Book excerpt: This multiple site case study of leadership and embedded professional development examines two districts that have created systems that are charged with developing teachers to better meet the needs of our children within the current landscape. The aim of this research is to answer the three research questions below in hopes of contributing to the field components of leadership and models that impact teacher instruction. The research for this multiple-site case study took place in two, three-to-five day site visits where interviews of the system leaders in both sites and instructional level staff were conducted. Also included were observations of professional development sessions and classroom instruction. The data gathered in each site was analyzed and findings from both sites were examined in a cross case synthesis to answer the questions below. The research questions that guided the research were: What role does a system leader play in embedded professional development? What are the factors that influence the implementation and sustainability of embedded professional development at the building level? What is the perceived impact of embedded professional development on teacher practice? In this multiple-site case study data was examined through three step triangulation process. Documents including professional development plans and outlines as well as state report cards and district websites were analyzed to highlight themes from each district. Second, interviews were conducted at the system and building level as well as the teacher level. The findings from the interview data were compared to the themes from district documents, yielding another set of iv common themes. These themes were utilized in the last step of the triangulation process during the walk-throughs of classrooms and professional development sessions. This process and the data from the triangulation process formed the basis for the key findings, recommendations, and conclusions. The key findings are summaries of findings from the cross case synthesis. The key findings provide the data for the recommendations and conclusion of this study. Research question one has five key findings. There are two key findings for research question two and four for research question three. The conclusions include the vital role of leadership, sustainability factors, and change in culture with regard to models of embedded professional development.

Firstly the chapters show that, either by accident or design, there is a growing cadre of teacher leaders emerging from a multitude of professional development activities and initiatives. Secondly, a number of new conceptual frameworks are put forward, alongside the adaption and development of extant ones that add to the ever-increasing theorisation of educational leadership and professional development literature. Thirdly, the chapters provide evidence of the connections between leadership and learning as conceptualised in the ‘Leadership for Learning’ framework. Book excerpt: Professional learning communities (PLCs) are a proven construct that enhances learning for both teachers and their students. This mixed-methods multiple-case study explored the relationship between teachers' and administrators' perceptions about professional learning communities and their attributes in four elementary schools in a suburban school district in New Jersey. Multiple data sources included the Professional Learning Community Assessment, principal interviews, teacher focus groups and archival documentation to address the following research questions: (1) What supportive conditions are necessary for professional learning communities to effectively support student and adult learning? (2) How does participation in professional learning communities influence collective learning and application? and (3) How has the leadership role of the principal changed with the implementation of professional learning communities? The findings from both the quantitative and qualitative data presented a comprehensive picture of educators' perceptions about the first year's implementation of professional learning communities in the areas of supportive and shared leadership, collective learning and application, and supportive relational and structural conditions. After analyzing the data of this action research, common themes emerged: focus on student learning, teacher job-embedded learning, collaboration, supportive conditions, collective capacity, results-oriented assessments for learning, and a systematic monitoring and response to each student's proficiency. Other significant conclusions for professional learning community implementation included: (1) collaborative cultures, based on trust and respect, develop over time and allow for risk taking in the learning process; (2) norm building is necessary for effective collaboration; (3) PLC time must be regularly embedded into the teachers' schedule to ensure collective inquiry and dialogue; (4) the principal provides instructional materials and resource staff to support shared practice and continuous learning; and (5) the principal shares information and collaborates on decision-making issues connected to student learning. This study demonstrated that the development of effective, sustainable professional learning communities is a process that develops over time with a principal providing the necessary supportive conditions to enhance levels of trust among all staff so they can work collectively to ensure both student and adult learning.

From the ‘Theory Movement’ of the 1950-1960s, through to Greenfield’s critique of logical empiricism in the 1970s, the emergence of Bates’ and Foster’s Critical Theory of educational administration in the 1980s, and Evers’ and Lakomski’s naturalistic coherentism from1990 to the present time, debates about ways of knowing, doing, and being in the social world have been central to advancing scholarship. However, since the publication of Evers’ and Lakomski’s work, questions of the epistemological preliminaries of research have become somewhat marginalised. This is not to suggest that such discussions are not taking place, but rather that they have been sporadic and piecemeal. In New Directions in Educational Leadership Theory, the contributors sketch possible alternatives for advancing scholarship in educational leadership. The coherence of this volume comes not from the adoption of a single theoretical lens, but rather from its engagement with epistemology, ontology, and methodology. The choice of the plural ‘alternatives’ is deliberate, and its use is to evoke the message that there is more than one way to advance knowledge.
