Book excerpt: The ultra-wideband (UWB) impulse-radio technology has unique features including high data-rate as well as low power consumption with ranging and localization capabilities. An UWB front-end, however, has to accommodate design challenges resulting from the exceptional wide bandwidth of several GHz. This book discusses the implementation issues of the UWB impulse-radio transceiver front-end, including the performance analysis of practical systems and the design of radio-frequency integrated circuits for transceiver front-ends. A general framework for performance evaluation of practical impulse radio system is proposed and demonstrated in scenarios of high-speed data communications as well as low-data-rate wireless body-area networks. An inductorless low- noise amplifier is designed with syncretic adoption of thermal noise canceling, capacitor peaking, and current reuse. The CMOS ransmit/receive switch design with highest reported bandwidth and power handling capability are discussed with customized transistor layout and triple-well resistive body- floating techniques. The prototypes have been demonstrated in state-of-the-art 130nm CMOS technology.

In addition to high throughput WLAN systems such as 802.11a/b/g/n, attention is also being focused on lower rate, short distance systems such as Bluetooth and Zigbee. These low rate radios are being proposed for a variety of applications including automation/security, smart toys, remote sensing/control, asset tracking, and as a replacement for computer peripheral wires. While not demanding aggressive throughput, these radios do require low cost, power efficient operation and optionally the ability to perform ranging. Unfortunately, currently reported radios are up to an order of magnitude away from these power and cost targets or do not support ranging. However, a recent ruling from the FCC has opened up nearly 8GHz of unlicensed spectrum (from dc to 960MHz and from 3.1GHz to 10.6GHz) for ultra-wideband (UWB) deployment. One attractive method of UWB signaling that seems suited to a low power, highly integrated implementation communicates with short pulses, on the order of a nanosecond, that spread energy over at least 500MHz of bandwidth. Termed "impulse-UWB," the baseband nature of this signaling promises low cost and low power consumption through design simplicity, pulsed (or "duty-cycled") operation, and a "mostly-digital" implementation. The benefits of this approach are balanced by the risk of jamming from in-band interference, of stricter sampling and gain constraints, and of increased digital complexity. This dissertation presents the system exploration, specification, design, and demonstration of a low power, highly integrated, flexible, baseband, impulse ultra-wideband transceiver front-end.

Decades of research in the area of wideband systems has lead us to new possibilities in the design of low-power, low complexity radios. Ultra-wideband is a direct offspring, which takes the initiative a step further by presenting novel wideband techniques for RF technology. The US FCC position on UWB for commercial usage changed after agreeing to adopt the First Report and Order on February 14, 2002. Unlicensing several gigahertz of frequency spectrum allowed companies to manufacture and market products incorporating UWB technology. At a certain moment, the potential benefits of UWB were outweighed, when existing wireless (narrowband) regulators perceived UWB as a disruptive influence. This, however, did not stop most countries from accommodating and recognizing the true nature of UWB. In brief, the authors have only scratched the surface when it comes to understanding the true potential of UWB technology. The development stage is in its infancy and will necessitate a substantial amount of research to meet industrial specifications. Short-range communications, low-power and low/moderate data rate throughput are the most attractive aspects and promises of UWB technology. For this very reason, applications, such as wireless sensor networks (WSN) are most noticeable.

Detail analysis for the IR-UWB system architecture is provided. Critical circuit building blocks, such as pulse generator (PG), BPSK modulation, receiver front-end low-noise amplifier (LNA) and correlator, are described both theoretically and experimentally.

Book excerpt: Wireless Body Area Networks (WBANs) are expected to promote new applications for the ambulatory health monitoring of chronic patients and elderly population, aiming to improve their quality of life and independence. These networks are composed by wireless sensor nodes (WSNs) used for measuring physiological variables (e.g., glucose level in blood or body temperature) or controlling therapeutic devices (e.g., implanted insulin pumps). These nodes should exhibit a high degree of energy autonomy in order to extend their battery lifetime or even make the node supply to rely on harvesting techniques. Typically, the power budget of WSNs is dominated by the wireless link and, hence, many efforts have been directed during the last years toward the implementation of power efficient transceivers. Because of the short range (typically no more than a few meters) and low data rate (typically in between 10 kb/s and 1 Mb/s), simple communication protocols can be employed. One of these protocols, specifically tailored for WBAN applications, is the Bluetooth low energy (BLE) standard. This book describes the challenges and solutions for the design of ultra-low power transceivers for WBANs applications and presents the implementation details of a BLE transceiver prototype. Coverage includes not only the main concepts and architectures for achieving low power consumption, but also the details of the circuit design and its implementation in a standard CMOS technology.

Book excerpt: Today’s booming expanse of personal wireless radio communications is a rich source of new challenges for the designer of the underlying enabling te- nologies. Personal communication networks are designed from a fundam- tally different perspective than broadcast service networks, such as radio and television. While the focus of the latter is on reliability and user comfort, the emphasis of personal communication devices is on throughput and mobility. However, because the wireless channel is a shared transmission medium with only very limited resources, a trade-off has to be made between mobility and the number of simultaneous users in a con?ned geographical area. Accord- 1 ing to Shannon’s theorem on channel capacity, the overall data throughput of a communication channel bene?ts from either a linear increase of the tra- mission bandwidth, or an (equivalent) exponential increase in signal quality. Consequently, it is more bene?cial to think in terms of channel bandwidth than it is to pursue a high transmission power. All the above elements are embodied in the concept of spatial ef?ciency. By describing the throughput of a system 2 in terms of bits/s/Hz/m , spatial ef?ciency takes into account that the use of a low transmission power reduces the operational range of a radio transmission, and as such enables a higher reuse rate of the same frequency spectrum.
