Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from German for Beginners Do not hurry! To make a high school class study the whole of German grammar in less than a year is a crime; and two years are very much better than one year. The following arrangement of time and work has been found very effective for the average class and the average chapter of grammar (some of the more difficult chapters will require a slower pace) monday: Review of last week's work. The teacher explains (as far as possible, in German) a new text and assigns it for reading (with the help of the Special Vocabularies and Notes). Tuesday: The text is read in class; fluent reading is insisted upon. German questions, similar to those in Part II, are answered in German, with the books open; new grammatical features are explained (in English, when necessary). Assignment: Practise the text and read the corresponding Lesson practising a text means reading and re-reading it aloud, until the student is able to answer the German questions in Part II by heart. Wednesday: German questions (not necessarily those in Part II, but of a similar nature) are answered in Ger man with the books closed. The new grammatical mate rial is practised (declensions and conjugations with the help of whole sentences rather than detached paradigms). Assignment: Prepare Drill in Part II; write German answers to a selected number of the Questions. Thursday: The Drill work is practised (partly by writing on the blackboard); practice, as on the preced ing day, is repeated. Assignment: study the correspond ing grammar lesson; study the text for oral reproduction. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A German Grammar for Beginners: Adapted From Lange's German Method IN beginning German, most teachers use simple stones in connection with thd grammar drill. Difficulties arise from the necessity of learning two vocabularies, as well as from the lack of correlation between the Stories and the grammar. In this book the commonest words of the reading form the vocabulary of the exercises, thus maintaining interest and allowing more time for grammar work. The stories, taken from Lange' s German Method, were written expressly for this purpose. The first is about the school, the second about the home, thus giving the pupil at the outset familiar and usable words. These are mainly cognates, so that the, reading may be begun as soon as the German letters have been learned. An effort has been made to aid the student of the language by adding necessary historical remarks and by furnishing complete lists of important classes of nouns, adjectives, verbs and the like. Exercises. Particular attention has been given to the Exercises in this book. In the first place, all exercises have been constructed in the form of connected discourse, thus encouraging the habit of natural, logical thought and discussion in the language from the beginning. Much time is wasted by the student who learns disconnected sentences without making the language a vehicle of his own thought. It furnishes the frame-work for a more complete and laborious study of grammar; and by fixing the elementary, and essential parts, firmly in the memory of the incipient scholar, serves as the best introduction to a well-grounded and comprehensive knowledge. The book is intended for beginners, and experience has shown that, for such a purpose, it proves very useful. The nature and intention of it were not immediately. Book A Compendious German Grammar Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Compendious German Grammar Classic Reprint written by William Dwight Whitney and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-25 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Compendious German Grammar A. Careful distinction of the contents of the book by variety of type, according to their degree of immediate importance, has been attempted throughout. Especially, I have meant to put into the largest type (sm. Pica) just about so much as the scholar ought to learn carefully and thoroughly in his first course of grammar-lessons, preparatory to reading. This a class should acquire, according to the age and capacity and previous training of its members, in from twelve to twenty-five lessons; and should then at once be put into reading, while the grammar is taken up again, and such part of what was before omitted is learned as the judgment of the intelligent teacher shall direct. It is solely as auxiliary to the first course of lessons that the Exercises are intended - to furnish, namely, to the teacher the opportunity of drilling his pupils in the practical application of the more important rules and principles while they are learning them, or gaining practice in parsing, subject by sub ject, instead of leaving the whole work to be taken up at once when reading is begun. While believing that they will be found valuable in this way, I would not press their use, but would leave it to each one's decision whether to employ or neglect them. Nothing has been put in the largest type after the subject of conjugation is finished, nor anything anywhere in syntax: the main principles of construction, and the use of particles, are sufficiently alike in English and German to allow the pupil to begin reading without having studied them especially in German. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Practical German Grammar When an inventor announces a new and improved reaping-machine or printing-press, he does so in the hope and belief that it contains essential qualities which are absent from those of his predecessors, and he further designs it to meet the increased improvements of the age. And so it is with books, be they Grammars, Dictionaries, Guide-books, or Gazetteers. We perceive, from our own experience, what is lacking in those already in existence. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ollendorff's New Method of Learning to Read, Write, and Speak the German Language: To Which Is Added a Systematic Outline of German Grammar The book, as it is now presented to the public, is from the Frankfort edition, which, in accuracy of expression, as far as the English is concerned, in the wording of the rules as well as in typographical arrangement, is so far superior to the Lon don edition, that it seems to be the work of a different author. So striking was found to be the difference between the two edi tions that the Editor, who alfirst was not in possession of a German copy, and had already put into the hands of the printer a considerable portion of the London copy revised, deemed it afterwards his duty to recommence the ste'reotyplng of the book on the basis df the German. Book Ollendorff s New Method of Learning to Read Write and Speak the German Language Classic Reprint

Download or read book Ollendorff s New Method of Learning to Read Write and Speak the German Language Classic Reprint written by Heinrich Gottfried Ollendorff and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-21 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ollendorff's New Method of Learning to Read, Write, and Speak the German Language The success of Ollendorff is unquestionably due to his method, by which he has made the German, heretofore noto riously difficult to foreigners, accessible to the capacity of all, young or old, learned or unlearned. Instead of pre-supposing a familiarity with English Grammar in the pupil, and then presenting a synthetic view of the principles of the language, as is commonly done, he begins apparently without any system, with the simplest phrases, from which he deduces the rules, until gradually and almost imperceptibly he makes the pupil master of the etymology and syntax of every part of speech. The rules are, as it were, concealed amid the multitude of exercises which are added to each lesson, and which serve to fortify the learner in the principles he has already acquired. Another characteristic feature of the book, and one in which its practical merit chiefly consists is, that the examples on which the rules are based, and those which are intended to illustrate the rules, are not derived from the German Classics; they are neither the ideal language of Poetry, nor the rigorous language of Science, but of life, - short sentences, such as one would be most likely to use in conversing in a circle of friends, or in writing a letter.
