For religious instruction to'be given efficiently, the children cannot be separated into fewer than three great divisions (l), The infants, 12a, children up to the age when they come to the use of reason; from that age to the age of nine or ten; and the elder and more advanced children. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Christian Doctrine The usefulness of theology is as little open to dispute as its legitimacy. It is necessary, not to ordinary Christians, but to Christian teachers and advocates. It is neither necessary nor possible that every one should be a lawyer, doctor, engineer but every one who aspires to one of these professions must have more than the empirical knowledge which suffices for ordinary life. Times like ours are the last in which Christian teachers can afford to dispense with accurate and complete knowledge. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Faith of the Gospel: A Manual of Christian Doctrine This history of the origin of the present book will explain its form. While attempting to go with fair thoroughness into the various questions raised, it does not profess to deal with them exhaustively, as a book written for the learned would. It assumes little in the reader besides an average English education and a devout mind. Recondite theological language is avoided. Terms are explained as they occur. It is hoped, therefore, that'the book may prove useful, not only to Teachers of the Divine Mysteries at the beginning of their studies, but to many private Chris tians also, who wish to have an intelligent grasp of their faith. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Christian Doctrine: Comprising Dogma, Moral and Worship This book is intended as a manual of religious instruo tion not only in the Novitiates and Scholasticates of teach ing Congregations, but also in the classes of High Schools, Academies, and Colleges. Although it is an abridgment of the three volumes, Dogma, Moral, and Worship, that constitute the Intermediate Course of Religious Instruction, it does not sacrifice clearness, precision, or method. In the Intermediate Course the teacher will find matter for explanation and development and also synoptic tables for review. For the pupil the present volume is sufficiently complete to impart that knowledge of religion, which, in the Words of St. Paul, is according to doctrine that he may. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of Christian Doctrine Y revered instructor in Christian Theology, Alvah Hovey, D. D., LL. D., generously granted _me permission to use his Manual of Christian Theology in the construction of this handbook. His order and outline have been fol lowed, with such changes as the intent oi this vol ume seemed to require. The purpose of my work is to present the ele ments of Christian Doctrine in a form adapted to the classroom, and to the use of students who are be ginners in the synthetic studies of biblical truth or are seeking for substance of doctrine that may be believed. A. H. Strong, D. D., LL. D., president of Rochester Theological Seminary, has kindly given me liberty to quote freely from his latest the sev enth, edition of Systematic Theology. Much help has been derived from the work of Prof. Sam uel Harris, D. D., LL. D., entitled God the Creator and Lord of All, and from representatives of vari ous schools of thought. But the limits of this book do not allow an extended list of authors consulted, and to whom indebtedness is acknowledged. Book Spirago s Method of Christian Doctrine

Download or read book Spirago s Method of Christian Doctrine written by Francis Spirago and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 610 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spirago's Method of Christian Doctrine: A Manual for Priests, Teachers, and Parents The Rev. Francis Spirago, the author of this work, is Professor of Religion at the Normal School in Trautenau, Austria. Some time ago he published a popular explanation of the Catechism ("Volkskatechismus"), which in a few years had an astonishing sale. It was translated into English under the title "The Catechism Explained," and is very popular with priests and lay catechists wherever English is spoken. Last year Spirago published the "Handbuch der Special methodic des Katholischen Religionsunterrichtes," the present work. But as he tells us in his preface, it was written nearly ten years ago, during which time he has kept revising and improving the book, giving it the benefit of ten years' experience in teaching Religion. He says further, "I have endeavored to apply to religious instruction the principles of modern pedagogics, which, on the whole, have produced great results in the field of education." In regard to the need of following a certain method specially adapted to the teaching of Catholic truth to children and other uninstructed persons, the author remarks: "Religious instruction closely resembles the practice of medical science. We pity the man who would enter upon a course of healing diseases totally heedless of the advice of practical and able physicians and the experience of past centuries. Still more would we pity the patients falling into the hands of such a quack whose maxim is: Experiment is better than study. What applies to physicians and the care of the body likewise holds good for the teacher of religion and the care of the souls of the young.
