Download or read book A New Sensing System for Pre excavation Subsurface Investigation for Tunnels in Rock Masses Appendices Detailed theoretical experimental and economic foundation written by and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report includes a feasibility study and system design for an initial prototype of a sensing system for pre-excavation subsurface investigation for tunnels in rock. Tunnels in rock are very expensive, and costs often rise far above estimates when unforeseen problems are encountered during excavation. New techniques in rapid excavation technology, such as the development of boring machines, have increased the need for improved site investigation. Possibilities for a new sensing system that will provide more complete data on subsurface conditions were investigated. Favorable results obtained from high-resolution geophysical sensing in boreholes have been combined with improvements in drilling of long, horizontal, precise boreholes in order to provide an economical alternative to pilot tunnel for subsurface investigation.

Download or read book Site Investigation written by CR Clayton and published by Wiley-Blackwell. This book was released on 1995-09-06 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Site investigation is the crucial first step in design and construction, when the cost and practicality of a project are evaluated. It is also a necessary part of the investigation of building failures. This major reference work describes the organization of site investigation, the plant, sampling equipment and interpretation of results. The second edition includes new material on specification and procurement, desk studies on geophysics, sample disturbance and sampling methods, in-situ testing and laboratory testing.

Download or read book Rock Mechanics written by Barry H. G. Brady and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1993 with total page 596 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although Rock Mechanics addresses many of the rock mechanics issues which arise in underground mining engineering, it is not a text exclusively for mining applications. It consists of five categories of topics on the science and practice of rock engineering: basic engineering principles relevant to rock mechanics; mechanical properties of rock and rock masses; design of underground excavations in various rock mass conditions; mining methods and their implementation; and guidelines on rock mechanics practice. Throughout the text, and particularly in those sections concerned with excavation design and design of mining layouts, reference is made to computational methods of analysis of stress and displacement in a rock mass. The principles of various computational schemes, such as boundary element, finite element and distinct element methods, are considered. This new edition has been completely revised to reflect the notable innovations in mining engineering and the remarkable developments in the science of rock mechanics and the practice of rock engineering that have taken place over the last two decades. Based on extensive professional, research and teaching experience, this book will provide an authoritative and comprehensive text for final year undergraduates and commencing postgraduate students. For professional practitioners, not only will it be of interest to mining and geological engineers but also to civil engineers, structural and mining geologists and geophysicists as a standard work for professional reference purposes. B.H.G. Brady is Emeritus Professor and former Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics at The University of Western Australia, and a consulting rock mechanics engineer. E.T. Brown is Senior Consultant, Golder Associates Pty Ltd, Brisbane, Australia and formerly Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor of The University of Queensland, Australia.
Download or read book Rock Fractures and Fluid Flow written by Committee on Fracture Characterization and Fluid Flow and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1996-09-10 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientific understanding of fluid flow in rock fractures--a process underlying contemporary earth science problems from the search for petroleum to the controversy over nuclear waste storage--has grown significantly in the past 20 years. This volume presents a comprehensive report on the state of the field, with an interdisciplinary viewpoint, case studies of fracture sites, illustrations, conclusions, and research recommendations. The book addresses these questions: How can fractures that are significant hydraulic conductors be identified, located, and characterized? How do flow and transport occur in fracture systems? How can changes in fracture systems be predicted and controlled? Among other topics, the committee provides a geomechanical understanding of fracture formation, reviews methods for detecting subsurface fractures, and looks at the use of hydraulic and tracer tests to investigate fluid flow. The volume examines the state of conceptual and mathematical modeling, and it provides a useful framework for understanding the complexity of fracture changes that occur during fluid pumping and other engineering practices. With a practical and multidisciplinary outlook, this volume will be welcomed by geologists, petroleum geologists, geoengineers, geophysicists, hydrologists, researchers, educators and students in these fields, and public officials involved in geological projects.
