Book Assessment of Bond Between Asphalt Layers

Download or read book Assessment of Bond Between Asphalt Layers written by Sutanto Muslich and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asphalt pavements are usually constructed in several layers and most of pavement design and evaluation techniques assume that adjacent asphalt layers are fully bonded together and no displacement is developed between them. However, full bonding is not always achieved and a number of pavement failures have been linked to poor bond condition Theoretical research showed that the distribution of stresses, strains and deflections within the pavement structure is highly influenced by the bond condition between the adjacent layers. Slippage at the interface between the binder course and the base could significantly reduce the life of the overall pavement structure. If slippage occurs within the interface between the surfacing and the binder course, the maximum horizontal tensile strain at the bottom of the surfacing becomes excessive and causing the rapid surfacing failure. This condition becomes worse when a significant horizontal load exists. This thesis is concerned with the assessment of bond between asphalt layers. The main objective of this thesis is to provide guidance for assessing bond between asphalt layers, in order to facilitate the construction of roads with more assurance of achieving the design requirements. Further modification to the modified Leutner test has been performed. An investigation regarding the torque bond test and the effect of trafficking on bond have also been undertaken. A bond database on the modified Leutner test has been developed. An analysis has been performed to estimate the achievable values of bond strengths on typical UK road constructions obtained from the bond database. The values were then compared to the results from an analytical analysis to predict the required bond strength at the interface and other standards in Germany and Switzerland to recommend specification limits of bond strength for UK roads.

Book Moisture Damage in Asphalt Concrete

Download or read book Moisture Damage in Asphalt Concrete written by Russell G. Hicks and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 1991 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to pavement designers, construction engineers, maintenance engineers, and others interested in avoiding or limiting moisture damage in asphalt concrete. Information is provided on physical and chemical explanations for moisture damage in asphalt concrete, along with a discussion of current practices and test methods for determining or reducing the susceptibility of various asphalt concrete components and mixtures to such damage. Moisture damage in asphalt concrete is a nationwide problem which often necessitates premature replacement of highway pavement surfaces. This report of the Transportation Research Board describes the underlying physical and chemical phenomena responsible for such damage. Current test methods used to determine the susceptibility of asphalt concretes, or their constituents, to moisture damage are described and evaluated. Additionally, current practices for minimizing the potential for moisture damage are examined.

Book AASHTO Transportation Glossary

Download or read book AASHTO Transportation Glossary written by and published by AASHTO. This book was released on 2009 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The 2009 AASHTO Transportation Glossary is an update and revision of the 1983 Transportation Glossary and the 1998 Transportation Glossary, which was unpublished. The largest additions in terminology were in bridge and drainage subjects. The new Glossary also includes lists of organizational acronyms, abbreviations, and other glossary references. Terms and definitions in this glossary were taken from an unpublished 1998 AASHTO Glossary and supplemented with definitions listed in AASHTO publications issued after 1998. Several additional sources were also referenced, including the Highway Capacity Manual, Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, Code of Federal Regulations-Title 23, an FHWA list of roundabout terminology, and the Transportation Research Thesaurus. Glossary terms are listed in alphabetical order regardless of transportation mode. However, the glossary also includes two indexes-subject area and keyword-which provide cross references for the user."--AASHTO Bookstore website (viewed June 24, 2.

Book Application of LADAR in the Analysis of Aggregate Characteristics

Download or read book Application of LADAR in the Analysis of Aggregate Characteristics written by Linbing Wang and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2012 with total page 97 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "NCHRP Project 4-34, 'Application of LADAR in the Analysis of Aggregate Characteristics,' was conducted by Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Blacksburg, Virginia, with participation by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The objective of the project was to develop and evaluate a laser detection and ranging (LADAR) system capable of precise and accurate measurement of the aggregate characteristics of shape, volume, angularity, surface texture, specific surface area, and volumetric gradation. Ideally, the final system would be applicable to aggregate in three size categories--coarse (2 in. to #4), fine (#4 to #200), and microfine (P200)--and suitable for routine use in research, central, and field laboratories for Portland cement concrete and asphalt concrete mixture design and quality assurance. The project, which developed new equipment and computer algorithms, proved technically challenging. The project team developed a prototype Fourier transform interferometry (FTI) system with fully functional hardware and software. The system can characterize aggregate shape, angularity, texture, surface area, and volume of a wide range of aggregate sizes with high accuracy. Assembly and operation of the FTI system consisting of a chargecoupled device (CD) camera, a fringe source, a sample platform, and a software package are fully documented in the report. The accuracy and precision of the prototype FTI system are comparable to or better than those of other systems now available to automatically measure aggregate characteristics, but its current range of aggregate size--3/4 in. to #50--is narrower than desired. Extending this size range is possible in the future by using a CCD camera with a larger field of view and increasing the system resolution through appropriate selection of the equipment components."

Book Measurements of Surface Energy and Its Relationship to Moisture Damage

Download or read book Measurements of Surface Energy and Its Relationship to Moisture Damage written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Moisture damage in asphalt mixes can be defined as loss of strength and durability due to the presence of moisture at the binder-aggregate interface (adhesive failure) or within the binder (cohesive failure). This research focuses on the evaluation of the susceptibility of aggregates and asphalts to moisture damage through understanding the micro-mechanisms that influence adhesive bond between aggregates and asphalt and the cohesive strength and durability of the binder. Moisture damage susceptibility is assessed using surface energy measurements and Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA). Surface energy is defined as the energy needed to create a new unit surface area of material in vacuum condition. Surface energy measurements are used to compute the adhesive bond strength between the aggregates and asphalt and cohesive bond strength in the binder. DMA testing evaluates the rate of damage accumulation in asphalt binders and mastics. The DMA apparatus applies a cyclic, torsional strain-controlled loading to cylindrical asphalt mastics until failure. DMA results are analyzed using continuum damage mechanics that focus on separating the energy expended in damaging the material from that associated with viscoelastic deformation. This report presents a new approach developed to analyze DMA results and calculate the rate of damage. The developed approach is used to evaluate six asphalt mixtures that have performed either well or poorly in the field. The resistance of the field mixes to moisture damage is shown to be related to the calculations of bind energies and the accumulated damage in DMA.
