Book A Manual of Practical Draining Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Manual of Practical Draining Classic Reprint written by Henry Stephens and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-22 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Practical Draining When the portions of the book OF the farm treating of Drain. Ing appeared, it was suggested to me to publish the article in a separate form, because, as my friends alleged, so important a sub ject as Draining would make a popular book. However good the idea, or attering the suggestion, my time was too much occupied with the bringing out of my systematic work, to avail myself of it. Changes, however, have of late been made by the Legislature, which will ere long, as I conceive, necessitate the practice of drain ing in every part of the kingdom For, I suppose, even the most ardent promoter of free-trade is not disposed to deny, that the entire abolition of protective duties will place the produce of our own land in a position rhuch more unfavourable than that of' the foreigner, by both being brought into direct competition in our own market. Nor, on the other hand, can it be gainsaid by the strictest protectionist of native agriculture, that a very lar e pro portion of the land of this kingdom is still much in want 0 drain ing, and that draining is the first and most efficient step towards exciting the natural, and increasino' the acquired ferti ity of the soil. To compete, therefore, with t e foreigner, there exists with the agriculturists of this country the most powerful incentive for increasing the permanent fertility of the soil, if that be practicable; and its practicability is known by the agriculturists themselves to be in their own hands, by pursuing a substantial system of draining. Book Rules for Radicals

Download or read book Rules for Radicals written by Saul Alinsky and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2010-06-30 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “This country's leading hell-raiser" (The Nation) shares his impassioned counsel to young radicals on how to effect constructive social change and know “the difference between being a realistic radical and being a rhetorical one.” First published in 1971 and written in the midst of radical political developments whose direction Alinsky was one of the first to question, this volume exhibits his style at its best. Like Thomas Paine before him, Alinsky was able to combine, both in his person and his writing, the intensity of political engagement with an absolute insistence on rational political discourse and adherence to the American democratic tradition.

Book Decentring Urban Governance

Download or read book Decentring Urban Governance written by Mark Bevir and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-20 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decentring Urban Governance seeks to rethink governance not as a particular state formation, but as the diverse policies emerging associated with the impact of modernist social science on policy making, considering the diverse meanings that inspire governing practices across time, space, and policy sectors in urban context. Taking an interdisciplinary approach, the book goes beyond neoliberalism, and is interested in other webs of meaning through which actors encounter, interpret, and evaluate social science, which have received less analytical attention. All these different webs of meaning – elite narratives, social science, and local traditions – influence patterns of action. The book creates an analytical space by which to consider situated agency and localised resistance to the discourses and policies of political elites, including the myriad ways in which local actors have resisted practices of governance on the ground. This text will be of key interest to scholars, students and practitioners of urban governance, governance and more broadly to the social sciences, housing, social policy, law and welfare studies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What sort of information did people in early modern England seek? In The Practical Renaissance Donna Seger explores the diffusion and reception of prescriptive publications over the 16th and 17th centuries. Published in an age of dynamic religious and political change, these texts demonstrate the universal desire for health and wealth, a fortified body and an orderly household. Showing how classical and continental information had been "Englished" over time, this book shows how new publications supplanted these traditional ideas with more empirical and authoritative knowledge. Published in an age of dynamic religious and political change, these texts, which include plague tracts, husbandry handbooks, printed recipe books, and navigation manuals, demonstrate the universal desire for health and wealth, a fortified body and an orderly household. Divided into three parts, the opening chapters explore factors which affected the diffusion of practical knowledge via prescriptive texts. Part two focuses on the interaction between new discoveries and traditional authority, and the final section considers debates in the 'medical marketplace', the term 'knowledge-mongerer' and the commodification of knowledge at this time. A thorough exploration into the popular and pragmatic expressions of the period, The Practical Renaissance offers a new window into the movement in which knowledge and information became power.
