Book Writing the Wind

Download or read book Writing the Wind written by Thomas Rain Crowe and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of contemporary Celtic language poets offers a first comprehensive look in English at poets from Wales, Brittany, Scotland, Ireland, Cornwall, and Isle of Man writing in Welsh, Breton, Scottish Gaelic, irish Gaelic, Cornish and Manx. In tone, these voices are as sensitive as they are subversive. They mirror the struggle and resiliency of a century of language activist-writers who have defied attempts at cultural genocide by the English and the French - and have continued to write and speak their languages. The result of that staying power is evidenced in a ground swell of literary activity during the last half of the 20th century in all six Celtic countries represented in this book. These are the "New Celts", the progency of hundreds of years of ancient cultural tradition, yet a modern as anything being written anywhere in the world. -- Publisher description.

Book Boudica s Odyssey in Early Modern England

Download or read book Boudica s Odyssey in Early Modern England written by Samantha Frénée-Hutchins and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-15 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This diachronic study of Boudica serves as a sourcebook of references to Boudica in the early modern period and gives an overview of the ways in which her story was processed and exploited by the different players of the times who wanted to give credence and support to their own belief systems. The author examines the different apparatus of state ideology which processed the social, religious and political representations of Boudica for public absorption and helped form the popular myth we have of Boudica today. By exploring images of the Briton warrior queen across two reigns which witnessed an act of political union and a move from English female rule (under Elizabeth I) to British/Scottish masculine rule (under James VI & I) the author conducts a critical cartography of the ways in which gender, colonialism and nationalism crystallised around this crucial historical figure. Concentrating on the original transmission and reception of the ancient texts the author analyses the historical works of Hector Boece, Raphael Holinshed and William Camden as well as the canonical literary figures of Edmund Spenser, William Shakespeare and John Fletcher. She also looks at aspects of other primary sources not covered in previous scholarship, such as Humphrey Llwyd’s Breuiary of Britayne (1573), Petruccio Ubaldini’s Le Vite delle donne illustri, del regno d’Inghilterra, e del regno di Scotia (1588) and Edmund Bolton’s Nero Caesar (1624). Furthermore, she incorporates archaeological research relating to Boudica.

Book excerpt: In The Valentines Germain Nouveau - still a relatively unknown contributor to modern French literature, but one considered by Andre Breton to have been a pioneer of surrealism - displays his originality by means of a form of intellectual pointillism, benign irony, a playful parody of Parnassian images, and frequent introduction of a shocking gros mot. This text examines the composition of the poems which marked the climax of Nouveau's literary life and explores it as an expression of the poet's joy in living and in loving an object worthy of existence. The volume includes both English and French renditions of Nouveau's poems.
