Book excerpt: Guyed towers are used for communication purposes and are frequently designed to heights of 300 meters (1000 feet). A guyed tower is a non-linear structure in which the mast, typically consisting of multiple truss members is supported laterally at several points by inclined guy cables. The guy cables are anchored to a foundation and are pre-tensioned. Wind induced vibrations may result in a fatigue failure of a guy anchor linkage or a cable, ultimately causing the collapse of an entire tower. In addition, excessive deflections or vibrations may interfere with communications and control systems resulting in serviceability failure. According to design standards, a basic understanding of the dynamic characteristics of guyed towers is important. This study develops an easy to use software package, aimed at practicing engineers, to determine free-vibration characteristics (natural frequencies and mode shapes) of guyed towers. The analysis presented herein employs the finite element method to determine the naturalfrequencies and mode shapes of guyed towers. The structural system is broken down into two main components, the tower mast and guy cables. Utilizing an equivalent beam-column analysis that take into consideration different lacing patterns, the mast is modelled as a beam-column with equivalent properties. A three-dimensional cable finite element following a catenary or parabolic profile is used to model guy cables. Several comparisons are made to ensure the accuracy of the cable element and the guyed tower model. Selected numerical results are presented for natural frequencies and mode shapes of a few representative towers. The influence of cable tension, lacing pattern of the mast and configuration of guy cables is also examined. The software package can be extended to include forced vibration response through the modal superposition method.

Book Response of Guyed Offshore Towers to Stochastic Loads in the Presence of Steady Current

Download or read book Response of Guyed Offshore Towers to Stochastic Loads in the Presence of Steady Current written by Sigurdur Brynjolfsson and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The validity of the widely used stochastic linearization method for analysing the response of guyed towers to stochastic loads is investigated. The governing equations of a guyed tower have two main sources of nonlinearities, fluid-structure interaction and the restoring force of the cables. In this study, two models are considered. First, a linearized single degree of freedom (SDOF) model of a guyed tower is developed using the stochastic linearization approach. It is solved in the frequency domain, giving the statistical response of the guyed tower to random waves and earthquake loading. The results are compared to the response statistics of a time simulation of a single degree of freedom system that fully incorporates the nonlinearities of the cable system and the fluid-structure interaction. Second, the dynamic response of a multiple degree of freedom (MDOF) model of a guyed offshore tower to stochastic earthquake loads and steady uniform current is investigated. The nonlinear cable stiffness and the fluid-structure interaction were again linearized using the stochastic linearization method. Numerical results for several load cases are presented and discussed. The displacement statistics from the MDOF linear analysis were compared to the statistics of the SDOF time simulation that fully incorporated the nonlinearities of the structure. The increased damping of the structure with increasing current was found to significantly reduce the stochastic forces and moments of the structure. The SDOF model is adequate for predicting statistics of displacements, but a MDOF model is needed to accurately predict statistics of maximum moments in the tower. It is found that the results from the linearized model agree reasonably well with the results from the time simulation of the fully nonlinear system. The computer time using the stochastic linearization approach is several order of magnitude less than for a conventional time simulation method. It is therefore justifiable to use this method in the early design stages of guyed towers.

Book excerpt: Several simple tower dynamic analysis methods and computer codes are described and evaluated in this report, by comparison with tower test results. The theory of these methods is first described. The Rayleigh and Rayleigh-Ritz methods, finite element method, and matrix iteration method are presented. Then, four different towers are described to show the correct data input for the methods. A comparison of results from each method to tower test results is given. Recommendations are made as to which methods give adequate results for various towers.

Book excerpt: Prepared by the Task Committee on the Dynamic Response of Lattice Towers of the Technical Committee on Special Structures and the Technical Administrative Committee on Metals of the Structural Engineering Institute of ASCE. This report is a compilation and clarification of current methodologies for the dynamic response of communication towers in a single source. The information regarding the dynamic response of lattice towers is currently scattered throughout the literature, making it difficult for the practicing engineer to obtain the information necessary for design purposes. Both self-supporting lattice towers and guyed lattice masts (guyed lattice towers) are included. Topics include: Ødynamics of cables and towers, Ødynamic analysis, Øwind loads and response, Øseismic input and response, and Øvibration control.

Book Nonlinear Finite Element Modeling and Characterization of Guyed Towers Under Severe Loading

Download or read book Nonlinear Finite Element Modeling and Characterization of Guyed Towers Under Severe Loading written by Haijian Shi and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Guyed towers have been widely employed in the telecommunication industry. This study thus intends to improve the understanding and analysis of guyed towers that undergoes not only large deformation, but also large strain. Impulsive loads are potential threat to the safety of guyed towers besides wind load, earthquake, and ice storm. This research explores the area using an already developed P-I diagram method and nonlinear finite element modeling to provide an efficient and effective way for structural integrity evaluation for guyed towers. The mechanical characteristics of basic components of guyed towers are investigated first. Because guyed towers with large defection also have large strain in some parts, material nonlinearity is introduced by improving the existing FEM codes for trusses and cables. It is found that the improved methodology can well predict the performance of structures and tremendous difference exists between elastic analysis and inelastic analysis. Under seismic loading condition, inelasticity in material can help dissipate the inputted seismic energy and reduce the intensity of structural response. To evaluate the guyed tower's safety under impulsive loads, relative P-I formulas have been derived based on existing transverse velocity profiles of rigid plastic beams under impulsive loads. The impact of boundary condition and load types on the response is investigated. It is found under certain conditions only one failure mode is possible. But shear failure and bending failure can coexist under very severe impulsive loads. Most guyed towers are expected to survive light or medium impulsive loads due to their high redundancy and small loading area.

Book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1 957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 36 (thesis year 1991) a total of 11,024 thesis titles from 23 Canadian and 161 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 36 reports theses submitted in 1991, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.
