Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: BY THE AUTHOR OF A MAVERICK NEW ZEALAND WAY, FINALIST IN THE TRAVEL CATEGORY, INTERNATIONAL BOOK AWARDS, MAY 2018. If you've heard of famous Himalayan peaks like Annapurna and Ama Dablam, but aren't into mountaineering, this book is for you! A Maverick Himalayan Way is about the Himalayas, but it isn't a hardcore mountaineering book. Instead, Mary Jane recounts her adventures and misadventures as an average sort of a person who happens to travel into the world's most famous mountain region; and to several other places in Asia as well. Like most Kiwis, Mary Jane was raised on tales of the New Zealander Edmund Hillary's climbing of Mount Everest alongside the Nepalese Sherpa Tenzing Norgay, and of Hillary's good works among the impoverished Sherpa thereafter. But she never felt the urge to go to the Himalayas herself, until friends persuaded her to go with them on a trek up to Everest Base Camp. What the heck, she thought-let's go! But if she was going to go to the Himalayas, she wasn't going to confine herself to the Everest region-or even to Nepal. In A Maverick Himalayan Way, Mary Jane describes her adventures in several parts of Nepal: in the Everest region, Manaslu, Annapurna, and the Kathmandu Valley. And, In the Chitral district of Pakistan, bordering Afghanistan, where the Hindu Kush mountains continue the Himalayas westward. In Sikkim, a once-independent principality east of Nepal. In several parts of India, namely Srinagar (in Kashmir), Dharamshala, Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, Kolkata, Mumbai and Kerala. In Abu Dhabi; and, In China and Japan, including a journey into the Japanese Alps, little-known outside Japan itself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kiwi adventurer Mary Jane Walker had no particular intention of visiting the Himalayas, till one day some friends invited her on a cheap trekking trip. So began a deep engagement with the region and its peoples and a series of return trips. Mary Jane visits and treks Pakistan's north-west frontier, Kashmir, Dharamshala (the abode of the Dalai Lama), high Himalayan Nepal (the Annapurna, Manaslu and Everest regions), and Sikkim. She also explores central India, Pakistan's north-west frontier, Mumbai, Kerala and Kolkata, and takes a trip to the ecologically sensitive Chitwan region on the border of Nepal and India. She discusses the history and social conditions of the region's peoples including the consequences of the tragic 2015 Nepal earthquake, and makes many surprising discoveries: such as the fact that ancient coins minted in Peshawar (now in Pakistan) once bore the image of the Buddha--and, even more remarkably, his name in Greek letters!

Book Murder in the High Himalaya

Download or read book Murder in the High Himalaya written by Jonathan Green and published by PublicAffairs. This book was released on 2010-06-01 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On September 30, 2006 gunfire echoed through the thin air near Advance Base Camp on Cho Oyu Mountain. Frequented by thousands of climbers each year, Cho Oyu lies nineteen miles east of Mt. Everest on the border between Tibet and Nepal. To the elite mountaineering community, it offers a straightforward summit -- a warm-up climb to her formidable sister. To Tibetans, Cho Oyu promises a gateway to freedom through a secret glacial path: the Nangpa La. Murder in the High Himalaya is the unforgettable account of the brutal killing of Kelsang Namtso -- a seventeen-year-old Tibetan nun fleeing to India -- by Chinese border guards. Witnessed by dozens of Western climbers, Kelsang's death sparked an international debate over China's savage oppression of Tibet. Adventure reporter Jonathan Green has gained rare entrance into this shadow-land at the rooftop of the world. In his affecting portrait of modern Tibet, Green raises enduring questions about morality and the lengths we go to achieve freedom.

