Book excerpt: "We conducted a 40 cluster by 48 national household survey in Swaziland from May 15 to June 16, 2007. A statistically valid sample size was calculated based on available data from prior surveys conducted in South Africa. In the first stage, enumeration areas (EA) (n=40) were selected with probability of selection proportional to size. In the second stage, we selected a systematic sample of households (n=48) with a random start in each EA, yielding a total of 1920 households nationally. A questionnaire was administered to one randomly selected eligible female 13-24 years of age in the selected household. The results of this study indicate that violence against female children is highly prevalent in Swaziland. Approximately 1 in 3 females experienced some form of sexual violence as a child; nearly 1 in 4 females experienced physical violence as a child; and approximately 3 in 10 females experienced emotional abuse as a child."--Page 7.

Book Women s Empowerment and Global Health

Download or read book Women s Empowerment and Global Health written by Shari Dworkin and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "What is women's empowerment, and how and why does it matter for women's health? Despite the rise of a human rights-based approach to women's health and increasing awareness of the synergies between women's health and empowerment, a lack of consensus remains as to how to measure empowerment and successfully intervene in ways that improve health. Women's Empowerment and Global Health provides thirteen detailed, multidisciplinary case studies from across the globe and through the course of a woman's life to show how science and advocacy can be creatively merged to enhance the agency and status of women. Accompanying short videos provide background about programs on the ground in India, the United States, Mexico, Nicaragua, Zimbabwe, and South Africa. Women's Empowerment and Global Health explores the promises and limits of programmatic, scientific, and rights-based work in real-world settings and provides the next generation of researchers and practitioners, as well as students in global and public health, sociology, anthropology, women's studies, law, business, and medicine, with cutting edge and inspirational examples of programs that point the way toward achieving women's equality and fulfilling the right to health."--Provided by publisher.

Book Indigenous African Popular Music Volume 2

Download or read book Indigenous African Popular Music Volume 2 written by Abiodun Salawu and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-06-14 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume examines how African indigenous popular music is deployed in democracy, politics and for social crusades by African artists. Exploring the role of indigenous African popular music in environmental health communication and gender empowerment, it subsequently focuses on how the music portrays the African future, its use by African youths, and how it is affected by advanced broadcast technologies and the digital media. Indigenous African popular music has long been under-appreciated in communication scholarship. However, understanding the nature and philosophies of indigenous African popular music reveals an untapped diversity which can only be unraveled by the knowledge of myriad cultural backgrounds from which its genres originate. With a particular focus on scholarship from Nigeria, Zimbabwe and South Africa, this volume explores how, during the colonial period and post-independence dispensation, indigenous African music genres and their artists were mainstreamed in order to tackle emerging issues, to sensitise Africans about the affairs of their respective nations and to warn African leaders who have failed and are failing African citizenry about the plight of the people. At the same time, indigenous African popular music genres have served as a beacon to the teeming African youths to express their dreams, frustrations about their environments and to represent themselves. This volume explores how, through the advent of new media technologies, indigenous African popular musicians have been working relentlessly for indigenous production, becoming champions of good governance, marginalised population, and repositories of indigenous cultural traditions and cosmologies.

Book Crime and Punishment around the World 4 volumes

Download or read book Crime and Punishment around the World 4 volumes written by Graeme R. Newman and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2010-10-19 with total page 1772 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive, detailed account explores crime and punishment throughout the world through the eyes of leading experts, local authors and scholars, and government officials. It is a subject as old as civil society, yet one that still fuels debate. Now the many and varied aspects of that subject are brought together in the four-volume Crime and Punishment around the World. This unprecedented work provides descriptions of crimes—and the justice systems that define and punish them—in more than 200 nations, principalities, and dependencies. Each chapter examines the historical, political, and cultural background, as well as the basic organization of the subject state's legal and criminal justice system. It also reports on the types and levels of crime, the processes leading to the finding of guilt, the rights of the accused, alternatives to going to trial, how suspects are prosecuted for their crimes, and the techniques and conditions of typical punishments employed. Comprising a study that is at once extraordinarily comprehensive and minutely detailed, the essays collected here showcase the variety and the universality of crime and punishment the world over.
