Book Youth Alcohol and Social Policy

Download or read book Youth Alcohol and Social Policy written by Howard T. Blane and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anxiety about "alcohol and youth" has been excited by shocking events and reports. Events are exemplified by multiple deaths of adolescents in automobile crashes after drinking parties. Reports are exemplified by the conclusion, from a national survey, that more than one fourth of youngsters aged 13 to 18 are already problem drinkers. Response provoked by these events and reports has taken the form of proposed or enacted legislation in several states to raise the so-called legal drinking age from 18 to 19, or 20, or 21. The confusion around the alcohol-and-youth problem is manifest in the fact that no one can be sure that raising the legal drinking age will make any difference. The legislation may be tilting at windmills; and it is doubtful even that the windmills exist. (But the legislative windmills are whirling.) The confusion is clearly manifest in the fact that the legal drinking-age legislation does not deal with a drinking age.

Book Prevention at Community Colleges Prevention Update

Download or read book Prevention at Community Colleges Prevention Update written by Higher Education Center for Alcohol, Drug Abuse, and Violence Prevention (ED). and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 2 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to "Community College Student Alcohol Use: Developing Context-Specific Evidence and Prevention Approaches," community colleges have traditionally had a threefold mission that includes preparing students for transfer to four-year colleges, developmental education, and workforce preparation. The researchers point out that the demographic characteristics of community colleges and their unique organizational context and culture are important factors when it comes to alcohol consumption and the reduction of associated harms. In addition, institutional student health and service capacity is significantly smaller at community colleges than at four-year institutions. Participants in a survey about student substance use, and infrastructure (staff and funding), programs, and collaborations dedicated to substance use prevention of 100 administrators, faculty, and health services staff at 100 community colleges reported a number of alcohol- and other drug-related concerns. Participating community colleges reported implementing a number of programs, although many are not implementing some of the programs popular at traditional four-year colleges, and collaborating with a number of on- and off-campus groups on substance abuse issues and services. According to the researchers, the findings of this survey indicate that administrators are quite concerned about student alcohol and other drug use and are developing programs despite limited staff and funding.

Book College Drinking

    Book Details:
  • Author : George W. Dowdall
  • Publisher : Taylor & Francis
  • Release : 2023-07-03
  • ISBN : 1000976386
  • Pages : 198 pages

Download or read book College Drinking written by George W. Dowdall and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-07-03 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drinking is recognized as one of the most important problems confronting students on campus today, with major impacts on health and safety. This book answers crucial questions about why students drink, examines its complex links to campus crime and sexual assault, and offers new insights on how to address the issue. It differs from other studies of college drinking by dispelling the myth that the problem is universal. Dowdall’s research reveals that the incidence of alcohol abuse varies enormously between colleges, and in doing so identifies interventions and policies that have been effective, and those that have failed. His study is also unique in looking “upstream” at the broader cultural, organizational and social forces that shape this behavior, where most studies focus only on “downstream” behaviors, well after students have selected their college and have started drinking. Students and parents can take action to lower the risk of binge drinking by following the book’s recommendations, and consulting the data it provides about alcohol violations and crime at thousands of colleges. For administrators and student affairs personnel, it both defines and illuminates the issue, and outlines effective interventions.
