Book Principles and Standards for the Disposal of Long lived Radioactive Wastes

Download or read book Principles and Standards for the Disposal of Long lived Radioactive Wastes written by N. Chapman and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2003-10-07 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook is concerned with developing principles and standards for the safe disposal of solid radioactive wastes by burial deep in the Earth's crust. Radioactive wastes have focussed thinking on long-term environmental protection issues in an unprecedented way. Consequently, the way in which principles and standards are set, and the thinking behind this, is of wider interest than to the nuclear field alone. The issues are not just technical and scientific. There is also a much wider philosophical context to the debate, centering on ethics, human values and the expectations of society. In this handbook it is intended that all theses issues are brought together, suggesting appropriate ways forward in each area, culminating in a proposed structure for safety regulations. It also aims to provide a detailed discussion of some of the most difficult logical an ethical issues facing those wishing to dispose of long-lived radioactive wastes.

Book Numerical Modelling of Discrete Materials in Geotechnical Engineering Civil Engineering and Earth Sciences

Download or read book Numerical Modelling of Discrete Materials in Geotechnical Engineering Civil Engineering and Earth Sciences written by Heinz Konietzky and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2004-11-23 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this fully up-to-date volume, important new developments and applications of discrete element modelling are highlighted and brought together for presentation at the First International UDEC/3DEC Symposium. Papers covered the following key areas: * behaviour of masonry structures (walls, bridges, towers, columns) * stability and deformation of tunnels and caverns in fractured rock masses * geomechanical modelling for mining and waste repositories * rock reinforcement design (anchors, shotcrete, bolts) * mechanical and hydro-mechanical behaviour of dams and foundations * rock slope stability, deformation and failure mechanisms * modelling of fundamental rock mechanical problems * modelling of geological processes * constitutive laws for fractured rock masses and masonry structures * dynamic behaviour of discrete structures. Numerical Modelling of Discrete Materials in Geotechnical Engineering, Civil Engineering, and Earth Sciences provides an ultra-modern, in-depth analysis of discrete element modelling in a range of different fields, thus proving valuable reading for civil, mining, and geotechnical engineers, as well as other interested professionals.

Book Earthquake Soil Interaction

Download or read book Earthquake Soil Interaction written by S. Syngellakis and published by WIT Press. This book was released on 2014-09-29 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comprises a selection of articles on interactions between earthquakes and the soil in which they propagate. The book is concerned with soil composition and geomechanical features, which affect earthquake propagation and intensity; it also addresses detrimental effects of seismic shaking on soil properties and stability. Modelling is applied to investigate the effects of cracks and various types of soil damping on seismic waves. Elastic, poroelastic, elasto-plastic, constitutive models are adopted in conjunction with rigorous mathematical techniques or approximate methods such as boundary elements or finite differences. A substantial part of this volume is dedicated to soil liquefaction, an important consequent of seismic shaking that results in substantial loss of soil strength and stiffness. Criteria are proposed for assessing the liquefaction potential of a site. Data collected from soil samples, either in the laboratory or in-situ, are analysed to provide values for the critical parameters on which liquefaction depends. The occurrence of landslides is addressed by assessing slope stability through a systematic geophysical and geotechnical characterisation of the soil mass followed by finite element modelling. The bearing capacity of the soil is directly obtained by laboratory testing of soil samples, as well as from reliable empirical relations generated by combining such test data with in-situ measurements of soil dynamic properties.
