Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memorial Discourse on the Character of Abraham Lincoln, President of the United States: Delivered at Hollis, on the Day of the National Fast, June 1, 1865 WE are here to-day, my friends, at the request of the highest authority of our land, to unite with the great mass of our countrymen in the memorial services of our late lamented and endeared President. The mysterious events of a Wise Providence have taken from us the second Father of our Country, and a bereaved nation mourns. A cruel and ruthless hand has smitten him down, and bathed us all in tears. We have come to mingle our sorrows; to dwell upon his virtues, and to learn such lessons as his untimely death is calculated to teach. Never, since time began, has the departure of one man filled so many hearts With sadness, and never have so many gathered, on one occasion of mourning, as will be gathered this day. The cruel manner of our President's death; the critical period of public affairs in which he fell; the loss of so much experience, talent, and honest purpose, and the sundering of so many cords of personal love, all conspire to make the event one of the most mournful interest. All civilized nations tender us their sympathy, and unite with us in sorrowing over our sad bereavement. Thirty millions of hearts have been pierced by one foul blow of the assassin. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eulogy on Abraham Lincoln: Late President of the United States, Pronounced at the City Hall, Springfield, Mass;, April 19, 1865 Therefore, without trying to tell how much we loved him, how much we honored him, and how deeply and tenderly We mourn his loss, let us briefly trace the reasons why his death has made so deep an impression upon us. It is not five years since the nation knew but little of Abraham Lin coln. We had heard of him as a man much honored by the members of a single party - not then dominant - in his own state. We had seen something Of his work; We knew that he was held to be a man of notable 'and peculiar power, and of pure character and life. Indeed, it is doubt ful whether the nation knew enough Of him to justify the selection made by the convention which presented him to the country as a candidate. For its highest office. To this office, however, he was triumphantly elected, and since that time his life has run like a thread of gold through the history of the most remarkable period Of the nation's ex istence. Book A Discourse Commemorative of the Life and Character of Abraham Lincoln

Download or read book A Discourse Commemorative of the Life and Character of Abraham Lincoln written by T. E. Bliss and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Discourse, Commemorative of the Life and Character of Abraham Lincoln: Late President of the United States, Delivered April 23, 1865 Zech 12.-12 - "And the land shall mourn - every family apart." This language of the ancient prophet of God finds to-day a striking and impressive fulfillment. On every hand the emblems of mourning are seen, and the great heart of the nation seems to beat heavily as if burdened with its mighty sorrow. Our public thoroughfares and edifices are shrouded in gloom. The busy marts of trade are stilled with the silence of death, and all things betoken a nation's profoundest grief. Our flag - the loved symbol of our nationality - dearer far than ever before, because of the sacred affections of the thousands of faithful hearts that arc entwined around it, and have bled and died to shield it from stain or dishonor - this too is draped in the habiliments of mourning, and is lowered to but half its wonted height in token of our universal woe. The booming cannon - the tolling bells - the funeral dirges - the slowly moving processions, with reversed arms and muffled drums - the sad and downcast expression, the tearful eye, as friend meets friend - all indicate that this is no empty pageant, but that patriot hearts are bowed down with a sense of some great public calamity. But why is this, when so recently these hearts were bounding with joy and gladness in view of the many and splendid victories achieved, and the bright prospects of returning peace? Gentlemen: When on Monday, the 17th inst., you requested me to pronounce a eulogy of the late President of the United States, upon the 17th inst., the shortness of time and the great depression of feeling consequent upon the awful intelligence of his death, then just received, forcibly impressed me with the great embarrassment under which I should undertake the task. If the sentiments by me expressed upon that occasion are in sympathy with the feelings of the community, as 1 trust they are, I shall cheerfully furnish you with a copy of the same for publication, trusting the circumstance under which they were produced will be considered some apology for their imperfect presentation.
