Book Nursing Student Self efficacy Beliefs During Clinical Placement

Download or read book Nursing Student Self efficacy Beliefs During Clinical Placement written by Leslie Jane Grightmire and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Health care changes and our ageing population mean an increasing shortage of nurses, which elevates the importance of understanding how preservice nursing programs contribute to nursing outcomes. This study combined Benner's (2001) taxonomy of nursing domains with Bandura's (1997) social cognition theory. Self-efficacy Beliefs (SE) are task specific and based on a self-assessment of your task performance, comparison of your ability to that of others, verbal persuasion by others of your ability, and physiological and affective mood states (Bandura, 1997). Self-efficacy is an important outcome of nursing education because nurses with high SE set appropriate goals, try different strategies, persevere to complete a task, and will make an easier transition from student to nursing professional. This mixed methods thesis focused on the nurse candidates SE experiences during a seven week hospital clinical rotation accompanied by a clinical teacher. The research questions were: (1) What are the SE beliefs of nurse candidates during clinical practice? (2) How do the four sources from Bandura (1997) contribute to the SE beliefs of nursing students during their clinical placement? (3) What is the relative importance to the SE beliefs of nursing candidates of their interaction with clinical teachers? (4) Are there differences between semester 2 and semester 4 students in the SE effects of their clinical practice?Student participants completed two questionnaires about SE beliefs and the clinical teaching behaviors survey. Clinical teachers also completed the clinical teaching behaviors survey. Qualitative analysis of transcripts and the quantitative statistical package SPSS were used to answer the research questions. There were rapid changes in SE during the clinical experience. Clinical teachers were the key to building, or diminishing, SE beliefs. Semester two students had increases in SE beliefs during the rotation while the majority of semester four students experienced a decrease. There were statistically significant differences between the semesters on three of Benner's (2001) domains. Quantitative and qualitative findings reflected these same findings. There were suggestions for nursing education and clinical practice to increase SE beliefs in this complex learning environment.

This book explores the concept of self efficacy from theory, research, measurement, and practice perspectives. The core of the book is an international collaboration of nurses from the U.S. and the Netherlands who have developed tools for promoting and measuring self efficacy in diabetes management.

Book Baccalaureate Nursing Students Perceptions of Clinical Judegment and Self efficacy Following High fidelity Simulation

Download or read book Baccalaureate Nursing Students Perceptions of Clinical Judegment and Self efficacy Following High fidelity Simulation written by Vicki Carol Pierce and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nurse education literature reflects that educators face a problem of how to provide meaningful clinical learning experiences that help undergraduate nursing students develop clinical judgment and increase self-efficacy. Many schools of nursing are incorporating high-fidelity simulation as an alternative clinical teaching strategy, yet there is little quantitative evidence to support the effectiveness of this teaching method in undergraduate nursing education, particularly regarding the development of clinical judgment. The purpose of this quasi-experimental time series design study was to explore the effectiveness of using multiple high-fidelity simulation experiences to increase perceptions of clinical judgment and self-efficacy in baccalaureate nursing students. Self-report data was collected following three different high-fidelity simulation experiences at three points in time. Data analysis revealed a statistically significant increase (p = .041) in students' perceptions of clinical judgment occurred between Time 1 and Time 3. Students' perceptions of self-efficacy also increased significantly from Time 1 to Time 3 (p = .003) and Time 2 to Time 3(p = .001). Regression analysis revealed a slight positive correlation (sig. = .003) between students' perceptions of self-efficacy and clinical judgment.

Book Academic Self efficacy in Mexican American Community College Students

Download or read book Academic Self efficacy in Mexican American Community College Students written by and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate the academic self-efficacy beliefs of Mexican-American community college student. The study used a mixed-methods approach to assess academic self-efficacy beliefs, to determine the congruence of academic self-efficacy to academic skills, and to identify the types of experiences that shaped academic self-efficacy beliefs. The sample consisted of 428 Mexican-American students from a southern California community college. Academic self-efficacy beliefs were measured using the SELF-A and analyzed across a number of demographic variables. Congruence of academic self-efficacy beliefs to academic skill was determined by comparing scores on the SELF-A to self-reported academic outcomes. The sources of academic self-efficacy beliefs were explored through data obtained via additional survey items and through interviews conducted with 16 students from the original sample. Findings indicated that positive academic self-efficacy beliefs existed among the sample. Findings were mixed with regard to the level of congruence between academic self-efficacy beliefs and academic skill. The four sources of academic self-efficacy identified in past research applied to the academic self-efficacy beliefs of the students in the sample, but in ways that differed from what past research had suggested with other student populations. Additional sources of academic self-efficacy that were equally influential were identified. Given the poorer academic outcomes of Mexican-American community college students compared to other student populations, the findings of the study were used to propose cost-effective practices and programs intended to improve the academic outcomes of this group.

Book The Effects of Simulation on Junior Level Baccalaureate Nursing Students Self efficacy and Intrinsic Motivation

Download or read book The Effects of Simulation on Junior Level Baccalaureate Nursing Students Self efficacy and Intrinsic Motivation written by Michelle E. Dykes and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author's abstract: Nursing education is experiencing a generational phenomenon with student enrollment spanning three generations. Classrooms cultures are changing today and include some Baby Boomers and large numbers of Generation X, Generation Y, and second-degree seeking students. These culturally diverse groups of students have unique sets of learning characteristics. Given the current challenges of growing student diversity, balancing budgets, and meeting faculty shortages, nursing schools are pressed to find alternative teaching methods that are not only cost and labor saving but also effective and equitable for the diverse student groups. This quantitative, experimental research design study explored the effects of the alternative teaching methods of human patient simulation (HPS) and virtual clinical excursion (VCE) on self-efficacy and intrinsic motivation of 126 culturally diverse junior level nursing students. The purpose of this study was to determine if these simulation activities were motivationally effective and equitable teaching methods for students of culturally diverse generation and degree. The Intrinsic Motivation Inventory (IMI) group mean score of the HPS group revealed significantly higher IMI scores than the VCE group. While many HPS subscale scores were higher, VCE scores were still on the higher end of the Lickert scale. The results did not consistently confirm that any one particular cultural demographic group benefitted more or less from either HPS or VCE experience. None of the main effects were significant for any of the general self-efficacy change scores. Only one interaction was significant: simulation type/degree status for the GSE score with midlevel degree type HPS students experiencing a largely higher mean gain in GSE between the first two assessments than those in the VCE experience. Culturally competent educators may use the findings of this study to begin a dialogue regarding appropriate simulation activities for the changing culture of nursing students. Results of this study indicated that, while overall IMI scores were higher for HPS than for VCE, both types of simulation were motivationally appropriate and effective teaching methods for all types of students, regardless of cultural demographic factors. In addition, GSE scores remained relatively constant, indicating that both types of simulation were appropriate and effective for all groups in this study.
