Book excerpt: On October 26, 2019 I was dead! I suffered a massive cardiac arrest. My heart stopped beating, my breathing ceased, and the medics couldn't revive me. I was clinically dead for more than thirty minutes. And then, miraculously, the paramedics detected a heartbeat. As I lay in my bed in the ICU, I wrestled with a big question that went around and around in my mind: "Why am I still alive?" The answer, I believe, was divinely inspired. God wanted me to share with you the treasures He had given me in the darkness, during a period of unbelievable catastrophic suffering. God brought me back from the dead to tell you about the mystery of His ways through suffering and His purpose for my life. This was my inspiration for Living Hope, and I pray it will inspire you in your life. From what I have experienced over the last sixty years-the highs and the lows- I am going to tell you how God prepared me for my purpose and, as shrouded in mystery as it is, I pray my story will help you in your own life, to discover your purpose. From the depths of my soul, after all I have journeyed through, I pray that you will be inspired and encouraged. May the treasures and insights in Living Hope help awaken faith, peace, and purpose in all you are journeying through. Gerard is a professor of life and death, having experienced a blessed life, followed by the darkest valley of suffering after the suicide of his beloved youngest son, the near break up of his marriage and the unbelievable death of his beautiful daughter. As if this wasn't enough pain, in the same eight-year period, his beloved sister and brother also died, as did a nephew! Rising from the ashes, he faced financial ruin after the betrayal of a 'friend' and exceptional medical bills following his cardiac arrest and his beautiful wife's bladder cancer! Gerard has walked with God through his unbelievable journey and, in Living Hope, he shares the treasures he discovered in the darkness. Gerard lives with his beloved wife Jeannie in Malibu, California.

Book From Dry Bones to Living Hope

Download or read book From Dry Bones to Living Hope written by Missy Buchanan and published by Upper Room Books. This book was released on 2021-10-01 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though the shadow side of aging is a reality, author Missy Buchanan brings spiritual light and nourishment to people in the later years of life. Older adults struggle with chronic pain and diminished physical abilities. They contend with losses that pile up like the dry bones in the prophet Ezekiel's vision—the loss of loved ones and friends, the loss of their home and belongings, the loss of independence, and the loss of purpose. In a culture that values youth more than age, older adults often feel forgotten and without purpose. Each chapter of From Dry Bones to Living Hope opens with an intimate, prayerful lament to God from the perspective of the older adult who longs for spiritual renewal and purpose. The authentic voice of lament establishes credibility with older readers who yearn for others to empathize with their struggles. The second part of each chapter, "Cultivating Hope," guides them to God's perspective on aging and specific actions they can take that lead to hope and joy.

Book excerpt: Life-expectancy worldwide is twice what it was a hundred years ago. And because of modern medicine, many of us don't often see death up close. That makes it easy to live as if death is someone else's problem. It isn't. Ignoring the certainty of death doesn't protect us from feeling its effects throughout the lives we're living now. But this avoidance can hold us back from experiencing the powerful, everyday relevance of Jesus's promises to us. So long as death remains remote and unreal, Jesus's promises will too. But honesty about death brings hope to life. That's the ironic claim at the heart of this book. Cultivating "death-awareness" helps us bring the promises of Jesus from the hazy clouds of some other world into the everyday problems of our world—where they belong.

Download or read book Hope in Times of Fear written by Timothy Keller and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2021-03-09 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Resurrection accounts of Jesus in the Gospels are the most dramatic and impactful stories ever told. One similarity unites each testimony--that none of his most loyal and steadfast followers could "see" it was him, back from the dead. The reason for this is at the very foundation of the Christian faith. She turned around and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not realize that it was Jesus. (John 20:14) Hope in the Time of Fear is a book that unlocks the meaning of Jesus's resurrection for readers. Easter is considered the most solemn and important holiday for Christians. It is a time of spiritual rebirth and a time of celebrating the physical rebirth of Jesus after three days in the tomb. For his devoted followers, nothing could prepare them for the moment they met the resurrected Jesus. Each failed to recognize him. All of them physically saw him and yet did not spiritually truly see him. It was only when Jesus reached out and invited them to see who he truly was that their eyes were open. Here the central message of the Christian faith is revealed in a way only Timothy Keller could do it--filled with unshakable belief, piercing insight, and a profound new way to look at a story you think you know. After reading this book, the true meaning of Easter will no longer be unseen.

