Book excerpt: Excerpt from Diary of a Little Girl in Old New York I think there are many New Yorkers who like myself, have spent most, Of a long life in this delightful old town, that love to go back in memory to the quaint little city Of their childhood which has so completely disappeared in the great metropolitan com munity of to-day. Perhaps this little book which is a faith ful record of events as seen by childhood eyes and recorded in childhood fashion may give an hour or two of pleasure to old friends of the city far and near, and al though they may not any more see the tree embowered streets Of long ago and the lit tle two-story brick houses with their dor mer windows and slanting roofs that used to line both sides of the street, the author hopes that these pages may bring back some of the scenes they were familiar with and help to renew, in Spirit at least, some of the Old friendships and affections they enjoyed when the heart was young. "Do you suppose any one could live to sec nineteen hundred?' asked the little girl, with wondering eyes. Father Underhill laughed. "Count up and see how old you would be, Hanny," he replied. "Why, I should be - sixty-five." "Not as old as either grandmother," said John. "If the world docs n't come to an end," suggested Hanny, cautiously. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Little Girl in Old San Francisco It was a long journey for a little girl, so long indeed that the old life had almost faded from her mind, and seemed like something done in another existence. When she was younger still she had once surprised her mother by saying, "Mother, where did I live before I came here?" The pale, care-worn woman had glanced at her in vague surprise and answered rather fretfully, "Why, nowhere, child." "Oh, but I remember things," said the little girl with a confident air, looking out of eyes that seemed to take an added shade from her present emotions. "Nonsense! You can't remember things that never happened. That's imagining them, and it isn't true. If you told them they would be falsehoods. There, go out and get me a basket of chips." She was afraid of telling falsehoods, most of those rigid people called them by their plain name, "lies," and whipped their children. So the little girl kept them to herself; she was a very good and upright child as a general thing and knew very little about her tricky father. But she went on imagining. Especially when she studied geography, which she was extravagantly fond of, yet she could never quite decide which country she had lived in. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Little Girl Next Door Sarah made no remark, but stitched away in silence. Gladys drummed with her fingers on the window glass and looked out at the steadily pouring rain. After a minute or two she began again. I don't see why I've got to stay in the house anyway, even if it does rain. Everybody else is out. I just saw two little girls not any bigger than me on the opposite side of the street, and they looked as if they were having an awfully nice time. If papa were at home I know he'd let me go out. Well, your papa isn't at home, and while he's away it's my business to take care of you, and see that you don't get sick. You'll not go out in this pour, I can tell you - not if it lasts a week so there's no use in your talking any more about it. I should think you'd be ashamed to be so discontented. I don't believe there's another little girl in New York who has as many beautiful things to amuse herself with as you have, and yet you're never satisfied. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Little Girl in Old Philadelphia She was swinging her gingham sunbonnet, faded beyond any recognition of its pristine coloring, her small hand keeping tight hold of the strings. At every revolution it went swifter and swifter until it seemed a grayish sort of wheel whirling in the late sunshine that sent long shadows among the trees. When she let it go it flew like a great bird, while she laughed sweet, merry childish notes that would have stirred almost any soul. A slim, lithe little maid with a great crop of yellow hair, cut short in the neck, and as we should say now, banged across the forehead. But it was a mass of frowzy curls that seemed full of sunshine. With two or three quick leaps she captured it again and was just preparing for her next swirl. "Primrose! Primrose! I think thee grows more disorderly every day. What caper is this? Look at these strings, they are like a twisted rope. And if thy bonnet had gone into the pond! For that matter it needs the washtub." Book The Faerie Queene as Children s Literature

Download or read book The Faerie Queene as Children s Literature written by Velma Bourgeois Richmond and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2016-07-11 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edmund Spenser's vast epic poem The Faerie Queene is the most challenging masterpiece in early modern literature and is praised as the work most representative of the Elizabethan age. In it he fused traditions of medieval romance and classical epic, his religious and political allegory creating a Protestant alternative to the Catholic romances rejected by humanists and Puritans. The poem was later made over as children's literature, retold in lavish volumes and schoolbooks and appreciated in pedagogical studies and literary histories. Distinguished writers for children simplified the stories and noted artists illustrated them. Children were less encouraged to consider the allegory than to be inspired to the moral virtues. This book studies The Faerie Queene's many adaptations for a young audience in order to provide a richer understanding of both the original and adapted texts.
