Book The Elements of Qualitative Analysis Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Elements of Qualitative Analysis Classic Reprint written by William Albert Noyes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Qualitative Analysis Two reasons have led to the writing of this book. One has been the desire to give to my classes a scheme for quali tative analysis in which points where a beginner is liable to make mistakes are especially guarded by careful and explicit directions for procedure. In this respect the book is the result of considerable experience with classes in the labora tory, where especial pains have been taken to discover the reasons for errors on the part of ordinary students. Quali tative analysis is of no value unless it leads to certain results, and the beginner needs to have it impressed upon his mind that certainty can only be attained by performing each operation in exactly the right way. In the author's opinion it is better to teach the student the right way at first, rather than to give only an outline and expect him to fill in the details of manipulation for himself. Every one who has had experience in the matter knows, however, that no amount of careful direction in a text-book can supply the place of constant watchfulness on the part of the instructor. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Qualitative Analysis: A Manual for the Use of Students of Chemistry in Schools and Colleges The purpose of the authors has been to prepare a work on qualitative analysis that shall be both exact and compendious, avoiding on the one hand the diffuseness of the larger treatises and on the other the incompleteness of the smaller manuals. Full statement has been made of the behavior of the bases toward certain reagents, but extraneous details have been omitted. Under the headings Methods of Analysis explicit directions have been given for the separation and detection of the elements, and these directions are followed in every case by a full discussion of the reasons for the different steps and of the difficulties that may arise in the course of analysis. It is hoped that this method of presentation, together with the occasional references to such articles in chemical journals as deal with debated points or new methods, may serve to arouse the interest of the student and to discourage on his part a blind and mechanical style of work that is so common in courses in qualitative analysis and is so greatly to be deplored. The Introduction discusses in considerable detail the principles and operations involved in qualitative analysis, but it does not include the consideration of the dissociation theory. Book Elementary Qualitative Analysis

Download or read book Elementary Qualitative Analysis written by Benton Dales and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-23 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Qualitative Analysis: A Laboratory Guide Tms manual is offered as a laboratory guide for stu dents of qualitative analysis who have had a year's work in general chemistry. It is the outgrowth of several years' experience with students registered in the varied courses of a university curriculum. The aim in the prep aration of the book has been to systematize the work as much as possible, yet to avoid encouraging rule of thumb work in the laboratory. Our viewpoint has been to give a sufficient number of well-organized characteristic reactions accompanied by appropriate questions to stimulate and encourage analytical thinking. The attempt is made to bring out the value of differential behavior toward reagents early so that the student has at the commencement of his qualitative study an idea of the ultimate application of the reactions. We do not deem the study of the reactions used in the schemes followed in the systematic procedure for the analysis of unknowns sufficient to give the student a grasp of qualitative analysis. The use of analytical questions bearing on the reactions studied has an inesti mable value in the student's analytical training and greatly broadens his knowledge of the chemistry of the metals. Book A Manual of Qualitative Chemical Analysis Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Manual of Qualitative Chemical Analysis Classic Reprint written by McGregory McGregory and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Qualitative Chemical Analysis An examination of most of the works on the subject of qualitative analysis will show that they belong in one of two general classes which may be described as follows: first, the exhaustive treatise, of which such a work as that of Fresenius will serve as an example; second, the abbreviated treatise, often very much abbreviated, in which the author attempts to cover the whole work in a few lessons. For graduate students, or for the better class of beginners who are able to devote the most of their time to the study, books of the first class may be invaluable. But the great majority of the students in our colleges do not become chemists. They study analytical chemistry at the most but a short time, and what they acquire is, and should be, to a considerable extent, of disciplinary value to them. To the great majority of our students, therefore, the exhaustive treatise, especially at the beginning of their course, is a means of confusion rather than an intelligent guide. The second class of text-books is also likely to fail with the average student, since it teaches him to analyze an unknown substance in such a purely mechanical way that the actual knowledge of the subject acquired is small, and the disciplinary value of the work becomes a minimum. