Book A Manual of Agriculture for the Eighth Grade Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Manual of Agriculture for the Eighth Grade Classic Reprint written by A. M. Richardson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Agriculture for the Eighth Grade No attempt has been made to make an exhau'stive list of exercises. It would be an easy matter to devote all the time allotted to the study of agriculture in the eighth grade to any phase of the subject. Exercises are included in practically every phase of this great subject. Teachers are urged to lay special emphasis upon that type of farming that is of most importance in their locality. All the exercises included are easy to work out and illustrate some principle necessary in the study of agriculture. No apparatus is called for that cannot be easily procured at little or no cost. In any good text book on agriculture the teacher will find ample material for additional exercises if they care for extra ones along any particular line. In the back of the book six blank pages have been left in which the teacher may insert additional exercises. In case the county superintendent or county agriculturist desires to add exercises so as to amplify the work for the agriculture of his county, they may be prepared on typewritten sheets about 517§x8$§ and the teachers in structed to paste them in the back of the Manual. The study of agriculture offers splendid opportunity for coopera tion between the home and the school and every opportunity should be taken advantage of. For example in the testing of seeds; have the pupils test seeds for any patron of the school who may care to have his seeds tested. In the spring, when you start the hotbed, have it understood that you are going to start different kinds of plants for transplanting, and that the parents are welcome to them. If the pupils have gardens at school, let them take their produce home. Have the pupils ask their parents practical questions that come up in their study. This will not only get the parents interested in what the children are doing, but it will give added interest to the children to know that they are studying things that they will be able to use and that older people are concerned about. Whenever possible to have school gardens, they will be found to be of great value, but they should be taken as a means to an end and not the end. Their value lies in the training and personal inspection that the teacher is able to give during the preparation of the ground; the sowing of the seed; and care up to the time school is out. After that they are seldom of any real value. They aid greatly in arousing interest. If every boy and girl could and would have a small garden at home, it would be better, because they could tend it during the summer, and have it where they could see it at all times. Most of these exercises have been tried out and used in the grade work of the Snohomish public schools. A few additional ones have been selected to make a more complete list, and to offer a somewhat larger field for selection by the teacher. Book Manual of Agriculture

Download or read book Manual of Agriculture written by George B. Emerson and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Agriculture: For the School, the Farm, and the Fireside This book is intended to supply an important defect in the instruction of youth. Children should not only receive instruction in the various studies now pursued in the schools, but they should be enabled to obtain the rudiments of a correct agricultural education in the forming period of life. Many of them are destined to work upon the surface of the earth, and to use the materials of which it is formed. They are to cooperate with the great powers of nature and to be able, in many instances, to control these powers. They instinctively long to become acquainted with the materials they are to work upon, and the powers they are to work with. An agricultural education should, therefore, be commenced in childhood. Children are always interested in animals and other natural objects. There is scarcely a fact exhibited in nature which does not, at once, interest their curiosity and appeal to their imagination. They should, therefore, learn about the earth, the different kinds of soil, the names of the different kinds of rocks and their uses. Tell children that, in the soil, the roots of the grasses dissolve the stones, and carry particles of them up and leave them, infinitely minute but infinitely numerous, in the stem and leaves, and that these particles make the grass strong enough to stand up, and they will be interested in the information. Book Beginnings in Agriculture Classic Reprint

Download or read book Beginnings in Agriculture Classic Reprint written by Albert Russell Mann and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-10 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beginnings in Agriculture This book is designed for the purpose of introducing the study of \a.griculture into the seventh and eighth grades of our elementary schools. It may also meet a need in some of the smaller high schools and in ungraded Special and private schools. When the pupil comes to well-developed high-school work, he will need a more detailed and specific text. The book is founded on the suggestions in the Report of the Committee on Industrial Education in Schools for Rural Communi ties, Of the National Educational Association. That Committee recommended for the school years 6 to 8, four sets of subjects as follows: first half year, the affairs Of agriculture; second half year, the soil; second year, farming schemes and crops; third year, ani mals. A condensation Of this plan into a two-year scheme has been attempted in the present volume. It has been the aim Of the author to cover the work very largely in a nature-study Spirit, by which it is meant that the pupil Shall be brought into as close touch as possible with the actual farms, soils, crops, animals, and affairs. The problems are intended to set the pupils at work on their own account rather than to enable them to answer questions that may be suggested in the text. It is, of course, essential to practical school conditions that there shall be reading-matter and recitation-matter in the book. Perhaps Part I, dealing with the general agricultural situation, may be used as a series Of introductory reading and discussion exercises, the actual work with subject-matter to begin with Part II. The open book method of teaching, now used successfully in many schools for history and geography, might be employed advantageously with this text, especially in schools in which nature-study receives little attention. It is assumed that the teacher will see that the pupils work out the problems, Or as many of them as have useful application to the affairs of the particular community. It is to be hoped that there will be a school-garden on the premises, or that small areas may be set aside at the homes of the pupils, on which many of the sug gestions in the book may be worked out personally. It is specially to be desired that the parents be brought into the work, in order that the agricultural affairs of the community may be related to the school. Therefore, a large number of problems have been pre sented with this end in view, the expectation being that the pupil will ask the parents for the proper solution of the questions. Book The Culture of Farm Crops

Download or read book The Culture of Farm Crops written by Henry Stewart and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Culture of Farm Crops: A Manual of the Science of Agriculture, and a Hand-Book of Practice for American Farmers Not a farmer of that day, nor a chemist, knew that bones furnished phosphoric acid to plants; or that guano provided in its ammonia the materials from which their gluten and other nitrogenous substances were derived. Indeed the renowned father of agricultural science: Liebig - when he propounded his mineral theory, which was that the ashes of plants contained everything which they drew from the soil, and that if the mineral substances contained in the ashes, were supplied in sufficient quantity to the crops, there would be scarcely a limit to the product, excepting the space in which they were contained - knew nothing about the invaluable nitrogen which we now know to be wholly indispensable to plant growth. But light has grad ually dawned upon us, and by slow and sometimes faltering progress, there has been built up a system of agricultural science which explains the laws of plant growth and affords the most important information to the cultivator of the soil. Science is based upon fact. Philosophy is based upon speculation. Science is the outgrowth of philosophy, be cause before we can reach a true knowledge of any fact we must approach the study of it by a well devised theory, changed as may be necessary, and tested patiently and slowly until the knowledge sought is found. This know ledge, when verified by practice, sufficiently proved and classified, becomes science. Science then is nothing for the farmer to fear, or cast doubt and suspicion upon. Theory as has been said, has no part or lot in it; it is a summary of known facts, and is therefore of the most valuable use to the farmer as it gives him a sound basis upon which to build up such conclusions in regard to his practice as will enable him to meet the various difficulties which are al ways arising in his work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Agriculture for Secondary Schools: Studies in Soils and Crop Production Too many of these books, unfortunately, are confessedly ele mentary, Whereas it is not elementary agriculture that the farmer most needs. What he wants is instruction in the elementals of agriculture. It is the fundamentals of the subject that need to be emphasized and taught, and fortunately many of these books belie their titles and are not, after all, elementary, but elemental.
