Book Against the Current Privatization Water Markets and the State in Chile

Download or read book Against the Current Privatization Water Markets and the State in Chile written by Carl J. Bauer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1981 Chile's military government dictated a new Water Code that radically changed the country's previous water rights system by strengthening private property rights, favoring market incentives, and reducing state regulation. Against the Current: Privatization, Water Markets, and the State in Chile is the first empirical and interdisciplinary study of water markets in Chile, which is the leading international example of free market water policies. Against the Current: Privatization, Water Markets, and the State in Chile challenges the glowing reports given by neoliberals in Chile and the World Bank, showing that the results of this economic experiment have actually been rather mixed. Within the agricultural sector the Water Code has worked fairly well, although the market incentives to conserve water have been ineffective and water rights trading has been less active than expected. The Code's impact has been more negative at the level of river basins, where the institutional framework has revealed critical flaws in coordinating multiple water users and resolving conflicts. Against the Current: Privatization, Water Markets, and the State in Chile combines law, political economy, and geography to analyze the disadvantages, problems, and wider contexts of water markets. This book will appeal to everyone interested in property rights, market-friendly environmental policies, the political economy of sustainable development, and the intersection of economics with law and institutions.

Book Assessing the Macroeconomic Impact of Structural Reforms in Chile

Download or read book Assessing the Macroeconomic Impact of Structural Reforms in Chile written by Metodij Hadzi-Vaskov and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2018-12-14 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study investigates the likely macroeconomic impact of various structural reforms that align the Chilean regulatory framework with international best practices. In this context, the analysis: i) presents a comparison across a large set of structural indicators; ii) identifies policy gaps with respect to OECD countries; and iii) provides quantification of the likely growth and fiscal impact of policy reforms needed to close the gaps. Chile’s economy is likely to benefit from streamlining business regulation and licensing, strengthening innovation and R&D capacity, improving labor market flexibility, and enhancing active labor market policies. Overall, the study presents a scenario in which Chile closes structural gaps with OECD’s 25th percentile over five years, with up to 6 percent higher output level and a cumulative net fiscal gain of about 1⁄2 percent of GDP.

This book was released on 2007-09 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2005 in the subject Tourism, grade: 1,5, Stralsund University of Applied Sciences (University of Applied Sciences), course: Leisure and Tourism Management, 80 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: On the economic front, tourism has the capacity to create jobs: jobs for the poor, jobs in the indigenous communities, unskilled as well as highly qualified jobs, jobs in seaside resorts as well as in remote rural areas and in ecotourism activities. Tourism is a much more diverse industry than many others and can build upon a wide resource base. Diversity increases the scope for wide participation. Furthermore, most export industries depend on financial, productive and human capital. Indeed, tourism depends on these but also on natural capital, such as wildlife, scenery and beaches, and culture, vital assets of many developing countries in Latin America and the Caribbean. For these reasons combined, tourism should be considered as one of the important economic development opportunities available to developing countries in the region. The United Nations declared the year 2002 as INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF ECOTOURISM. The development of ecotourism often involves precious and fragile natural resources and must be done with great sensitivity. Natural habitats have been diminishing at alarming rates and equally alarming reports are regularly published on diminishing water resources, deforestation, increases in pollution, the destruction of corral reefs and many more. This is why ecotourism should also be sensitive to local communities, their land rights, traditions, cultures and ways of life. Ecotourism in remote areas cannot be developed without the consent and active involvement of local peoples, who should become partners in the process. For many countries like Chile, particularly in the developing world, tourism is one of the few meaningful sources of economic development and job creation. What would be the situation of count
