Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Little Girl in Old Quebec On the Space between the cliffs and the water a few wooden buildings, rough hewn, marked the Site of the lower town. A wall had been erected, finished with a gallery, loopholed for musketry, and within this were the beginnings of a town that was to be famous for heroic deeds, for men of high courage, for quaintness that perpetuates old stories which are perfect romances yet to-day after the lapse of three centuries. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Janet: Her Winter in Quebec "After all, you know," Ronald Leslie observed thoughtfully; "it's the very same lesson I was trying to beat into another chap, all last summer." Day unclasped her hands and, resting her elbow on her knees, buried her chin in her cupped palms. "Sauce for the goose, I suppose," she said trenchantly; "and sauce for the gander." But there was no levity in her tone. Unthinkingly, Ronald copied her pose. He was an abnormally tall young Canadian. She was a thin slip of an American girl, just fifteen years old and devoid of much beauty, save for a pair of brown eyes that danced and dreamed by turns. "It's not just the same thing, though," Ronald pursued, as he sat with his eyes fixed on the bit of blue river which rested against the background of bluer hills. "That fellow - he was an American, too - was knocked out by his health. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Ralph Destournier went gayly along, whistling a merry French song that was nearly all chorus, climbing, slipping, springing, wondering in his heart as many a man did then what had induced Samuel de Champlain to dream out a city on this craggy, rocky spot. Yet its wildness had an impressive grandeur. Above the island of Orleans the channel narrowed, and there were the lovely green heights of what was to be Point Levis, more attractive, he thought, than these frowning cliffs. The angle between the St. Charles and St. Lawrence gave an impregnable site for a fortress, and Champlain was a born soldier with a quick eye to seize on the possibility of defence.

Montgomery's Anne of Green Gables has inspired renewed interest in one of Canada's most beloved fictional icons. The international appeal of the red-haired orphan has not diminished over the past century, and the cultural meanings of her story continue to grow and change. The original essays in Anne's World offer fresh and timely approaches to issues of culture, identity, health, and globalization as they apply to Montgomery's famous character and to today's readers. In conversation with each other and with the work of previous experts, the contributors to Anne's World discuss topics as diverse as Anne in fashion, the global industry surrounding Anne, how the novel can be used as a tool to counteract depression, and the possibility that Anne suffers from Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. Anne in translation and its adaptation for film and television are also considered. By establishing new ways to examine one of popular culture's most beloved characters, the essays of Anne's World demonstrate the timeless and ongoing appeal of L.M. Montgomery's writing.
