Book Magnus Characteristics of Arbitrary Rotating Bodies

Download or read book Magnus Characteristics of Arbitrary Rotating Bodies written by I. D. Jacobson and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report reviews both theoretical and experimental investigations of the Magnus effect on arbitrary bodies of revolution. The main emphasis is on spinning projectiles at angle of attack, both with and without fins. Flow visualization measurements are used to assess the accuracy of the existing theories. Laminar, turbulent, and mixed boundary layers are considered. (Author).

Book Calculation of Magnus Forces on Axisymmetric Bodies at Small Angles of Attack with Incompressible Turbulent Boundary Layers

Download or read book Calculation of Magnus Forces on Axisymmetric Bodies at Small Angles of Attack with Incompressible Turbulent Boundary Layers written by Neal Tetervin and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Magnus force is found by adding the boundary layer displacement surface to the body and then calculating the force on the resulting non- axisymmetric body. The displacement surface is calculated by the simultaneous integration of a differential equation for a streamline, two partial-differential boundary layer integral-momentum equations with the boundary layer thickness and the tangent of the angle between the local direction of the surface friction and potential flow streamline as dependent variables, and a partial differential equation for the displacement surface thickness. The method is applied to a half-ellipsoid of fineness ratio 5 at 4 degrees angle of attack. Slender-body theory is used to calculate the force.

Book Boundary layer Studies on Spinning Bodies of Revolution

Download or read book Boundary layer Studies on Spinning Bodies of Revolution written by Walter B. Sturek and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation of the effects of spin induced distortion of the boundary-layer on a spinning cone and tangent-ogive-cylinder model for small angle of attack at Mach 2, 3 and 4 is reported. The profile of the location of boundary-layer transition has been determined completely about the surface of the models from spark shadowgraphs. These spark shadowgraphs were taken with the model mounted on an offset strut which was rolled incrementally in azimuth to reveal the entire surface of the model. Strain gage balance measurements of Magnus and normal force were made for three significantly different boundary-layer configurations--predominately laminar, predominately turbulent, tripped to turbulent--and confirm the pronounced sensitivity of Magnus to boundary-layer configuration. Book The Static and Agnus Aerodynamic Characteristics of the M823 Research Store Equipped with Fixed and Freely Spinning Stabilizers

Download or read book The Static and Agnus Aerodynamic Characteristics of the M823 Research Store Equipped with Fixed and Freely Spinning Stabilizers written by Frank J. Regan and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The report is the first in a two-part series of technical reports on the dynamics and aerodynamics of free-fall stores using freely spinning stabilizers. Presented are the results of recent wind-tunnel measurements of the normal force, pitching moment and Magnus force and moment on the M823 Research Store in transonic flow. Comparisons are made between configurations equipped with fixed and freely spinning stabilizers, with regard to sign and relative magnitude of the Magnus force and moment. A method is presented and applied whereby the Magnus force and moment are corrected for flow angularity.

Book Computations of Turbulent Boundary Layer Development Over a Yawed Spinning Body of Revolution with Application to the Magnus Effect

Download or read book Computations of Turbulent Boundary Layer Development Over a Yawed Spinning Body of Revolution with Application to the Magnus Effect written by Walter B. Sturek and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many projectiles are slender bodies of revolution which are launched at high spin rates. Magnus forces and moments are generated by the distorted boundary layer which results from a spinning body at angle yaw. The Ballistic Research laboratory is conducting and supporting theoretical and experimental Magnus research efforts. The theoretical effort involves: (1) numerical calculation of the fully three-dimensional boundary layer with the added complication of interaction between surface spin and cross flow velocity; (2) three-dimensional inviscid flow calculations over a body plus boundary layer displacement surface with no plane of symmetry. Several types of experimental data, such as surface pressures, Magnus forces, boundary layer surveys, flow visualization, and skin friction, were obtained to evaluate and provide guidance to the theoretical effort. Comparison of the theory to experimental data shows the agreement to be very good. (Author).

Book Design for Control of Projectile Flight Characteristics

Download or read book Design for Control of Projectile Flight Characteristics written by United States. Army Materiel Command and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This handbook presents a general survey of the principal factors affecting the flight of projectiles, and describes the methods commonly used for predicting and influencing the flight performance. The coefficients which characterize the aerodynamic forces and moments of a moving body are identified, methods for determining the coefficients applicable to a projectile having a given shape and center of gravity location are described, and the coefficients of a number of projectiles and projectile shapes are given. The use of aerodynamic coefficients in predicting stability, range and accuracy is described. The effects of variations in projectile shape and center of gravity location on range, accuracy and lethality are discussed. Some material on prototype testing and the effects of round-to-round variations in production lots is presented.
