Book A Management Plan and Policies for Arctic Grayling Fisheries Within the Arctic Yukon Kuskokwim Region

Download or read book A Management Plan and Policies for Arctic Grayling Fisheries Within the Arctic Yukon Kuskokwim Region written by Charles O. Swanton and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wild arctic grayling Thymallus arcticus distribution, life history, and past stock assessment in the Arctic-Yukon-Kuskokwim Region and the Upper Copper/Upper Susitna Management Area are presented. As a basis for this management plan, sport fisheries that target arctic grayling in this geographic area are characterized along with the known growth and population characteristics of the species. Management options are presented that would maintain harvest at sustainable levels, including harvest restrictions and special management areas.

Book A Program for Improving Fisheries Management and Research in the Arctic Yukon Kuskokwim AYK Region

Download or read book A Program for Improving Fisheries Management and Research in the Arctic Yukon Kuskokwim AYK Region written by Jan Marie Conitz and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Arctic-Yukon-Kuskokwim (AYK) region covers a vast area encompassing the entire drainage areas of the Yukon and Kuskokwim Rivers and northern rivers and coastal waters of the Bering, Chukchi, and Beaufort Seas. The region is characterized by small villages within the traditional territories of Inupiaq, Yup'ik, and Athabascan people, whose residents depend today, as they have for countless generations, on subsistence fishing for a major portion of their livelihood. Throughout more recent history, commercial fisheries for salmon, crab, whitefish, and other species also sustain local economies and are economically intertwined with subsistence fisheries for many families. Fisheries management in this region is extremely challenging due to the mixed stock origin of most fisheries, the remoteness, complexity, and vast size of the major river drainages, U.S./Canada Treaty agreements for the Yukon River, and the interdependence of subsistence and commercial fisheries. The suite of proposed projects in this report would provide necessary research and support management activities within the region. For the Arctic area, five salmon projects, one crab-related project, and two general management support projects are proposed. For the Yukon area, four research projects are proposed to improve understanding of chum and coho salmon, whitefish, and lamprey populations important for commercial and subsistence fisheries. For the Kuskokwim area, 13 projects for salmon and whitefish assessments and two general support projects are proposed, many of which would extend ongoing research and management activities in need of more stable sources of funding.

Book Chena River Arctic Grayling Stock Assessment

Download or read book Chena River Arctic Grayling Stock Assessment written by Andrew D. Gryska and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project plan details a study to estimate the abundance and size composition of spawning Arctic grayling Thymallus arcticus within a 149-km index area of the Chena River, describe Arctic grayling migrations between Badger Slough and the Chena River, and describe the seasonal distribution and migratory behavior of the spawning stock of Arctic grayling residing in the lower 149 km of the Chena River during spring. A combination of mark-recapture, Passive Integrated Transponder (PIT) tagging, and radiotelemetry techniques will be used to enumerate and track fish. Resulting data will provide managers with a contemporary assessment to evaluate the effects of proposed regulatory changes on the Chena River Arctic grayling population during the January 2023 Arctic-Yukon-Kuskokwim Board of Fisheries meeting.

Book Stock Assessment of Mendeltna Creek Arctic Grayling 2023

Download or read book Stock Assessment of Mendeltna Creek Arctic Grayling 2023 written by Joseph R. Spencer and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This project will describe the size composition and movements of Arctic grayling Thymallus arcticus susceptible to catch in a 16-km index area of Mendeltna Creek, from Old Man Lake down to the Glenn Highway Bridge, during spring and summer 2023. Resulting data will be used to determine if Sport Fish regulations for this fishery can be liberalized. Mendeltna Creek in the Tazlina River drainage is one of the few clearwater streams with easy shore access in the Upper Copper/Upper Susitna Management Area. In the mid-1990s, the creek supported relatively large harvests of Arctic grayling (nearly 1,000 fish annually), but studies conducted in the late 1990s indicated that the population was unlikely to sustain this level of harvest, and conservative regulations were introduced to protect the easily accessible population. Harvests of Arctic grayling from Mendeltna Creek have since declined substantially (to
