Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Practical Hygiene The work is divided into two books: inthe First I have arranged the chief subjects of hygiene in what is, for my purpose, the most convenient order, and have illustrated them by examples drawn from army life. I have also included some other topics, such as meteorology and statistics, which it is important medical officers should learn. In these several chapters I have thought constantly on what would be useful to army surgeons, who are often far from all books, or possibility of reference. So that, in some parts, I have endeavoured to make the book one of reference, though I have been obliged to compress it to the greatest degree. In the Second Book, the service of the soldier is more particularly described. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Practical Hygiene: Prepared Especially for Use in the Medical Service of the Army Without greatly increasing the size of this work, much new material has been added, and the old matter has been carefully revised, though the rapid sale of the first edition has rendered any great changes unnecessary. Several fresh wood-outs, and a plate showing more thoroughly the microscopical characters of some starches, have been added. For most of the drawings I have, as before, to thank Dr Maddox of Woolston. They have been drawn on wood or copper by Mr Bagg. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of Practical Hygiene The lack Of a convenient handbook for the guidance Of students in the sanitary analysis Of air, water, soil. And the principal food materials, and in testing the ventilation of buildings, is my apology for the prepa ration Of this little work. There are several excellent handbooks in German that cover about the same field, as well as a number of general treatises on hygiene in English that contain some of the methods incorporated in this work, but there is no short and concise' labora tory guide, in the English language, that satisfactorily meets the wants of the student in practical hygiene. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of Hygiene: A Practical Manual for Students, Physicians, and Health-Officers The causes of disease may also be divided into the pre disposing and the exciting causes. The predisposing causes of disease are the various conditions which, by their influence upon the body, render it less resistant to the invasion of pathogenic bacteria, or otherwise pre dispose to disordered health. The conditions which have been classed as remote causes of disease also belong in this class, but besides these there are other important conditions which predispose to disease, such as the age and sex of a person, hereditary influences, race, conjugal condition, the hygienic condition of the environment, the density of the population, the nature of the occupa tion, ' and the climate of the locality. Dr. Farr found that the mortality increases with the density of the population, not in direct proportion to the density, but as its sixth root. The exciting causes of disease are the specific elements which are the etiologic factors in the production of dis ease. These are synonymous with the immediate causes of disease in the first classification, the physical, chemi cal, and vital causes of disease. Book A Manual of Hygiene and Sanitation Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Manual of Hygiene and Sanitation Classic Reprint written by Seneca Egbert and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-13 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Hygiene and Sanitation The preceding paragraph indicates the individual or personal aspect that marked the common concept of the subject until a comparatively short time ago. More recently the tendency is also to view its func tions, opportunities and problems from a social and altruistic stand-point, and the field has so enlarged in this direction that it is questionable whether it may not be better to supplant the older word - Hygiene when used to refer to the general science, with the newer term - Public Health and Preventive Medicine. But, after all, he who works to improve the sanitary condition of his neighbors and his neighborhood, no matter how extensive these may be in numbers and area, at the same time well serves his own interests, for not only is disease no respecter of persons, but its transmission and dis semination depend very much upon one's relationships with others.
