Book Cognitive Aspects of Stimulus Control

Download or read book Cognitive Aspects of Stimulus Control written by W. K. Honig and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2018-10-24 with total page 419 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of discrimination and generalization in animals traditionally involves stimuli that are simple, uniform, and restricted in time or space. In recent years, the area of stimulus control has been expanded with the use of stimuli that are complex, extended in time or space, and incorporate or represent natural objects, events, or locations. The contributors to this unique volume have emphasized controlling functions of complex stimulus events -- such as location or duration -- and their relation to cognitive processes in animals. The chapters cover a wide array of topics, including spatial cognition, categorization, pattern perception, numerosity discriminations, imagery, and spatial tracking, thereby addressing the question of how complex events are perceived, processed, and organized. This volume goes beyond other recent books on animal cognition in that it specifically places some well-known phenomena within the context of stimulus control.

Book Contingencies of Reinforcement

Download or read book Contingencies of Reinforcement written by B. F. Skinner and published by B. F. Skinner Foundation. This book was released on 2014-07-01 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: B. F. Skinner titled this book, Contingencies of Reinforcement, after the heart of his science of behavior. Contingencies relate classes of actions to postcedent events and to the contexts in which those action-postcedent relations occur. The basic processes seem straightforward, but many people do not know or understand the underlying theory. Skinner believed that ‘a theory is essential to the scientific understanding of behavior as a subject matter”. This book presents some of Skinner’s most sophisticated statements about theoretical issues. To his original articles, he added notes to clarify and expand subtle points. The book thus provides an overview of Skinner’s thinking about theory and the philosophy underpinning the science he began.

Book Behavior Analysis

Download or read book Behavior Analysis written by Henry S. Roane and published by Guilford Publications. This book was released on 2024-01-10 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first comprehensive volume to bridge the gap between the science of behavior and applied behavior analysis (ABA). The book demonstrates how laboratory research informs real-world interventions to facilitate behavior change, and vice versa. Most of the chapters are written by researcher–clinician collaborators, who highlight commonalities and differences in the ways they conceptualize behavior and collect, analyze, and use data. Chapters present translational perspectives on conditioning, reinforcement, extinction, choice, verbal behavior, and more. Ethical considerations in translational research are explored. Training in foundational knowledge is a key requirement for behavior analyst certification, making this a needed resource for current and future ABA practitioners.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing at an ever-increasing pace for over a century, the solid body of concepts and facts that constitute the science of learning demand a comprehensive, systematic introduction. Completely up-to-date and written in a direct, easy-to-read style that is suitable for undergraduates, The Science of Learning is such an introduction. Because its focus is on what is known rather than what is speculated, this book differs from other learning texts by not dwelling on which theories are or are not in vogue. The text's comprehensive coverage makes it an ideal reference for more advanced scholars and specialists in learning and related fields.

Book Visual Psychophysics

    Book Details:
  • Author : Zhong-Lin Lu
  • Publisher : MIT Press
  • Release : 2013-10-11

Download or read book Visual Psychophysics written by Zhong-Lin Lu and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2013-10-11 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive treatment of the skills and techniques needed for visual psychophysics, from basic tools to sophisticated data analysis. Vision is one of the most active areas in biomedical research, and visual psychophysical techniques are a foundational methodology for this research enterprise. Visual psychophysics, which studies the relationship between the physical world and human behavior, is a classical field of study that has widespread applications in modern vision science. Bridging the gap between theory and practice, this textbook provides a comprehensive treatment of visual psychophysics, teaching not only basic techniques but also sophisticated data analysis methodologies and theoretical approaches. It begins with practical information about setting up a vision lab and goes on to discuss the creation, manipulation, and display of visual images; timing and integration of displays with measurements of brain activities and other relevant techniques; experimental designs; estimation of behavioral functions; and examples of psychophysics in applied and clinical settings. The book's treatment of experimental designs presents the most commonly used psychophysical paradigms, theory-driven psychophysical experiments, and the analysis of these procedures in a signal-detection theory framework. The book discusses the theoretical underpinnings of data analysis and scientific interpretation, presenting data analysis techniques that include model fitting, model comparison, and a general framework for optimized adaptive testing methods. It includes many sample programs in Matlab with functions from Psychtoolbox, a free toolbox for real-time experimental control. Once students and researchers have mastered the material in this book, they will have the skills to apply visual psychophysics to cutting-edge vision science.

Book Advances in Behavioral Pharmacology

Download or read book Advances in Behavioral Pharmacology written by Travis Thompson and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in Behavioral Pharmacology, Volume 1 provides synthetic and analytic reviews of significant areas of behavioral pharmacology, particularly the behavioral mechanisms of drug action. The book presents papers on the behavioral pharmacology of the tetrahydrocannabinols; on infrahuman ethanol self-administration; and on the discriminative stimulus properties of drugs. The text then describes various methods used to study the effects of drugs on discrimination; signal detection (SDT), which attempts to separate effects of variables on discrimination processes or capacity (sensitivity) from effects on the subject's criterion; and some of the uses of this model in behavioral pharmacology. The rate-dependency of the behavioral effects of amphetamine, as well as some of the major events in the history of behavioral pharmacology are also considered. The book concludes by tackling the status of behavioral pharmacology. Behavioral pharmacologists, pharmacologists, physicians, and students taking pharmacology and medicine will find the book useful.

Book Visual Mismatch Negativity vMMN a Prediction Error Signal in the Visual Modality

Download or read book Visual Mismatch Negativity vMMN a Prediction Error Signal in the Visual Modality written by Gabor Stefanics and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2015-06-04 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current theories of visual change detection emphasize the importance of conscious attention to detect unexpected changes in the visual environment. However, an increasing body of studies shows that the human brain is capable of detecting even small visual changes, especially if such changes violate non-conscious probabilistic expectations based on repeating experiences. In other words, our brain automatically represents statistical regularities of our visual environmental. Since the discovery of the auditory mismatch negativity (MMN) event-related potential (ERP) component, the majority of research in the field has focused on auditory deviance detection. Such automatic change detection mechanisms operate in the visual modality too, as indicated by the visual mismatch negativity (vMMN) brain potential to rare changes. VMMN is typically elicited by stimuli with infrequent (deviant) features embedded in a stream of frequent (standard) stimuli, outside the focus of attention. In this research topic we aim to present vMMN as a prediction error signal. Predictive coding theories account for phenomena such as mismatch negativity and repetition suppression, and place them in a broader context of a general theory of cortical responses. A wide range of vMMN studies has been presented in this Research Topic. Twelve articles address roughly four general sub-themes including attention, language, face processing, and psychiatric disorders. Additionally, four articles focused on particular subjects such as the oblique effect, object formation, and development and time-frequency analysis of vMMN. Furthermore, a review paper presented vMMN in a hierarchical predictive coding framework. Each paper in this Research Topic is a valuable contribution to the field of automatic visual change detection and deepens our understanding of the short term plasticity underlying predictive processes of visual perceptual learning.
