This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of the Books of the New Testament This book is the outgrowth of a series of sermons preached on the Gospels nine years ago in my first pastoral charge. These sermons were rewritten and published in the Presbyterian Journal of Philadelphia. Favorable notice having been accorded these articles, I was led to continue them by writing introductory articles to the other books of the New Testament for the same paper. The kind encouragement and advice of Professor Warfield, under whose able instruction in Allegheny Seminary I was permitted to study for four years, led me to think of rewriting the whole series with the view of publishing them in book form when completed. As my ministry progressed, I was also impressed with the need of having a popular treatise on New Testament Introduction for uses of instruction among the people of my charge. These things led me on in my work until it is now completed. To the wise council and timely criticisms of Dr. Warfield I am deeply indebted, for through the years that have elapsed since the inception of this work, he has repeatedly encouraged me. But my chief acknowledgments are due to my colleague in our Divinity School, Dr. Gwynn, who has taken, on my behalf, an amount of trouble which, if I were not somewhat ashamed of having imposed so much. Book An Introduction to the Study of the New Testament Vol 1 of 2

Download or read book An Introduction to the Study of the New Testament Vol 1 of 2 written by Samuel Davidson and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of the New Testament, Vol. 1 of 2: Critical, Exegetical, and Theological Since the first edition appeared, the chief work on Introduction to the New Testament has been Hilgenfeld's 'Einleitung, ' the outcome of many books and essays published by that indefatigable scholar. His 'Zeit-schrift' also presents valuable critical investigations by the editor himself, Professor Holtzmann, and others, all tending to illustrate the Christian Scriptures. Mangold supplies useful additions to Bleek's ' Introduction.' Professor Reuss's recent publications on the New Testament are somewhat disappointing, savouring as they do of the Vermittelungs-Theologie, and influenced to some extent by a reactionary spirit towards the Tubingen school. Though this school as represented by Baur and Schwegler has carried its speculations too far, the important advance it has made in the criticism of the New Testament cannot be reversed. Modified it may be; but its mark upon early Christian literature is deep and permanent. In correcting its excesses moderation must be carefully preserved, for examples of backwardism are usually weak. A few faults of the 'Tendenz-Kritik' leave its basis secure. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Critical Study and Knowledge of the Holy Scriptures, Vol. 4 The second portion of this volume consists of Introductions to the respective books of the New Testament. And here I am not author, but simply editor. Here I felt that I stood on very different ground from that which I had occupied with regard to the Textual portion of the volume. I had not so much to consider how I should have treated the subjects, as what addition might be needful, in consequence of modern research, to what the Rev. T. H. Home had him self stated. It was not for me to pull down one edifice in order to erect another in its stead; to do this for the mere sake of change, would be like removing an old manor house to make room for a trim Italian villa. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in the New Testament Studies in the New Testament is a compilation, that and nothing more. The writer makes no claim to originality. The plan adopted in presenting the truths and facts herein collated is, however, original. The compiler is not aware that any Catholic publica tion house in this country, at least, has published a book written on similar lines. Not the least of the difficulties encountered in the preparation of this book, was the verification of dates. It is difficult to state with certainty the precise dates at which many of the sacred books were written. Without mentioning other reliable sources, the R0 man Breviary has furnished much of the material for the biographical sketches.
