Download or read book A Manual of Orthography and Elementary Sounds Classic Reprint written by Helen R. Pattengill and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Orthography and Elementary Sounds A pure and easy pronunciation, a clear and natural articulation are accomplishments well worth diligent and persistent efforts to acquire. The knowledge of the use of diacritical marks is of great service in reading the language of the dictionary and, very properly, has come to be an essential factor in teaching pupils to read. It is sought in this brief manual to give a compilation of rules, suggestions and exercises on the subject of elementary sounds and diacritical marks that will prove helpful to teachers and pupils. The rapid and steady sale of the volume indicates that the book serves its purpose. The author hopes that the Manual may aid in securing somewhat of a uniformity in teaching and using the proper sounds and their symbols. The list of words given are enough to afford ample drill to young and old in spelling, pronunciation, and articulation. It is an easy matter to create great interest in this subject among the pupils in school, and may it no longer be truthfully said: "TheAmericans are noted for the carelessness of their speech." In the third edition, there were added sixteen pages; in the sixth edition other pages were added and the work revised to conform to the latest editions of the great lexicons; in the seventeeth edition a chapter on word study was added by Charles Carlisle of Big Rapids, who also assisted in the revision of the nineteenth edition. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Elementary Phonetics It was not without much hesitation that I undertook the task, for I felt that my knowledge of the more scientific side of the subject was scarcely definite or accurate enough to ensure its satisfactory accomplishment. My apprehensions on this score were, however, relieved when Professor Fraser, Lecturer on Phonetics in the University of Toronto, kindly undertook to revise the proofs of the part of this book which treats of the general laws of sound production, and of the mode of articulation of the various sounds. I am afraid he has found that my dependence upon his aid has made his task a heavier one than he anticipated, but he has performed it with the painstaking thoroughness and disregard of trouble that always characterize him. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sounds and Their Relations: A Complete Manual of Universal Alphabetics, Illustrated by Means of Visible Speech and Exhibiting the Pronunciation of English, in Various Styles, and of Other Languages and Dialects The Inaugural Edition of "Visible Speech" was not intended, or adapted, for the popular introduction of the System, but for the use of the comparatively limited class of Students of Philology. Visible Speech has now been brought into such wide practical applications - not only in this field of scholarship, but in the work of foreign Missions; in the treatment of Impediments and Defects of Speech; in teaching Articulation to the Deaf; in facilitating the acquisition of Foreign Languages; in the teaching of Elocution; and in the training of Common School Teachers - that a simpler and more practical Manual of the System was urgently called for. "Sounds And Their Relations," which could not be exemplified by means of ordinary letters, are here exhibited in the symbols of Visible Speech. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ear and Voice Training by Means of Elementary Sounds of Language Some persons attribute the lack of distinct percep tions of sounds to partial deafness. Careful observa tion and long experience with children lead to the conclusion that most of the common defects in sound perception exist because of a lack of proper training during childhood to develop this power of the mind into activity. Careful observation has led to the be lief, also, that many cases of supposed color-blindness are only instances of undeveloped color-sense. From observation of young children, before they speak words, it has been found that some of the sounds of a and some of the sounds of 0, are the earliest vowel sounds uttered by children and that the sounds of 771. Book First Reader

Download or read book First Reader written by Edward P. Moses and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Reader: With 4, 000 Words for Spelling by Sound This series of school books is based upon the principle that children may be taught to spell and read by sound thousands of English words as easily as words are taught in German schools. The method has long been followed in schools under the author's supervision and in the direction of the education of his children at home. The present irrational mode of spelling some English words and the unscientific methods often employed in teaching all our words have frequently proven an insuperable barrier against the acquisition of a knowledge of the art of reading by a large class of children who have not been able to go to school long enough to learn how to read with sufficient ease and fluency to gain a love of literature before they must leave school to engage in the fierce struggle of bread-winning. To change irrational spelling is beyond our power, but to pursue a scientific mode of teaching reading is open to all teachers.
