A mente comum é como um animal burro e movido, enquanto a Mente Mestre é como o homem forte, inteligente, mestre. O homem comum é muito escravo de seus pensamentos e sentimentos. Uma corrente de pensamentos e sentimentos flui através dele, movendo-o aqui e ali com pouca ou nenhuma escolha voluntária de sua parte. Mesmo aqueles homens que atingiram um certo grau de domínio mental dirigem seu barco mental com o leme de uma vontade vacilante: eles não percebem que o domínio é possível para eles. Até mesmo um bom escritor de notas disse: "Nós não criamos voluntariamente nosso pensamento. Isso se dá em nós. Somos destinatários mais ou menos passivos. Não podemos mudar a natureza de um pensamento; mas podemos, por assim dizer, pilotar o navio movendo o leme". Seria mais verdadeiro dizer que podemos, deliberada e voluntariamente, selecionar e escolher o vento particular que impulsiona nosso barco mental para a frente, ou, mudando a figura, selecionar e escolher o fluxo particular de pensamento e sentimento que será permitido fluir através de nossa mente.

At the same time, ageing has become a specialisation in many disciplines - medicine, sociology, psychology, to name but three – and a discipline of its own: gerontology. This book questions the framing of old age by focusing on the relationships between policy making and the production of knowledge. The first part explores how the meeting of scientific expertise and the politics of old age anchors the construction of both individual and collective relationships to the future. Part II brings to light the many ways in which issues relating to ageing can be instrumentalised and ideologised in several public debate arenas.
