Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: India in 1939 was not a free state. Under British rule, young Indian men feared they would be forced to fight in the recently declared war on Germany. Shastri is one of these young men. Already incarcerated by the age of fifteen, however, Shastri turns down political opportunities in order to suffer with his people as a freedom fighter-and suffer he did. It is several years before India is declared a free state, in 1947. By then, Vedanta is born. Vedanta forms a friendship with the wise and learned Shastri, and soon Vedanta becomes Shastri's adopted son, accepting instruction from this respected elder. Together, they must navigate a newly free India, where the rules have changed and politics are as complicated as ever. Over a forty-year span, the life of Shastri pours into that of Vedanta. Through love of God and of women, both men seek peace and enlightenment. Although theirs is a story of India, the struggles of elder Shastri and young Vedanta are universal. They too seek to find the meaning of life, the strength to face challenges, and the power to trust, in spite of impossible odds.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Debut novelist Lesley Jørgensen delivers a rich, funny delight of a novel in which the “marriage plot” is on dazzling display. But as scandals, secrets, culture clashes, and misunderstandings abound—how will anyone find time for love? Mrs. Begum is the doting, anxious mother of three grown children—Tariq, an art curator with a secret he’s not quite ready to share with his parents; her baby, Shunduri, the pampered princess of the family; and her daughter Rohimum, who has returned home to rural England in shame. Mrs. Begum is determined to marry them off, and marry them off well. But where to start? Mrs. Begum’s husband, the fastidious, stuffy Dr. Choudhury, has moved the family to a cottage on the grounds of Bourne Abbey, a grand but crumbling estate whose restoration he is overseeing. There, the Choudhury family lives alongside the estate’s youngish heirs—Henry and Richard. The Bournes and the Choudhurys are equally snared in the spider-web of centuries-old tradition, but the Abbey itself houses a mystery that will reveal long-hidden entanglements—ones that the two families never anticipated…

Book excerpt: The monument to Isaac Brock (1769–1812) on Queenston Heights in Canada, as high as Nelson’s column in London, pays tribute to the military commander of all troops opposing the American invasion of Canada during the War of 1812. Brock’s service during the War of 1812 includes leading the capture of Detroit. He was killed on the morning of 13 October 1812, leading a company of the 49th Foot in a counter-attack on the American lodgement atop Queenston Heights. Although Brock died and his uphill charge against the American muskets failed, the invasion was repulsed soon afterwards. A Matter of Honour focuses on Brock’s career as a military commander and also as a civil administrator for the government of Upper Canada. Early chapters deal with his life and military service up to 1791. The book also records his command of the 49th Regiment in the Low Countries and at Copenhagen up to his arrival in Canada in 1802. Brock spent more time in Canada than any other British general who fought in the War of 1812. He faced a difficult situation in Canada, defending a long frontier with meagre resources. However, he was renowned for his resourcefulness, inspiring leadership and ability to keep opponents off-balance

Book excerpt: THE BOOK OF PRIDE captures the true story of the gay rights movement from the 1960s to the present, through richly detailed, stunning interviews with the leaders, activists, and ordinary people who witnessed the movement and made it happen. These individuals fought battles both personal and political, often without the support of family or friends, frequently under the threat of violence and persecution. By shining a light on these remarkable stories of bravery and determination, THE BOOK OF PRIDE not only honors an important chapter in American history, but also empowers young people today (both LGBTQ and straight) to discover their own courage in order to create positive change. Furthermore, it serves a critically important role in ensuring the history of the LGBTQ movement can never be erased, inspiring us to resist all forms of oppression with ferocity, community, and, most importantly, pride

Book Colours of Money Shades of Pride

Download or read book Colours of Money Shades of Pride written by Fred Y.L. Chiu and published by Hong Kong University Press. This book was released on 2003-06-01 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In June 1986, a Japanese watch factory in Hong Kong tried to fire 36 of its women workers. This provoked an unprecedented sit-in by 300 of the women employed at the plant. The sit-in lasted for 13 days and accounted for over half the days lost to labour unrest that year. At the time Fred Chiu, an ex-prisoner of consciousness in Taiwan, was studying industrial conflicts in Hong Kong. Although an anthropologist, he became deeply and personally involved in the strike. In this account of those intense days, he 'combines the art of the story-teller with the wizardry of the sophisticated social theorist' to report the events and to interpret them in a style characterized by clarity, vigour and honesty.
