Book Food in Shakespeare

Download or read book Food in Shakespeare written by Joan Fitzpatrick and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study of common and exotic food in Shakespeare's plays, this is the first book to explore early modern English dietary literature to understand better the significance of food in Shakespearean drama. Food in Shakespeare provides for modern readers and audiences an historically accurate account of the range of, and conflicts between, contemporary ideas that informed the representations of food in the plays. It also focuses on the social and moral implications of familiar and strange foodstuff in Shakespeare's works. This new approach provides substantial fresh readings of Hamlet, Macbeth, As you Like It, The Winter's Tale, Henry IV Parts 1 and 2, Henry V, Titus Andronicus, Coriolanus, Pericles, Timon of Athens, and the co-authored Sir Thomas More. Among the dietaries explored are Andrew Boorde's A Compendyous Regyment or a Dyetary of Healthe (1547), William Bullein's The Gouernement of Healthe (1595), Thomas Elyot's The Castle of Helthe (1595) and Thomas Cogan's The Hauen of Health (1636). These dieteries were republished several times in the early modern period; together they typify the genre's condemnation of surfeit and the tendency to blame human disease on feeding practices. This study directs scholarly attention to the importance of early modern dietaries, analyzing their role in wider culture as well as their intersection with dramatic art. In the dietaries food and drink are indices of one's position in relation to complex ideas about rank, nationality, and spiritual well-being; careful consumption might correct moral as well as physical shortcomings. The dietaries are an eclectic genre: some contain recipes for the reader to try, others give tips on more general lifestyle choices, but all offer advice on how to maintain good health via diet. Although some are more stern and humourless than others, the overwhelming impression is that of food as an ally in the battle against disease and ill-health as well as a potential enemy.

Book excerpt: A not-for-the-squeamish journey back through the centuries to urban England, where the streets are crowded, noisy, filthy, and reeking of smoke and decay Modern city-dwellers suffer their share of unpleasant experiences—traffic jams, noisy neighbors, pollution, food scares—but urban nuisances of the past existed on a different scale entirely, this book explains in vivid detail. Focusing on offenses to the eyes, ears, noses, taste buds, and skin of inhabitants of England's pre-Industrial Revolution cities, Hubbub transports us to a world in which residents were scarred by smallpox, refuse rotted in the streets, pigs and dogs roamed free, and food hygiene consisted of little more than spit and polish. Through the stories of a large cast of characters from varied walks of life, the book compares what daily life was like in different cities across England from 1600 to 1770. Using a vast array of sources, from novels to records of urban administration to diaries, Emily Cockayne populates her book with anecdotes from the quirky lives of the famous and the obscure—all of whom confronted urban nuisances and physical ailments. Each chapter addresses an unpleasant aspect of city life (noise, violence, moldy food, smelly streets, poor air quality), and the volume is enhanced with a rich array of illustrations. Awakening both our senses and our imaginations, Cockayne creates a nuanced portrait of early modern English city life, unparalleled in breadth and unforgettable in detail.

This book was released on 2019-11-14 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Tryon lived a fascinating life as an early promoter of vegetarianism, author, hat seller, ascetic and much more. Born into poverty in 1634 England, he worked with sheep, both in the manufacture of wool, as well as a shepherd. Despite the hard circumstances of his life, he independently learned how to read and write, as he could not afford formal schooling. Around the age of 18, he moved away from his childhood home in Bibury and to London to learn the trade of hatting. He became an Anabaptist, but later became a vegetarian after a spiritual experience. He moved to Barbados seeking others to convert to his spiritual beliefs, and also to grow his hat business, but he was appalled by the barbaric practice of slavery he saw there. He returned to London and then began his voluminous writing efforts. He focused on self-help type books, encouraging people to abstain from alcohol, to live non-violently, to promote education, environmentalism and vegetarianism, among other things. His books found a wide audience, including influencing Benjamin Franklin.
