Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New Study of the Sonnets of Shakespeare The greater part of what is contained in this volume was originally prepared as an informal address to a small circle of friends; but as it soon became evident that the subject could not be brought within the compass of that mode of communication, the author was induced to change the matter he had in hand into the more formal and deliberate shape of a essay. It would have been better for him, in order to avoid possible repetitions, oversights, and peculiarities of diction not suited to an elaborate treatise, if he had written the whole work over again, but he was warned against that labor by his advancing years, which might add to, instead of decreasing, the defects of his performance. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'James Anthony has done something I would have confidently stated to be impossible. He has "translated" Shakespeare’s sonnets and he has done so with an insolent, loveable charm ... A dazzling success’ – Stephen Fry Rediscover the greatest love poetry ever written Shall I compare you to a summer’s day? You’re more delightful, always shining strong; High winds blow hard on flowering buds in May, And summer never seems to last that long... Shakespeare’s sonnets are some of the nation’s favourite lines of verse, but the Elizabethan language can make it difficult to really understand them. Many guides offer to clarify the meaning, but lose the magic of the words by explaining them away. James Anthony has done something boldly different. He has rewritten the whole series of poems as sonnets using modern language, while retaining the rhythm and rhyme patterns that gives them such power. In doing so he breathes new life into the original poems and opens them up for a modern readership, demystifying Shakespeare’s eternal poetry with provocative new translations and delightful new lines. Presented as an attractive book with the original sonnets facing their new translations, this is a stunning collection of beautiful love poems, made new.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Remarks on the Sonnets of Shakespeare; With the Sonnets: Showing That They Belong to the Hermetic Class of Writings, and Explaining Their General Meaning and Purpose He had again and again had the Sonnets themselves under his eye, with a vague sense of there being some peculiarity about them, which he had however never attempted to understand or explain; but he was now disposed to occupy his somewhat wandering attention with them, seeing that others had apparently made them a fruitless study. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Great Pan Lives; Shakespeare's Sonnets, 20-126: With Paraphrase and References In the present work I invite the Reader to a special study of the Evolution of the Ideal observable in Sonnets 20 - 126. To assist perception, the secondary or dumb signification of these sonnets, except when it speaks in effect with more than usual plainness, is paraphrased almost lineally. The references are the basis of the paraphrase. If the Reader will consult them steadily, he will find himself engaged in work of systematic textual comparison, which will afford him literary pleasure and enlightenment and the cumulative interest almost of independent-discovery, and will assure him of the fact that the paraphrase is not an arbitrary composition, but is supported adequately by textual evidence. In further aid, the parallel passages indicated by the references are woven to a consider able extent into the paraphrase. It is essential to a comprehension of the subject that the sonnets contained in this book should be studied in their numerical order. Sonnets 1 - 19, 127 - 154 are omitted. I reserve methodic elucidation of the secondary signification of these sonnets to another time and place. References to them in the following pages can be looked up in ordinary editions. Book An Introduction to the Philosophy of Shakespeare s Sonnets Classic Reprint

Download or read book An Introduction to the Philosophy of Shakespeare s Sonnets Classic Reprint written by Richard Simpson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An Introduction to the Philosophy of Shakespeare's Sonnets by Richard Simpson is a path breaking piece of work deconstructing the nuances of Shakespeare's lyrical poems. The underlying premise that Richard Simpson works with is the that Shakespeare is describing a part of himself in his lyrical poems, as compared to his dramatic poetry where he is only building characters and breathing life into them. In this endeavour, the author of An Introduction to the Philosophy of Shakespeare's Sonnets brings out the true feelings, dispositions and judgements of Shakespeare as a poet. Simpson keenly traces the Renaissance philosophy of love propounded by Plato and contextualizes the same in the light of Shakespeare's sonnets. The underpinnings of An Introduction to the Philosophy of Shakespeare's Sonnets rest upon Simpson's explanation of scales of love and the various stages which the two scales of imaginative and ideal love go through in the light of Shakespeare's sonnets. The book is well laid out with an intellectually stimulating introduction that sets the tone for the future sections. Drawing parallels with philosophical thought of well-known scholars, Simpson is able to bring out a side of Shakespeare hitherto ignored by many. The seven chapters of An Introduction to the Philosophy of Shakespeare's Sonnets serve up a literary treat for the reader, be it for casual interest or for in depth research as one of the primary texts on Shakespeare's sonnets.
