Book The Covid 19 Epidemic In China

Download or read book The Covid 19 Epidemic In China written by Lawrence Juen-yee Lau and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2020-08-19 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains an in-depth quantitative analysis of the development of the COVID-19 epidemic in China from its very beginning in December 2019 to early April 2020 when it was brought under control. It begins with adjustments of the official cumulative data on newly confirmed cases and deaths, removing any inconsistencies and smoothing the surges not attributable directly to the COVID-19 virus itself. It discusses the measures undertaken by the Chinese Government to control the epidemic. It examines the extent of the infection, the case mortality, and the costs to the Chinese economy in both Hubei, the province in which the first confirmed case was discovered, and the rest of the Mainland outside of Hubei. There is also an international comparison of the Chinese experience with those of other countries.

Book The Death Penalty as State Crime

Download or read book The Death Penalty as State Crime written by Laura L. Finley and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-03-27 with total page 135 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a new perspective on the death penalty in the US, examining capital punishment as state crime or state-produced harm. It addresses the death penalty, showing how the state not only authorizes a system and a practice that tortures human beings, but is also aware of its deep flaws and chooses not to address them. Building on the vast literature on state crime together with case examples and interviews with activists seeking to abolish the death penalty, this book offers a new and innovative critique of state punishment in the US. It draws on a range of issues and topics such as arbitrariness, inadequate counsel, racial bias, mental illness, innocence, conditions on death row, the protocols, and the equipment used for executions. It emphasizes the need for abolition of the death penalty and highlights efforts being made to do so, with a focus on successful elements of abolition campaigns. The Death Penalty as State Crime is essential reading for all those engaged with capital punishment, human rights, and state crime, and will be of interest to criminologists, sociologists, legal scholars and political scientists alike.

Book Viral Infections of Humans

Download or read book Viral Infections of Humans written by Richard A. Kaslow and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-09-27 with total page 1207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Striking changes have occurred in the world since the publication of the last edition of Viral Infections of Humans. The global population is rapidly approaching 8 billion; climate change is leading to the introduction of new hosts, vectors and virus diseases heretofore never seen in many parts of the world; technological advances have revolutionized the ability to recognize and characterize viruses new and old; vaccines are altering the epidemiological landscape of the diseases they target, in some cases raising the hope of their eradication and remarkably powerful computational tools are enabling not only detection of outbreaks of disease much sooner than in the past but also, through complex mathematical modeling, more accurate prediction of their potential impact. The new Fifth Edition of Viral Infections of Humans captures the both the excitement and frustration of the dynamic struggle between humankind and the viruses that continue to cause immense suffering. It presents the latest concepts, methods and technologies in epidemiology, detection, investigation, modeling and intervention. Updated and entirely new chapters by dozens of experts across the field provide analytic summaries of current knowledge of viruses and prions causing acute syndromes, chronic illnesses and/or malignancies. In sum, this ambitiously expanded volume offers a uniquely comprehensive perspective on viruses in humans, from agents of classic diseases (e.g., hepatitis, measles, polio, rabies and yellow fever), to those with greatest pandemic impact (e.g., influenza and human immunodeficiency virus), to those discovered relatively recently (e.g., henipavirus, metapneumovirus and norovirus). The new Fifth Edition of Viral Infections of Humans is an invaluable reference for students, fellows and established professionals in the fields of microbiology, public health and infectious disease epidemiology, medicine and health policy.

Book Cancer Control Opportunities in Low and Middle Income Countries

Download or read book Cancer Control Opportunities in Low and Middle Income Countries written by Institute of Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2007-01-26 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cancer is low or absent on the health agendas of low- and middle-income countries (LMCs) despite the fact that more people die from cancer in these countries than from AIDS and malaria combined. International health organizations, bilateral aid agencies, and major foundations—which are instrumental in setting health priorities—also have largely ignored cancer in these countries. This book identifies feasible, affordable steps for LMCs and their international partners to begin to reduce the cancer burden for current and future generations. Stemming the growth of cigarette smoking tops the list to prevent cancer and all the other major chronic diseases. Other priorities include infant vaccination against the hepatitis B virus to prevent liver cancers and vaccination to prevent cervical cancer. Developing and increasing capacity for cancer screening and treatment of highly curable cancers (including most childhood malignancies) can be accomplished using "resource-level appropriateness" as a guide. And there are ways to make inexpensive oral morphine available to ease the pain of the many who will still die from cancer.
