Book Extended Program Notes for the Master s Recital of Dylan F Thomas

Download or read book Extended Program Notes for the Master s Recital of Dylan F Thomas written by Dylan F. Thomas and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project paper consists of written extended program notes for a Master's Recital performed in the Spring Semester of 2018. These notes include short biographies about each composer's life and career, a brief introduction to the librettist, a translation of each piece, composer and librettist biographies, and style and performance practices of the selections. The recital was comprised of approximately sixty minutes of music, in six language sets: French, German, Italian, Japanese, English, and Spanish. The style periods explored the late Classical, early Romantic, mid-Romantic, late Romantic, early Twentieth-Century, mid and late Twentieth-Century. The first set featured composers Duparc and Massenet, with Pourquoi me reveillier from the opera Werther completing the set. The second set is the German set. While the Beethoven and Flotow pieces were composed chronologically before the French set, they show the vocal movement toward the Romantic period, both musically and lyrically. The third set is from turn of the century Italy. The verismo movement was the operatic answer to the global artistic shift toward realism and truth on stage, in writing, and in art. The fourth section is the Japanese set. Western culture has had an immense impact on the entirety of Japanese culture itself. One of those influences can be observed in its traditional art song. The fifth set includes two songs in English and one in Spanish. These pieces were included to highlight the contributions of modern American composers that have stayed within the traditionally operatic vocal style as seen through the Verdian archetype. The final selection on this recital was a piece by Agustin Lara (1897-1970). Granada is a popular a Spanish art song written in 1932.

Book Networking the Russian Diaspora

Download or read book Networking the Russian Diaspora written by Hon-Lun Helan Yang and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2020-09-30 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Networking the Russian Diaspora is a fascinating and timely study of interwar Shanghai. Aside from the vacated Orthodox Church in the former French Concession where most Russian émigrés resided, Shanghai today displays few signs of the bustling settlement of those years. Russian musicians established the first opera company in China, as well as choirs, bands and ensembles to play for their own and other communities. Russian musicians were the core of Shanghai’s lauded Municipal Orchestra, and taught at China’s first conservatory. Two Russian émigré composers in particular -- Alexander Tcherepnin and Aaron Avshalomov – experimented with incorporating Chinese elements into their compositions as harbingers of intercultural music that has become a well-recognized trend in composition since the late twentieth century. The Russian musical scene in Shanghai was the embodiment of musical cosmopolitanism, anticipating the hybrid nature of twentieth-first century music arising from cultural contacts through migration, globalization, and technological advancement. Networking the Russian Diaspora is a pioneering study of the Russian community, especially its musical activities and influence in Shanghai. While the focus of the book is on music, it also gives insight into the social dynamics between Russians and other Europeans on the one hand, and with the Chinese on the other. The volume co-authored by Chinese music specialists makes a significant contribution to studies of diaspora, cultural identity, and migration through focusing on a little studied area of Sino-Russian cultural relations and Russian influence in modern China. The discoveries stretch the boundaries of music studies by addressing the relational aspects of Western music – how it has articulated national and cultural identities but also served to connect people of different origins and cultural backgrounds.

Book Europe Empire and Spectacle in Nineteenth Century British Music

Download or read book Europe Empire and Spectacle in Nineteenth Century British Music written by Julian Rushton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume illuminates musical connections between Britain and the continent of Europe, and Britain and its Empire. The seldom-recognized vitality of musical theatre and other kinds of spectacle in Britain itself, and also the flourishing concert life of the period, indicates a means of defining tradition and identity within nineteenth-century British musical culture. The objective of the volume has been to add significantly to the growing literature on these topics. It benefits not only from new archival research, but also from fresh musicological approaches and interdisciplinary methods that recognize the integral role of music within a wider culture, including religious, political and social life. The essays are by scholars from the USA, Britain, and Europe, covering a wide range of experience. Topics range from the reception of Bach, Mozart, and Liszt in England, a musical response to Shakespeare, Italian opera in Dublin, exoticism, gender, black musical identities, British musicians in Canada, and uses of music in various theatrical genres and state ceremony, and in articulating the politics of the Union and Empire.
