Book excerpt: In this “extremely moving . . . splendid, vigorous, warm-hearted novel” set in Ireland during WWI and the Easter Rising, two women are rivals in life and love (Irish Press). Dolly Devoy, a bold young Dubliner, has become very sure of herself since being promoted to work in the office of the local biscuit factory. Too sure of herself. She should be a lord’s daughter, like Alice Delahunt, to be that confident. For Alice the path looks smooth, with a glittering marriage to a hero of the Somme. But her husband, Stephen, is no hero to Alice, and she covets another. Her unlikely rival for the love of that man? One Dolly Devoy . . . It is an age of great passion and, in Dublin, of seething unrest. Love and war leave no one untouched, and in this story of loss and longing, those who survive are changed forever.

Book Measure of a Man

Download or read book Measure of a Man written by Martin Greenfield and published by Regnery Publishing. This book was released on 2014-11-10 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: He's been called "America's greatest living tailor" and "the most interesting man in the world." Now, for the first time, Holocaust-survivor Martin Greenfield tells his whole, incredible life story. Taken from his Czechoslovakian home at age fifteen and transported to the Nazi concentration camp at Auschwitz with his family, Greenfield came face-to-face with "Angel of Death" Dr. Joseph Mengele and was divided forever from his parents, sisters, and baby brother. In haunting, powerful prose, Greenfield remembers his desperation and fear as a teenager alone in the death camp--and how an impulsive decision to steal an SS soldier's shirt dramatically altered the course of his life. He learned how to sew; and when he began wearing the shirt under his prisoner uniform, he learned that clothes possess great power and could even help save his life. Measure of a Man is the story of a man who suffered unimaginable horror and emerged with a dream of success. From sweeping floors at a New York clothing factory to founding America’s premier handmade suit company, Greenfield built a fashion empire. Now 86-years-old and working with his sons, Greenfield has dressed the famous and powerful of D.C. and Hollywood, including Presidents Dwight Eisenhower, Bill Clinton, and Barack Obama and celebrities Paul Newman, Martin Scorsese, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Jimmy Fallon. Written with soul-baring honesty and, at times, a wry sense of humor, Measure of a Man is a memoir unlike any other--one that will inspire hope and renew faith in the resilience of man.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cora Larsen is a Victorian tailoress on Regent Street, where she creates dresses that are “the toast of the Season.” She is a gifted maker of men’s suits too, not that many are willing to have a woman take their measurements. Lord Galavyin believes in marrying for love, not convenience. He feels bad enough about the privilege of being a baron and refuses to consider an arranged marriage. One day, he walks through Cora’s door to collect a dress and is smitten with her forward-thinking social ideals. But, despite their growing friendship, he cannot persuade Cora to ignore the difference in their status and address him by his first name—Grant. When Cora loses the lease on her shop, she thinks it is simply a coincidence that the building belongs to Grant’s family. She doesn’t yet know she is in love with a man whose mother is the worst enemy one can imagine. Grant will do anything to keep Cora safe and employed, even if it takes helping her without her knowledge. What follows is a game of cat and mouse that will test Cora’s resolve and Grant’s love to their limits.

Book The Measure of a Man

Download or read book The Measure of a Man written by JJ Lee and published by McClelland & Stewart. This book was released on 2011-09-27 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FINALIST - Charles Taylor Prize for Literary Non-Fiction (2012) FINALIST - Governor General's Literary Award - Non-Fiction (2012) FINALIST - BC Book Prize's Hubert Evans Non-Fiction Prize (2012) A son’s decision to alter his father’s last surviving suit for himself is the launching point for this powerful book – part personal memoir, part social history of the man’s suit – about fathers and sons, love and forgiveness, and learning what it means to be a man. For years, journalist and amateur tailor JJ Lee tried to ignore the suit hanging at the back of his closet. It was his father’s suit. But when JJ decides to make the suit his own, little does he know he is about to embark on a journey to understand his own past. As JJ cuts into the jacket, he begins to piece together the story of his relationship with his father, a charismatic but troubled Montreal restauranteur whose demons brought tumult upon his family. JJ also recounts his own ups and downs during the year he spent as an apprentice at Modernize Tailors – the last of the great Chinatown suitmakers in Vancouver – where, under the tutelage of his octogenarian master tailor, he learns invaluable lessons about life. Woven throughout JJ’s tale are stories of the suit’s own evolution, illuminating how this humble garment has, for centuries, been the surprising battleground for the war between generations. Written with great wit, bracing honesty, and narrative verve, and featuring line drawings throughout by the author, The Measure of a Man is an unforgettable story of love, forgiveness, and discovering what it means to be your own man.

Book Men Can Wear Dresses Too

Download or read book Men Can Wear Dresses Too written by Catie Maye and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2014-02-21 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Catie stood in front of the full length mirror. It was Friday night. The one night a month that she could dress up and go out dancing but, nothing was going right. Catie sighed and began to fiddle with the new Karen Millen, black and white geometric patterned dress. Catie reached down and smoothed her stockings, and checked the mirror one final time. The reflection indifferently shrugged in reluctant acceptance. Was that a smudge of mascara? Catie reached for a tissue and wiped the corner of her eye. She cursed. How do other women manage to achieve long curly perfect eye lashes when she could only ever manage to surround her eyes in a black gooey mess. She took out the dark cherry red lipstick and freshened her lips, pouting, to dab away any excess lipstick with the tissue. Her silvery blonde hair hung limply around her face. She thought maybe it was time for a new hairstyle? Catie shuffled her feet. Would she be able to dance or even walk with the four inch black high heels she had chosen for the evening. Catie stood in front of the full length mirror and smiled. The transformation from a man to a woman was complete, at least for one night.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brennan McKay is a 35-year-old, single, youth pastor unsure of his calling in the ministry. However, just a few miles away from his home church, in the quaint town of Homecoming, resides a small body of believers in need of a shepherd. Hope Church is on the verge of closing its doors due to the immoral actions of the former pastor, and only six members remain who are willing to do whatever it takes to bring their ministry back to life. Although not thoroughly convinced he has been called to pastor a church of his own, Brennan takes on this daunting task of trying to rebuild Hope Church to its former glory. As Pastor, Brennan soon realizes he is not alone in his efforts to bring Hope back to life, and things seem to be going well for the young pastor and his tiny congregation until he meets Tom, the town drunk. After making the most unorthodox of introductions, Tom quickly becomes a person in need that Brennan cannot stop thinking about. There is no shortage of obstacles and setbacks as Brennan and his congregation try to reach their community for Christ. Distinct personalities and situations provide Brennan with a host of reasons why God is not through with Hope Church, and Tom is just one remarkable character that brings Brennan another step closer to realizing his purpose in life. God is on the forefront in this story of a pastor willing to cast aside all apprehension so the lost can be reached and a church can thrive once again.
