Book Taking Place Non Representational Theories and Geography

Download or read book Taking Place Non Representational Theories and Geography written by Ben Anderson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-01 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emerging over the past ten years from a set of post-structuralist theoretical lineages, non-representational theories are having a major impact within Human Geography. Non-representational theorisation and research has opened up new sets of problematics around the body, practice and performativity and inspired new ways of doing and writing human geography that aim to engage with the taking-place of everyday life. Drawing together a range of innovative contributions from leading writers, this is the first book to provide an extensive and in-depth overview of non-representational theories and human geography. The work addresses the core themes of this still-developing field, demonstrates the implications of non-representational theories for many aspects of human geographic thought and practice, and highlights areas of emergent critical debate. The collection is structured around four thematic sections - Life, Representation, Ethics and Politics - which explore the varied relations between non-representational theories and contemporary human geography.

Book Thinking Like a Planet

    Book Details:
  • Author : J. Baird Callicott
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2014-01-06
  • ISBN : 0199324905
  • Pages : 401 pages

Download or read book Thinking Like a Planet written by J. Baird Callicott and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2014-01-06 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing together ecology, evolutionary moral psychology, and environmental ethics, J. Baird Callicott counters the narrative of blame and despair that prevails in contemporary discussions of climate ethics and offers a fresh, more optimistic approach. Whereas other environmental ethicists limit themselves to what Callicott calls Rational Individualism in discussing the problem of climate change only to conclude that, essentially, there is little hope that anything will be done in the face of its "perfect moral storm" (in Stephen Gardiner's words), Callicott refuses to accept this view. Instead, he encourages us to look to the Earth itself, and consider the crisis on grander spatial and temporal scales, as we have failed to in the past. Callicott supports this theory by exploring and enhancing Aldo Leopold's faint sketch of an Earth ethic in "Some Fundamentals of Conservation in the Southwest," a seldom-studied text from the early days of environmental ethics that was written in 1923 but not published until 1979 after the environmental movement gathered strength.

Book Isles of the North

Download or read book Isles of the North written by Ian Mitchell and published by Birlinn. This book was released on 2012-07-30 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the summer of 2002, Mitchell set sail aboard the 30-foot yacht Foggy Dew on a voyage that took him from his home through the Western Isles to Orkney and Shetland and on to the west coast of Norway. Against the backdrop of one of the world's most spectacular coastlines, he sailed up the Nordfjord, down to Bergen, then out to Utsira, and back home via Inverness. The object of his journey was more than just to enjoy a few contemplative drams during a summer at sea. In this sequel to his much acclaimed Isles of the West (1999), Mitchell continues his investigation into official Britain's failure to administer rural Scotland for the mutual benefit of people and nature. Ian Mitchell's narrative combines authoritative background information and personal interviews with local people, many enlivened by the measured dispensation of Scotland's most famous aid to creative thought. He shows how Norway, a country outside the EU and therefore in control of its own resources, has been able to give a wide measure of freedom to the sort of communities which in Scotland are subject to debilitating control by Edinburgh, London and Brussels. He points to many lessons which centralised, bureaucratic Britain could learn from its more democratic neighbour across the North Sea.

Book On the Other Side of Sorrow

Download or read book On the Other Side of Sorrow written by James Hunter and published by Casemate Publishers. This book was released on 2014-07-03 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “An extraordinary intellectual voyage” through Gaelic environmental awareness, centuries ahead of its time, and its value today (The Herald). Caring for the environment, developing rural communities, and ensuring the survival of minority cultures are all laudable objectives, but they can conflict, and nowhere more so than the Scottish Highlands. As environmentalists strive to preserve the scenery and wildlife of the Highlands, the people who belong there, and who have their own claims on the landscape, question this new threat to their culture, which dates back thousands of years. In this sensitive, thought-provoking book, James Hunter probes deep into this culture to examine the dispute between Highlanders, who developed a strong environmental awareness a thousand years before other Europeans, and conservationists, whose thinking owes much to the romantic ideals of the nineteenth century. More than that, he also suggests a new way of dealing with the problem, advocating drastic land-use changes and the repopulation of empty glens—an approach that has worldwide implications. “A very thoughtful piece of advocacy.” —The Scotsman

Book Birds In Counties An Ornithological Bibliography Of The Counties Of England Wales Scotland And The Isle Of Man

Download or read book Birds In Counties An Ornithological Bibliography Of The Counties Of England Wales Scotland And The Isle Of Man written by David K Ballance and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2000-05-05 with total page 587 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an ornithological bibliography for the counties of England, Wales, and Scotland and for the Isle of Man. It includes all known books, pamphlets and papers which contain substantial studies of the birds of local areas, from a county down to a back garden or a gravel pit. Each county has an introduction on its boundaries and the history of its ornithology. There has been no comprehensive national publication of this kind since Mullens, Swann and Jourdain's Geographical Bibliography in 1920. The volume also provides a detailed record of the many county and local bird reports and of the ever-increasing number of area surveys produced by statutory and voluntary bodies. The material is arranged by the pre-1974 counties and takes the record up to 1995. There are maps to show the many changes in county boundaries since 1800.The book will be a standard reference work for libraries and collectors, and for anyone interested in the rich and diverse development of local ornithology in its homeland.
