Book Teaching Beowulf

Download or read book Teaching Beowulf written by Larry Swain and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2024-08-19 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beowulf is by far the most popular text of the medieval world taught in American classrooms, at both the high school and undergraduate levels. More students than ever before wrestle with Grendel in the darkness of Heorot or venture into the dragon’s barrow for gold and glory. This increase of attention and interest in the Old English epic has led to a myriad of new and varying translations of the poem published every year, the production of several mainstream film and television adaptations, and many graphic novel versions. More and more teachers in all sorts of classrooms, with varying degrees of familiarity and training are called upon to bring this ancient poem before their students. This practical guide to teaching Beowulf in the twenty-first century combines scholarly research with pedagogical technique, imparting a picture of how the poem can be taught in contemporary American institutions.

Book The Atlas of Wintering Birds in Britain and Ireland

Download or read book The Atlas of Wintering Birds in Britain and Ireland written by Peter Lack and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2010-11-30 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This companion volume to The Atlas of Breeding Birds of Britain and Ireland is derived from surveys of birds present in Britain and Ireland during the three winters, 1981/82, 1982/83 and 1983/84. The surveys were organised by the British Trust for Ornithology and the Irish Wildbird Conservancy, as were the earlier breeding birds surveys. The Winter Atlas maps 200 species, 192 of which have full-page two-colour maps faced by a page of text. The texts (written by over 100 specialists) comment on the survey results, the species generally and the distribution and abundance as mapped. In addition there are introductory chapters on the maps, the weather in the three winters, bird patterns and movements; and appendices describing the planning, organisation, field methods, and processing of the survey data from record cards to computer output and maps. A team of 23 artists, led by Robert Gillmor, has provided the line drawings which head the species accounts.

The succeeding chapters are devoted to land statistics for agriculture, forestry, recreation, conservation and amenity, and other rural land uses. These topics are followed by discussions of urban land estimates and use, as well as land utilization surveys. The final chapters describe the potential of maps, air photography, and improvements in land-use records. This book will prove useful to workers and researchers in the general field of planning.

Book Bird Habitats in Britain

Download or read book Bird Habitats in Britain written by R. J. Fuller and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2010-09-30 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book describes all the main habitat types, the structure and composition of bird communities, and reviews bird sites and their distribution throughout Britain. Rob Fuller's book would not have been possible but for the nationwide cooperative endeavour by amateur and professional ornithologists, naturalists and conservationists which led to the British Trust for Ornithology's Register of Ornithological Sites, sponsored by the Nature Conservancy Council. Hitherto, few books have dealt primarily with bird habitats but the subject is of urgent importance now that exploitation of the environment has left few corners of Britain untouched or unthreatened. Even so, the book is much more than timely, it also extends the reader's interest to an area of bird study that has, perhaps, been too little considered. The text is supported by more than 100 diagrams and maps, and over 50 photographs; in addition there are 53 superbly evocative drawings by Donald Watson. For the birdwatcher and all involved with conservation, this is stimulating reading and an essential reference.
