones, and other waste that could remain in the fossil record for millennia or longer. Crafting a philosophy of geology that rewrites natural and human history from the broader perspective of movement, Thomas Nail provides a new materialist, kinetic ethics of the earth that speaks to this moment. Climate change and other ecological disruptions challenge us to reconsider the deep history of minerals, atmosphere, plants, and animals and to take a more process-oriented perspective that sees humanity as part of the larger cosmic and terrestrial drama of mobility and flow. Building on his earlier work on the philosophy of movement, Nail argues that we should shift our biocentric emphasis from conservation to expenditure, flux, and planetary diversity. Theory of the Earth urges us to rethink our ethical relationship to one another, the planet, and the cosmos at large.

Book The Origin and Evolution of the Solar System

Download or read book The Origin and Evolution of the Solar System written by Michael M. Woolfson and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2000-01-01 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The origin of the solar system has been a matter of speculation for many centuries, and since the time of Newton it has been possible to apply scientific principles to the problem. A succession of theories, starting with that of Pierre Laplace in 1796, has gained general acceptance, only to fall from favor due to its contradiction in some basic scientific principle or new heavenly observation. Modern observations by spacecraft of the solar system, the stars, and extra-solar planetary systems continuously provide new information that may be helpful in finding a plausible theory as well as present new constraints for any such theory to satisfy. The Origin and Evolution of the Solar System begins by describing historical (pre-1950) theories and illustrating why they became unacceptable. The main part of the book critically examines five extant theories, including the current paradigm, the solar nebula theory, to determine how well they fit with accepted scientific principles and observations. This analysis shows that the solar nebula theory satisfies the principles and observational constraints no better than its predecessors. The capture theory put forward by the author fares better and also indicates an initial scenario leading to a causal series of events that explain all the major features of the solar system.

This is the only book on the whole landscape of deep Earth processes which ties together all the strands of the subdisciplines. It is a complete update of Anderson's Theory of the Earth (1989). It includes many new sections and dozens of new figures and tables. As with the original book, this new edition will prove to be a stimulating textbook on advanced courses in geophysics, geochemistry, and planetary science, and supplementary textbook on a wide range of other advanced Earth science courses. It will also be an essential reference and resource for all researchers in the solid Earth sciences.
