Download or read book The Long Peace written by Engin Akarli and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1993-07-16 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long notorious as one of the most turbulent areas of the world, Lebanon nevertheless experienced an interlude of peace between its civil war of 1860 and the beginning of the French Mandate in 1920. Engin Akarli examines the sociopolitical changes resulting from the negotiations and shifting alliances characteristic of these crucial years. Using previously unexamined documents in Ottoman archives, Akarli challenges the prevailing view that attributes modernization in government to Western initiative while blaming stagnation on reactionary local forces. Instead, he argues, indigenous Lebanese experience in self-rule as well as reconciliation among different religious groups after 1860 laid the foundation for secular democracy. European intervention in Lebanese politics, however, hampered efforts to develop a correspondingly secular notion of Lebanese nationality. As ethnic and religious strife increases throughout much of eastern Europe and the Middle East, the Lebanese example has obvious relevance for our own time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FASTR is what you get when a Silicon Valley product designer uses design thinking to successfully resolve a persistent and pernicious anal fissure. As I discovered, a chronic fissure (sometimes called an anal ulcer, anal lesion, or anal tear) can disrupt pretty much everything in life, robbing you of joy, peace, and productivity. If this condition is affecting you or a loved one, you’re likely seeking a fast and lasting solution. Those were my goals, so I developed a protocol that worked for me. FASTR (Fissure-in-Ano Self-Treatment and Repair) consolidates key data, personal experience, a little discretion, and plenty of empathy in a way that can save you time and reduce suffering. I hope that sharing it as a pattern can help you build your own effective protocol.

Book Notable Czech and Slovak Americans

Download or read book Notable Czech and Slovak Americans written by Miloslav Rechcigl Jr. and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2021-12-14 with total page 1598 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The contribution to the development and culture of America by the immigrants from the territory of former Czechoslovakia, be they Czechs or Slovaks, or Bohemians, as they used to be called, has been enormous. Yet little has been written about the subject. This compendium is part of an effort to correct this glaring deficiency. In this compendium, the focus is on religion, law and jurisprudence, business and entrepreneurship and the notable people in the government, with the narration and assessment about the Czechoslovak American explorers, adventurers and pioneers who paved the way for the colonists and settlers who followed them. An important role among them played the social movement activists. some of whose ideas won the respect and ultimately acceptance by general population, to which subject an entire section has been devoted. Among other, you will find among them abolitionists, freethinkers. suffragists, civil & human rights activists, environmentalists and conservationists, climate change activists, philanthropists, inventors and even futurists or futurologists. Their innovative ideas, inevitably, led to the rise of the plethora of Czech and Slovak American leaders, encompassing, practically, every aspect of human endeavor. As stated in the Foreword, this reference will serve as a powerful research tool for many years to come for scholars and all Czechs and Slovaks on both sides of the Atlantic.
