Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Musical Motley The following articles have all appeared in various newspapers and journals during the last few years. Here and there a trifling alteration has been made, or a date inserted to show that the article was written at a time when something that is now ancient history was either quite new or as yet unborn. Some apology is perhaps due for the liberal mixture of articles that are, in intention at any rate, gay, with articles that many readers will no doubt find excessively grave. But there are many quarters-of-an-hour at concerts during which even the most hardened critic must succumb to an attack of insomnia. In these moments of suffering he must either go mad and deal death all round him or see himself and his sad profession humorously. I have always preferred to try the latter remedy. The ex pression alters as strikingly as does a land scape when suddenly flooded with sun shine. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first complete English translation of the nineteenth-century Austrian innovator's evocative, elemental cycle of novellas. For Kafka he was “my fat brother”; Thomas Mann called him “one of the most peculiar, enigmatic, secretly audacious and strangely gripping storytellers in world literature.” Often misunderstood as an idyllic poet of “beetles and buttercups,” the nineteenth-century Austrian writer Adalbert Stifter can now be seen as a radical experimenter with narrative and a forerunner of nature writing’s darker currents. One of his best-known works, the novella cycle Motley Stones now appears in its first complete English translation, a rendition that respects the bracing strangeness of the original. In six thematically linked novellas, including the beloved classic “Rock Crystal,” human dramas play out amid the natural cycles of the Alps or the urban rhythms of Vienna—environments so keenly observed that they emerge as the tales’ most indomitable protagonists. Stifter’s human characters are equally haunting—children braving perils, eccentrics and loners harboring enigmatic torments. “We seek to glimpse the gentle law that guides the human race,” Stifter famously wrote. What he glimpsed, more often than not, was the abyss that lies behind the idyll. The tension between his humane sensitivity and his dark visions is what lends his writing its heartbreaking power.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Four Questions for the People, at the Presidential Election: Address of John Lothrop Motley, Before the Parker Fraternity, at the Music Hall, October 20, 1868 I have been invited to say something to-night on the great subject which is now agitating the country. It is certainly the duty of every good citizen to examine for himself the questions at issue, when a con ict like this is shaking. Half a continent, and is to be decided between the rising and setting of the sun, on a day rapidly approaching. And it seems equally his duty, after having thoroughly satisfied himself upon the merits of the great debate, to do what in him lies for the furtherance of that which be firmly believes the Right. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brings new insights to the music of well-known European composers by telling a fascinating, little-known story about French music publishing, specifically through the lens of Jacques Durand's Édition Classique. French composers, performers and musicologists acted as editors of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century European 'classics', primarily for piano. Among these editors were Fauré, Saint-Saëns, Debussy, Ravel and Dukas; the objects of their enquiries included core works by Rameau, Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Mendelssohn, Schumann and Chopin. Presenting six composer-editor case studies, the volume shows that the French 'accent', both musical and cultural, upon this predominantly Austro-German music was highly varied. Editorial responses range from scholarly approaches to those directed by performance or compositional agendas, and from pan-European to strongly patriotic stances. Intriguing intersections are revealed between old and new, and between French and cross-European canons. Beyond editing, the book explores the Édition's role in pedagogy and performance, including by pianists Robert Casadesus and Yvonne Loriod, and in the reassertion of contemporary French composition, especially regarding innovation around neoclassicism. It will interest a wide readership, including musicologists, performers and concert-goers, cultural historians and other humanities scholars.

Book Kickstart My Heart

Download or read book Kickstart My Heart written by Martin Popoff and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kickstart My Heart: A MÖtley CrÜe Day-by-Day is an exciting chronology that celebrates in innovative form - through the use of day-by-day entries and supporting band quotes mostly collected firsthand by the author, as well as memorabilia shots and photography - the crazy lives lived by Vince, Mick, Nikki, and Tommy at the booze-drenched apex of the rock-'n'-roll food chain. Augmented with entries that help place the band in a wider rock context, Popoff presents a swift-moving, action-packed symphony of text and visuals that reprises his collaboration with Backbeat on similarly structured titles about Iron Maiden and Ozzy Osbourne. With very few MÖtley CrÜe-related books on the market, Kickstart My Heart will likely serve for years to come as the most complete - and completely party-hardy - celebration of this band now 35 years on and in the midst of completing its final tour ever.
