Book excerpt: James Hardy Vaux (born 1782) was an English-born convict transported to Australia on three separate occasions. He was the author of Memoirs of James Hardy Vaux including A Vocabulary of the Flash Language, first published in 1819, which is regarded as both the first full length autobiography and first dictionary written in Australia. Whilst banished to the Newcastle penal settlement for much of the period from 1811 to 1818, Vaux compiled two works. The first was a dictionary of 'flash' or cant language originally written for use by the commandant of the penal settlement in performing his magisterial duties. An edited edition by Simon Barnard was republished in 2019 as James Hardy Vaux's 1819 Dictionary of Criminal Slang.

In an attempt to preserve, improve and recreate the original content, we have worked towards: 1. Type-setting & Reformatting: The complete work has been re-designed via professional layout, formatting and type-setting tools to re-create the same edition with rich typography, graphics, high quality images, and table elements, giving our readers the feel of holding a 'fresh and newly' reprinted and/or revised edition, as opposed to other scanned & printed (Optical Character Recognition - OCR) reproductions. 2. Correction of imperfections: As the work was re-created from the scratch, therefore, it was vetted to rectify certain conventional norms with regard to typographical mistakes, hyphenations, punctuations, blurred images, missing content/pages, and/or other related subject matters, upon our consideration. Every attempt was made to rectify the imperfections related to omitted constructs in the original edition via other references. However, a few of such imperfections which could not be rectified due to intentional\unintentional omission of content in the original edition, were inherited and preserved from the original work to maintain the authenticity and construct, relevant to the work. We believe that this work holds historical, cultural and/or intellectual importance in the literary works community, therefore despite the oddities, we accounted the work for print as a part of our continuing effort towards preservation of literary work and our contribution towards the development of the society as a whole, driven by our beliefs. We are grateful to our readers for putting their faith in us and accepting our imperfections with regard to preservation of the historical content. HAPPY READING!

Book Choreographing Calligraphy

Download or read book Choreographing Calligraphy written by Katrina Plumb and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2013-05 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Greek word 'poesis' means bringing into existence expressions, which did not exist before. 'Choreographing Calligraphy' is a collection of original poetry by Katrina Plumb. She works with society's outcasts, creating an environment in which they can explore their emotions for the first time, and leave a verbal record of their experience. Double acrostics are a form, obliging the poet to combine care and curiosity conscientiously, and Katrina employs this framework to convey a wide variety of emotions, forever choreographing transformation in style. Katrina Plumb works with recovering addicts as a Creative Writing Mentor, whilst studying at Bristol University, en route to becoming a Poetry Therapist. She enjoys bringing into existence expressions that were not here before and has had a variegated life from which to draw. Double acrostics have held her fascination for the last few months, and Choreographing Transformation is a lifetime endeavor.

Book Making Common Sense of Japan

Download or read book Making Common Sense of Japan written by Steven R. Reed and published by University of Pittsburgh Pre. This book was released on 2010-11-23 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Common misconceptions about Japan begin with the notion that it is a "small" country (it's actually lager than Great Britain, Germany or Italy) and end with pronouncements that the Japanese think differently and have different values-they do things differently because that's the way they are. Steven Reed takes on the task of demystifying Japanese culture and behavior. Through examples that are familiar to an American audience and his own personal encounters with the Japanese, he argues that the apparent oddity of Japanese behavior flows quite naturally from certain objective conditions that are different from those in the United States. Mystical allegations about national character are less useful for understanding a foreign culture than a close look at specific situations and conditions. Two aspects of the Japanese economy have particularly baffled Americans: that Japanese workers have "permanent employment" and that the Japanese government cooperates with big business. Reed explains these phenomena in common sense terms. He shows how they developed historically, why they continue, and why they helped produce economic growth. He concludes that these practices are not as different from what happens in the United States as they may appear.

Book excerpt: Soon to be a major motion picture called "The Right Kind of Wrong," starring Ryan Kwanten from True Blood! "Kelly Palamino's engagingly idiosyncratic voice falls somewhere between On the Road and Bright Lights, Big City. He's the Lone Ranger in love, riding out the rough patches on a Thorazine habit." —People At twenty-nine, Kelly Palamino's a little off-kilter but settled into his career of professional dishwasher. His big, blond, ex-hippie wife has left him for good. So it's with no particular purpose that Kelly positions himself on his porch across the street from an Episcopal church in Jackson, Wyoming, to witness a singular sight: a dark-haired bride in full regalia punting a football over the rectory before turning resolutely to walk down the aisle. It's love at first sight for Kelly, and he'll do absolutely anything and everything to get his girl... "Kelly is full-tilt Gonzo crazy. But crazy people can make good protagonists, particularly when they narrate in their own uniquely whacked-out voice." —Atlanta Journal-Constitution "Tim Sandlin's first novel is impressive...[He] may be compared to Tom Robbins...but Sandlin appears to be more subtle...a fun read." —San Diego Union-Tribune "An anarchic novel that is by turns wryly observant and outrageously slapstick...a novel that shows wit and strength and a sweet sensibility toward the loser in everyone." —Kansas City Star "A potent cocktail mixture of Jack Kerouac, Tom Robbins, and David Lynch topped off with a western twist." —Denver Post

Book Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy Translated by Constance Garnett illustrated

Download or read book Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy Translated by Constance Garnett illustrated written by Leo Tolstoy and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2021-01-08 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy is a tragic novel that follows the rise and fall of the love affair between Anna Karenina and Count Vronsky. The main premise of the eight-part novel as portrayed by its main characters such as Dolly, Kitty and Stiva is the conflict between human desires and societal roles.-Part Three-Illustrated Edition By J.R Wyrhta-Contributors: Leo Tolstoy, Constance Garnett-Remastered Cover-Anna Karenina is a rich and complex meditation on passionate love and disastrous infidelity.-Characters: Vronsky, Anna, DollyVladimir Nabokov called Leo Tolstoy's Anna Karenina "one of the greatest love stories in world literature." Married to a powerful government minister, Anna Karenina is a beautiful woman who falls deeply in love with a wealthy army officer, the elegant Count Vronsky. Desperate to find truth and meaning in her life, she rashly defies the conventions of Russian society and leaves her husband and son to live with her lover. Condemned and ostracized by her peers and prone to fits of jealousy that alienate Vronsky, Anna finds herself unable to escape an increasingly hopeless situation.Set against this tragic affair is the story of Konstantin Levin, a melancholy landowner whom Tolstoy based largely on himself. While Anna looks for happiness through love, Levin embarks on his own search for spiritual fulfilment through marriage, family, and hard work. Surrounding these two central plot threads are dozens of characters whom Tolstoy seamlessly weaves together, creating a breath-taking tapestry of nineteenth-century Russian society. From its famous opening sentence- "Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way"-to its stunningly tragic conclusion, this enduring tale of marriage and adultery plumbs the very depths of the human soul. And now this classic with beauty and tenderness (and wit), illuminating them for modern readers.Categories.Classics
