Book Transition to Middle School

Download or read book Transition to Middle School written by Robert A. Reed and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This qualitative case study was designed to discover fifth and sixth grade teachers' and administrators' perceptions related to the middle school transition process relative to the academic, social, and organizational needs of students in a large, suburban school district in Pennsylvania. The participants were teachers of the core academic areas, encore subject teachers, counselors, and administrators at both the elementary and middle school levels. This research examined the results based upon the responses of 48 fifth grade teachers from ten elementary schools, 62 sixth grade teachers from two middle schools, and nine administrators from both elementary and middle schools who completed an online instrument - Perceptions of Transition Survey (POTS). The teacher and administrator POTS survey contained phrases that measured the extent to which they believe students will look forward to, may be worried about, and open-ended questions designed to obtain further teacher and administrator insight regarding the transition to middle school. Results of the study indicated all three groups (5th grade teachers, 6th grade teachers, and administrators) identified student social and academic issues as the defining characteristics of middle school transition. Identifying the consistent and inconsistent messages of school staff members across elementary and middle school buildings may guide future research as school districts strive to provide students with a successful foundation form middle school transitions.

Book Educational Transitions

Download or read book Educational Transitions written by Divya Jindal-Snape and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-12-16 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite variations of educational systems, when transitions in education occur, the pedagogical challenges that teachers and pupils undergo are quite similar across the globe. Transitions are phases in which pupils, peer groups and teachers have to renegotiate and rebuild their learning environment in the educational context. These various transitions in students' learning paths significantly impact on schools' everyday life. This volume explores transitions at all stages of educational progression, i.e., nursery to primary, primary to secondary, and secondary to post-school. It also examines these transitions across a variety of countries and types of schools. Educational Transitions provides up-to-date literature, research and theoretical constructs that help readers understand the issues, social-emotional-psychological dimensions, and evidence-based possible interventions to support an individual through these educational transitions. It also allows scholars, teachers, and students to critically analyse how lessons learned from one country can be adapted for other countries' educational systems.

Book A Framework for Successfully Transitioning Students Into the Middle Grades

Download or read book A Framework for Successfully Transitioning Students Into the Middle Grades written by Brendan Gartner and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Problem of Practice dissertation addresses the need for an elementary to middle school transition program in a school district in eastern North Carolina. To develop this program, district end-of-grade assessment results and suspension data was collected and feedback was amassed from district students, their caregivers, teachers, and school administrators. Input from students and their caregivers was gathered through a series of online questionnaires. Teacher data was collected via an online survey and school administrator feedback was gathered using a focus group interview. Stakeholder feedback was coupled with theories and strategies available through the body of literature surrounding middle school transitions to create the framework for a comprehensive middle grades transition plan that addresses the needs of stakeholders unique to this district. The developed framework provides mandatory activities for district schools to undertake along with recommended research-based strategies to assist schools in implementing the required elements of this transition plan. Recommended strategies for students, their caregivers, and teachers include suggested programs to be undertaken prior to students transitioning from grade five to grade six, programs to offer during the summer between elementary and middle school, and suggested strategies to implement once students have started in the middle grades. The study concludes with recommended changes to practice and policy specific to this district in order to provide students with additional transitional supports.

Book Creating Effective Transitions

Download or read book Creating Effective Transitions written by C. Thomas Potter and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2018-04-23 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses primarily on elementary to middle school transitions. This book was developed with a two-fold premise: one, that educators and parents understand the role they play in meeting the basic developmental needs of individual students during times of transition; and two, that school leaders understand how critically important it is for organizations to create structured transition processes to better ensure student success before, during and after transitions that supports the growth and development of students. This book includes authentic scenarios that are research-based to help combat the barriers associated with the transitional moves elementary students may experience. The goal is that school organizations and institutions will work collectively to strategically develop district-wide and inter-agency (high school and college) transition plans to help students with these critical periods.

Book Family Engagement Across the Transition from Elementary to Middle School

Download or read book Family Engagement Across the Transition from Elementary to Middle School written by Melissa Anne Baker and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing families and schools together has long been acknowledged as a factor that has a positive correlation with a young adolescent's academic achievement (Brough & Irvin, 2001; Epstein, 1990; Sheldon, 2016). At the same time, families become less engaged with schools during the middle grades. The purpose of this study was to explore parent perspectives of family engagement across their child's school transition from fifth grade in an elementary school to sixth grade in a middle school. In particular, this study sought to answer two specific research questions: (1) What are parent perspectives regarding the supports of family engagement across the school transition from elementary school to middle school? (2) What are parent perspectives of barriers to family engagement across the school transition from elementary school to middle school? Through a multi-case study design, four parent participants of sixth grade middle school students in Northeast Georgia, during the 2016-2017 school year, described their experiences. Parent perspectives were first investigated separately using within-case analysis to gain insight into their family engagement experiences with one middle school and what experiences they believed served as supports and barriers to their engaging with the middle school. Participants' perspectives were next investigated in a cross-case analysis to determine what similarities and differences of supports and barriers to family engagement across the school transition from elementary to middle school existed. Three overall themes surrounding the supports and barriers to family engagement across the school transition from elementary school to middle school emerged: (1) communication; (2) school climate, programming, and events; and (3) prior experiences. This study makes practical contributions for both research and practice in the field of school transitions and family engagement. Parent participants overwhelmingly believed elementary and middle schools involved in school transition should focus on clear, consistent, concise communication between families and schools. According to participants, schools should reach out to parents for assistance and advice to improve family engagement across the transition from elementary to middle school.

Book A Comparative Assessment of the Effective Components in an Elementary to Middle School Transition Program

Download or read book A Comparative Assessment of the Effective Components in an Elementary to Middle School Transition Program written by Lauren D. Smith and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine the viewpoints of sixth-grade students and fifth and sixth-grade teachers regarding which components of an elementary to middle school transition program they identified as being most effective. The researcher examined responses collected from 22 teachers and 95 students from two school districts located in south central Pennsylvania. The employment of two online surveys containing a combination of selected response questions, Likert-scale statements, and open-ended responses allowed for the collection of data and subsequent findings. Additional data collection transpired through voluntary interviews with six teachers conducted by an independent interviewer. The findings of this study indicate sixth-grade students identified having a tour of their middle school, having a special day or event set aside to learn about their middle school, and having time the first day or week of school to adjust to their new school as being the most effective components of their transition program. Although the ranking of these three components differed between students and teachers, response data supported teachers identifying the same three components as their top choices as the most effective components. Findings also indicated participants from both groups identified teachers as being the most helpful to students as they transitioned into middle school. The findings additionally indicated commonly identified transition components do contribute to students feeling a connection to their school. The findings of this study can guide future research for school districts as they are developing or revising their elementary to middle school transition programs.

Book The Middle School Experience

Download or read book The Middle School Experience written by Jeanne B. Repetto and published by Pro-Ed. This book was released on 2006 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Middle School Experience helps prospective or current middle school teachers succeed as they work with students who have diverse learning needs, particularly students with disabilities. This helpful book shows how to integrate transition planning with age-appropriate instruction and emotional support. Such integration fosters self-determination in students with disabilities as they progress into high school and plan for adult life. The Middle School Experience presents a model of the integration process called The MidEx Model. The MidEx Model serves dual purposes: (a) to provide information and resources to current and prospective professionals and (b) to demonstrate how teachers and other professionals can present information and resources to middle school students. Each chapter incorporates information from the MidEx Model and offers strategies for classroom implementation.