In Hope When Life Unravels, Dr. Adam Dooley, pastor and host of the daily radio broadcast A Better Way, searches for answers to our biggest questions about suffering as he shares his son Carson's story of battling leukemia. Adam speaks openly about the gut-wrenching struggle his family endured for three years of life-threatening illness and how God met them in their hours of need--even when it wasn't in the ways they wanted. And, along with his own story, Adam takes readers through the story of Job, unpacking insights about God's character, his love, and how we can stay connected to him even during seasons of pain. Book Get Up and Live

Download or read book Get Up and Live written by Chuck Keels and published by Intelligent Design Press. This book was released on 2021-09-16 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you had told Chuck and Hannah a few years ago that they would find true love after getting diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer, and that their journey together would impact so many peoples' lives all over the world, they would have both laughed. Get Up and Live is the play-by-play narrative of how two Stage 4 cancer thrivers connected in divine circumstances, battled through a roller-coaster ride of cancer treatments, surgeries, and pain, and learned to face each wave head-on, together. The past five years of Hannah's life have challenged her both mentally and physically. Despite experiencing major loss and several spinal fractures requiring major surgery, her dynamic spirit and big smile light up the room. For most of his life, Chuck felt spiritually lost, having experienced a church upbringing that missed the most important aspect of Christianity: a personal relationship with Jesus. He struggled for years until he experienced a Stage 4 end-of-life cancer diagnosis. Jesus showed up and touched him, and redirected Chuck's passion and purpose in life, blessing him with Hannah as his partner and wife. As co-founders of Living Hope Cancer Foundation (www.GetUpandLive.org), Chuck and Hannah work to fill a niche that is missing in the cancer field: the healing power of a positive mindset. Their individual books, Hi...I'm Chuck and Faith Like Skin, were written before they met and have inspired so many people, with and without cancer. Get Up and Live is the sequel of sorts, telling of their miraculous meeting, and how Chuck and Hannah's faith has given them strength in their unbelievable journey. Whether through a short or long miracle, their purpose in this beautiful life is to get closer to Jesus and show everyone how to get up and live despite life's challenges.

Book Living in the Hope of Glory

Download or read book Living in the Hope of Glory written by Adolphe Monod and published by P & R Publishing. This book was released on 2002 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Living in the Hope of Glory (originally Les Adieux, or Farewells) has been blessing readers for almost 150 years. Originally these were a series of talks given by Adolphe Monod, a renowned pastor in the Reformed Church of France, to groups of his family and friends. They met in his bedroom each Sunday to partake of the Lord's Supper during the last six months of his life as he suffered from terminal cancer. But this is not a book about dying. It is a book about living whole-heartedly for Christ and living so as to have no regrets at life's end. A week before his death he said, I have a Savior He has freely saved me through his shed blood. ...All my righteous acts, all my works which have been praised, all my preaching...is in my eyes only filthy rags. A brief biography of Monod has been added to this edition to acquaint modern readers with this extraordinary man.

Book Living in the Hope of My Imagination

Download or read book Living in the Hope of My Imagination written by William D. Simpson and published by Thorncrown Publishing. This book was released on 2010-02 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: EXPOSING THE UNTRUTHS OF MORAL RELATIVISM IN THE LIGHT OF ABSOLUTE TRUTH Give to a person what they want and in time it will become an expectation. Left unchallenged that anticipation turns into habit and once trained, independence gives way to dependence. When people are reliant they become comfortable and at that moment, they are led astray. This defines American culture today. WAKE UP PEOPLE! You are happily being led to the slaughter and you don't even know it. Self-indulgent political agendas and a systematic dismantling of moral ethics have created a way of life that has ruptured the foundation of who we are. Money, power and self-gratification are now the heartbeat of a nation that once held human life in high esteem. We have become a people despised by our very own. For the people involved in everything from politics to education, science to medicine, entertainment, media and the arts, to false world religions and those who just don't know, your time of accountability has come. It is time for change, but not the change they want us to believe in.