Download or read book The Small World of a Maverick written by H B Subrahmanyam and published by Notion Press. This book was released on 2018-03-26 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The Small World of a Maverick” is altogether of a different genre’ respecting the wise counsel of Swami Vivekananda, “He who says, ‘not me’, but ‘Thou’ the Lord fills his heart.” Though it is primarily an autobiography the “I” is consciously subdued to “i” with the emphasis more on “You” and “He.” The eleven episodes narrated in essence are real and the discerning readers would surely vouch for their authenticity as they too may have experienced similar incidents.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A magisterial history of the Himalaya: an epic story of peoples, cultures, and adventures among the world’s highest mountains. For centuries, the unique and astonishing geography of the Himalaya has attracted those in search of spiritual and literal elevation: pilgrims, adventurers, and mountaineers seeking to test themselves among the world’s most spectacular and challenging peaks. But far from being wild and barren, the Himalaya has been home to a diversity of indigenous and local cultures, a crucible of world religions, a crossroads for trade, and a meeting point and conflict zone for empires past and present. In this landmark work, nearly two decades in the making, Ed Douglas makes a thrilling case for the Himalaya’s importance in global history and offers a soaring account of life at the "roof of the world." Spanning millennia, from the earliest inhabitants to the present conflicts over Tibet and Everest, Himalaya explores history, culture, climate, geography, and politics. Douglas profiles the great kings of Kathmandu and Nepal; he describes the architects who built the towering white Stupas that distinguish Himalayan architecture; and he traces the flourishing evolution of Hinduism, Islam, and Buddhism that brought Himalayan spirituality to the world. He also depicts with great drama the story of how the East India Company grappled for dominance with China’s emperors, how India fought Mao’s Communists, and how mass tourism and ecological transformation are obscuring the bloody legacy of the Cold War. Himalaya is history written on the grandest yet also the most human scale—encompassing geology and genetics, botany and art, and bursting with stories of courage and resourcefulness.

Book The Gurkha Way

Download or read book The Gurkha Way written by John Sadler and published by Pen and Sword Military. This book was released on 2023-11-30 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 18th century in the town of Gorkha, just north of Kathmandu, ruler Prithvi Narayan fought campaigns against his neighbors and the British. During the fighting his warriors, renowned for their aggression and courage, gained the respect of the British, who appreciated that the steadfast warriors would make excellent soldiers. Upon the declaration of peace in 1816, a partnership was born. This alliance would play a vital role in UK defense over the next two centuries, from surviving the Indian Mutiny of 1857 and fighting in the jungles of Burma to the Khyber Pass, which would keep the Gurkhas in action for ninety years. The First World War sent the Regiment to the trenches, where battalion after battalion was decimated. Some 20 Gurkha battalions were deployed in the Second World War, which was soon increased to 45 following Dunkirk. Around 250,000 Gurkha soldiers would serve and were deployed most significantly in North Africa but also served with distinction in the Italian Campaign and Monte Cassino, as well as the decisive battles of Imphal and Kohima in the Far East. while the Gurkhas saw a drop in overall numbers post-war, they have continued to make integral contributions to many operations, including the Falklands and in Afghanistan, which this book examines extensively, with a special focus on Operation Herrick. In The Gurkha Way, John Sadler tells the story of the Gurkhas from their inception to modern day through interviews, unpublished diaries and correspondence. With over 200 years' experience, these steadfastly loyal soldiers are a link to an imperial past but also a key component of the modern British army. There is no other comparable unit in any of the world’s armies, (with the obvious exception of the Indian Army), or one more respected and loved by the British.

Book The Macau Maverick

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Working as a Christian doctor in a place controlled by the Macau Mafia, Dr. Bill Swan was in constant danger of being discovered as an underground Christian missionary. Using Macau as a base, he smuggled Bibles into China and slipped through the net of the Chinese Communist government. He established medical clinics and staffed them with Christian nurses, doctors, and teachers who set up underground churches. They were always in danger of being discovered. Some actually were. People disappeared, and lives were lost. The story is true, and the life he lived is an inspiration to those who are called to take the story of Christ to a world that has never heard it. As one of his converts asked, “This is good news. Why haven’t we heard this story before?”