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plattner's Manual of Qualitative and Quantitative Analysis With the Blowpipe Wm, at the publisher's request, after the third edition of Fumnn's blowpipe Ainnrsrs was exhausted, I undertook the revision of the present edition, it was in the belief that now, as formerly, many would desire to have at hand a complete manual upon so useful a subject. As far as possible I have confined myself to the previous labors Of my instructor, whom I can never forget, and have only added such new and approved matter as had been made known since the appearance of the third edition, because I have had ample Opportunity, during several years in which I have labored as a teacher of this branch of analysis in our Mining Academy, to convince myself of the suitable way in which the subject is classified and treated in his work. May this fourth edition find as friendly a reception as has been extended to its predecessors. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Laboratory Manual of Qualitative Analysis Classic Reprint

Download or read book Laboratory Manual of Qualitative Analysis Classic Reprint written by Wilhelm Segerblom and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-23 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Laboratory Manual of Qualitative Analysis It is well known that silver chloride is insoluble in water, and the presence of the sodium nitrate in the resulting liquid does not seem to aflect the solubility of the precipitate. If the Silver chloride be separated from the solution and divided into two parts, and one part treated with dilute nitric acid and the other with ammonium hydrate, it is found that the first part does not dissolve, while the second part does dissolve. It is fair to assume, then, that if nitric acid is present with the silver nitrate when the sodium chloride is added, the precipita tion of the silver chloride is not obstructed but if ammonium hydrate is present with the silver nitrate when the sodium chloride is added, the expected precipitate of silver chloride will not come down, though silver is present in the solution. This may easily be verified by experiment, and shows the importance of keeping track of everything that may be present in a solution under examination. Download or read book A Short Course in Qualitative Analysis Classic Reprint written by J. M. Crafts and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short Course in Qualitative Analysis In preparing a new edition of this work, the editor has made no essential alternation of the plan adopted by Professor Crafts in the previous editions. He has endeavored, however, as far as possible, to embody the practical results of the great advance made in both theoretical and practical chemistry within the past ten years. The few important changes thereby rendered necessary may be briefly specified. Chapter II., on chemical nomenclature, has been entirely rewritten. The usefulness of the work has been somewhat extended by the introduction of several elements not included in the previous editions, viz.: strontium, cadmium, iodine, and bromine. Further changes have been made in the methods of separation and detection of several of the elements; more reliable processes being substituted for those which in the hands of students were found not to be entirely satisfactory. The editor desires especially to acknowledge his obligation to his friend and colleague, Dr. G. C. Caldwell, for numerous valuable suggestions of which he has availed himself. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Chemical Analysis: Qualitative and Quantitative The consequence of this method is the stereotyped product so painfully familiar to all who are engaged in teaching or examining, namely, a certain number of regulation tests, arranged with a semblance of method in the everlasting three columns, headed Experiment, Observation, Inference, followed by a more or less slovenly copy of the time-honoured tables. The valuelessness of such a written-out record must be patent to all teachers, and yet we still continue to accept it in lieu of a few real notes, less quickly and easily examined no doubt, because less stereotyped, but of infinitely more value to the student himself. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lecture Notes on Qualitative Analysis Although the advantages to be gained by teaching qualitative analysis by lecture are sufficiently obvious, it is a serious disadvantage to the student that the necessity of taking proper notes often pre vents him from seeing what takes place upon the lecture table. This little book was intended to give concisely the most important facts essential to intelligent work in the laboratory, and thus give the stu dent more leisure for observation in the lecture room. A comparative description of those compounds of bases and acids which are commonly found or used in analysis is first given, and after wards a method of separation which experience has proved to be suf ficiently simple and accurate, is briefly explained. This method of procedure from the properties. Of compounds to the methods of sepa ration will also serve to show the way in which the more difficult problems of analysis must be solved.
